Cheaper tire brands..recommendations?

Hey fellas-

I need new tires to get past inspection and the winter/spring months. I'm looking for UHP AS...no winter ones, seeing as I won't be driving it much during snowfall or really cold days anyway. What cheap brands (like 80-110 a tire tops) would you recommend? I've heard General is very good for cheap, but haven't found an AS, and I heard the sidewalls are squeamish at best. What about Kumho's and Sumitomos?

I also guarantee whatever cheap tire goes on here it'll be 5x better than the OEM ****.

Thanks!

General Exclaim UHP, according to General tire are all-season, even though TireRack disagrees

Kumho ECSTA ASX aren't bad. Some do complain soft sidewalls also.... but then again... there are better tires out there, but you need to shell out a lot more cash,

Yea..better tires are coming for the summer. These are merely just to get my by for the next half a year or so.

The ASX's are the cheaper AST's, right?

Is the sidewall flex comparable to the flex with the Generals?

Haven't driven the Generals so I can't comment.

AST is cheaper than ASX. AST's aren't UHP either

The one problem is the sizing..I have strut rub. If the dealer doesn't take care of it, I need too. I don't have the $$ to ball out, and a good solution is going down to 235. It'd be 235/45/17 right?

Now what if I want to go up in the rear..max ive read is 275...would 265 or 255 be 265/40/17 and 255/45/17?

Tirerack knows about the strut rub issue and they usually call to tell if a certain tire won't fit even with the 245/45/17 size. I don't want to replace these things twice before I really get good rubber, and since its more of a transition, id like to experiment.

Thoughts?

Well, I want to go as wide as I can on the rear without big compromise. 265/40/17 I think. For the fronts, I think 235/45/17, but if I can fit 245/45/17 without worrying about the strut rub (ie if the tire isn't as fat as my oem tire in 245/45/17) then id prefer that. And for the price range I detailed lol..

Hey, I run Kumho Ecsta MX all around and found them to be great tires and not bad on the pocket book. If you are running the stock 17's, I would go with a maximum of 255/45/17 in the rear. Any bigger and you do risk rubbing the rear fenders. For up front, I would go with 235/45/17 to avoid the rub.

I had strut rub bad and ran 235's up front for a while. I ultimately went with different rims with a better offset and am now running 245's with no issue. You may want to go with the 245 and then pick up some hub rings that will move the rim out about 2mm. That will be enough to clear 245 if you can't afford different rims.

How much were the MX's? I'm really not looking to spending more than 110$ tops a tire..these will only be on temporarily, so $$'s more of an issue than not.

I've seen Kumho's clearin 275's in the rear...although i'd never go that big. 255 seems pretty good though.

You can run 275 Kumho in the rear, but you will either need to roll/cut your rear fenders or run stiffer springs or drag bags.

The Kumho's are more than $110 a tire, more in the $125-$150 range. For something that is just plain cheap, try Yokohama AVS ES100's. I used to run them on the front in 235. They are decent tires and pretty cheap. Mine cost less than $100 per tire. Maybe try those in 235 up front and 245 in the rear (I don't think they come bigger than 245 in a 17). They are OK on grip, have a decent sidewall and are good in the rain.

Hmm..I was really looking for the 255+ in the rear to be honest with ya man. Looking at those skinny 245's gets kinda depressing..especially knowing the grip you could have lol.

Maybe i'll get the ASX's and call it a day? I got more money in my check, so im upping it to 115$ a tire and waiting on Piro to respond!
