Also try b&h photography for used lenses for great prices. I got Katie a 55-300 lense and she loves it.

B&H and Adorama in NYC rent lenses as well, I believe they even will ship them to you.

My Advice, Don't go nuts on all kinds of different length cheap lenses, I only own 3 lenses and have been doing just fine. I had other lenses and sold them since they got little use.

I bought mine in this order.
70-200 2.8 L - Most versatile fast telephoto lens. (best purchase i ever made)
50 1.8 - Cheap Fast Prime (sub $100)
17-40 4L - Great wide angle but if you have a crop sensor get the 10-22 I had it before and it was great.

Grimm, thanks for the helpful info. I really need to save up for the L. That seems the way to go in the end. Especially considering that I want to use this at the track mostly.

That would be awesome. If we ever meet up at an event or something, it would be great to try out. I'm still almost brand new to the game.

As the others have mentioned the fish-eye effect is somewhat undesirable and comes from a really wide ass lens. IIRC the fisheye lenses are cheaper to make then a proper wide lens. Now that there is software that can correct the fisheye effect, those cheaper wide lenses are pretty cool.

It does seem plenty fast enough for mid-day shooting of action and the image stabilization is pretty cool. With IS you can even do concert photography with this lens and it comes out even though it's only F4.5... with a steady hand anyway.

I have the sigma 18-55mm F2.8. Cost me like $450. Not too pleased with the lens TBH. Focusing issues. But it does look badass. Everyone thinks I'm some kind of pro photogapher with that lens and my crappy Rebel XT. A T3i and kit lens would probably make better photos than I do.

Oh I just saw that sigma is a full frame lens. It's a waste of money for you unless you are VERY serious and plan on spending $1K or more on a full frame body down the road. Think about that one carefully. I've decided I have too many hobbies and that I will stay "amateur" with the photography stuff and stick with crop lenses which are cheaper.

Yea rob honestly I recommend( im only two yrs in so still a noob) do not buy any more lenses, learn the features of your camera and just practice. I have the t2i as does Katie, and I am still shocked at the pics I can get when I take my time and just use the kit lens. Plus it's an easy hobby to just dump money into, and expect that well an L lense equals pro pictures, not the case if you do not know how to expose a pic properly or what aperture u want.

Also take into account do you plan to make a career down the line or just for fun and a hobby? Also used lense are a good option because, when you are dealing with slrs, most people know how to take care of them properly and to store them safely.

that 50-250 f4.5.... thats not a constant 4.5 correct? it jumps to something like f6 at 250mm, right? Thats not even in the same ballpark as the 70-200 f2.8

It's not but it takes badass pics of race cars for a n00b. Even so that 70-200 has no business being on a crop body.

I used to shoot the 70-200 2.8L on the canon xti body. made me chuckle that my lens was double what I paid for the body.

You can usually save a ton of money going with sigma lenses instead of the L. Even with the issues I have with mine, I'd wholeheartedly recommend them. My 18-55 F2.8 sigma compares favorably to the >$1000 Canon L equivalent but only cost $450.

The very first thing you have to do is figure out how far you want to go down the rabbit hole. You can spend less than $1000 in total on everything and be happy or $10,000 and still want more. I decided early on that if I want to shoot pro stuff, I'll borrow the 5DMKii from work and lenses from SoStock92. My personal setup is cheap. In the end I want to have a T2i (less than $400), 50mm F1.8 prime, $70, Sigma 18-55mm F2.8, $450, 50-250F4 Canon $140. That's $1060 for a very versatile prosumer collection.

As someone else said, you need to learn to work very well with what you have before spending money. Make sure you bother to use it and actually enjoy the hobby. Do you remember some of the pics Asian Jul took with her 50mm lens. That's a $70 lens on a consumer camera and she makes magic happen with it!

This advice is perfect guys. I think Dante hit it spot on. I need to work small and just know my cameras potential before I go crazy with anything else.

Yeah rob don't fall into the category of feeling like you "need" more lenses or accessories. Just shoot, have fun and you will know when you are ready for a new lens, or a flash etc.

What I will recommend is a solid tripod, for night pics is a must and for certain pictures during the day is a great help as well!
