Unless you're willing to put in some time to learn about photography, you're better off with a good point and shoot (ie Canon G10). Photography can get expensive once you add in the costs of lenses and other various accessories.

Yep. It's more than capable of great images without requiring much prior knowledge on photography settings. If you learn a thing or two, it can take better images than an idiot with an SLR.

^^Speaks the truth, and I didn't believe him 100% when I got into it. I bought my cam and kit lens for 520 shipped used and was happy...that was in May, since then I've dropped probbably dropped another....1000 or so on equiptment and there will be more in the spring. P&S is your best bet, its quick, simple, and usually cheaper.

sounds like hes thinking about getting pretty serious with it and buying an upper tier point and shoot will just be a waste of money IMO. get a simple dslr(like the one i have for sale) and then go from there

StillenGLE, if you go to the moorestown NJ meets, I will be there not this Tuesday but the one coming after. I can let you play around with my 30D and you can get a feel of what its like working with an SLR. Also, Ciotti will have his XTi (or maybe at that point XSi) out and you can probbably talk to him for advice.

That doesn't sound too serious to me to drop some coin on an SLR

I agree with I like rice. buy a decent P&S and see how you do with that. All a camera is, is a lightproof box. What you do with it is what determines whether the photo taken is good or not. I have a lot more camera gear than jspek, yet I still think he's a better photographer. Cameras don't take pictures, people do.

+1 I have the cannon G7 which is very similar to the current G10..It has most of the manual adjustments you get with an slr if you want to try stuff out for yourself..I have learned quite a bit with mine and I think I am ready for a good slr next time around but I will still miss it..The only gripe I have is that the high iso setting do not work so well..It takes awesome pictures though..Manual adjustments are not quite as easy to mess with once you get going due to lack of buttons, ect. but for the most part it is all there. Plus you can buy different lenses ect.
Heres some pics I took using a G7 with no tripod that I thought came out pretty damn good..
