Weight Reduction..help?
- rear seats (easy, done it before) - tow brace (done) - spare/jack/trunk floor cover (done) - skid plate (done) Now..for your weight redux guys...where else are small places to take weight from? Different speakers? I know wheels..exhaust..stuff like that..but where are places that are normally forgotten? I'll post up pics friday..im just looking for ideas on where else I can start shaving. Oh yea..let me see if I have this right: 100lbs= ~10hp= .1 seconds off of 1/4mile Right?

sound deadening material, carpet, rear seat belts, AC compressor etc. Basically if your getting serious about weight reduction if you don't need it take it out.

What about speakers...how much do they weigh usually? Jack/tire/trunk pieces/floor mats= 58 lbs.

basically to have a good difference from it you have to remove a lot of things...more than just the floormats and spare. I think that after you remove so much of the car, it becomes kinda undrivable cause its so loud in there

I think i'm gonna take out the rear quarter panels and rear speaker panel. Just gotta make sure to keep the brake light (if not, then the panel will stay).
My goal is 3600 lbs. lol Oh oh I can also take off the rear heat shield!

cut out the door panels, remove all carpeting & upholstrey, replace glass with lexan - i'm sure that's good for 200lbs +
then go for reducing unsprung weight: lighter wheels, inboard brakes, plastic/CF/alloy replacement of parts.

Who does lexan stuff? I know the back pieces of glass would be wonderful...
racing seats would be decent too.

whasts the goal for the car. dd, raod race, 1/4 ?? im not sure o fthe weight distribution of the car, but i bet its pretty front heavy right?
llighter engine componants and body panels (hood and front fenders?), remove the stereo rear seats, sound deadening, carpeting, a/c, lexan, lightweight seats, mini battery.. you could go on and on. but realy i bet youd feel more of a performance gain with lighweight wheels and rotors. btw, whats this piggie weigh if your target is 3600lbs??? |

Hack up the bumper beams if you want to get serious. I didn't hack mine up but all i did was take the JDM bumper beam (basically bare bones) and replaced them. Replacing both was, I am gonna say about 80-90 pounds. I would not be surprised if it was more actually, but this sounds about right.
AC is a bit of weight too (the compressor weighs a ton for its size, the condenser isn't too heavy)

I plan on just making it as fast as possible..it's a weekend car, but I do drive it as much as possible.
The interior/rear pieces can apparently be taken out/put back in <10 mins. So that seems like a pretty decent mod.. I wonder about the bumpers..hm. The stockweight is ~3700 lbs.

Mods will make up for the reduction! Keep it in street trim. If anything take out the backseat and ish if it never gets used. 100lbs = .10 Sec. in the 1/4.

Yea..I mean..I have standards boltons minus the biggies- cams/heads/headers. So right there im covered..and my exhaust is shorter/slightly lighter than stock exhaust.
I just want to find every advantage as possible. my advantage on most cars is hp..hence the roll races. My disadvantage when compared to other cars is the weight..its KILLER. If i trim that down by 200 lbs...well then..3500 is a much better fighting weight with 300+ hp than 3700! BTW hp goal= 450 rwhp.

lexan is gonna look like sh** in a few months when it starts getting scratches on it. just stick with the carpet, take all the plastic pannels out of the rear then remove the sound deadening stuff behind that. if you really wanna get some weight gone go for the a/c and im not talking just the lines and compressor. take out the compressor, condensor, reciever/dryer, all the hard and soft lines, then go inside the car and go for the entire heater core i bet you will take off about 100lbs doing that alone. and while you are under/behind the dash there are metal support bars back there too. they are a few lbs.
if you really wanna go crazy take the dash out and make a custom 1/2 dash. just the driver side. pretty much just something to hold the speedo. note: doing what i have said you will no longer have heat, air conditioning, a defroster, or even vent capabilities. one more note: taking the a/c compressor off will also allow the motor to turn a little more free because it has one less thing to turn. the result will be getting a little power(notihng you will notice but it is something. |

Thats pretty crazy lol. How easy is sound deadening material to get out? I can pretty much gut the car from the front seats back..but for the front, I want to keep function. Can I gut stuff within the dash..with the doors..etc?

um if u do all these lightweight removal things ur gonna kill way more than 100 lbs. removing the ENTIRE ac system alone would get u that goal. seats, cf hood fenders doors and trunk, carpet, radio, sound deadening, a/c, power steering, lexan, lightweight seats, small battery.... those are huge weight savers if u do it all. those cf fenders might get expensive tho, maybe they make plastic ones? for the sheer math behind it id focus on trimming weight off the front end with thosebody parts and ac and power steering deletes.... once u get it all done weigh that sucker and tell us how it went! |
