Hit and run

I was the victim of a hit and run tonight. I know who it was and found part of the persons car stuck in my bumper, so my questions are:

If I call the police and have the evidence and can match it to the truck, will the police proceed further or no?

My inspection is also one month out of date, will this affect anything to do with how it goes forward from there?

How do you know who hit you? I'd report it...the sooner the better. Even if the investigation goes nowhere you don't have to report it to your insurance company. It should only effect inspection if it damaged a required part (headlight, blinker, etc.)
