Boostedsm's white 98 GST. 6th dsm, lets do it right.
Anyways, for some reason I was up wednesday morning at 4 am, and decided to browse craigslist. I came across this clean 98 GST and I HAD to contact the owner.(yes at 4 am, he was up as well)I liked how in the ad, the main focus was how the car was maintained, and NOT how much boost he was running or how fast it goes. Long story short, I checked it out later that day. As soon as I got there, he told me the major problems were that he thought it needed an alternator, and would need a clutch soon. It also had a dent on the driver side fender from a girl backing into him, and the driver side side skirt needs some attention. I thought for 2500 even with the work needed, it'd still be worth it. I took it for a drive, at first just taking it easy and making sure it shifted smoothly, and then pulling it to see how bad the clutch was slipping. Of course my luck, on the way back to his house the alternator died and i stopped in front of a traffic light. After that happened, we just left the car on the side of the road and walked back to his house and I went home. The guy called a tow truck and brought it to the shop asap to get a new alternator in. So, later that night, he brought it by my house and we made the deal! Because people are going to ask my plans for the car...I would say that I'm basically gonna have a clean, well running daily, at all times. I don't see myself running any bigger than a 14b or 16g turbo and pushing over 300whp. This is my daily, and I would love to keep it that way. I would be happy with 300 wheel, yet still keeping the drivability basically the same as stock.I want a good balance of maintenance/visuals/performance. My IMMEDIATE plans are to fully check out the underneath and get an idea of the overall condition of everything. A new clutch and flywheel are being ordered soon as well. I would also like to get new headlights since these are fogged like its their job, and would also love to get a nice FMIC kit, as i know how easily the sh!tty stock IC piping can leak. The car has 135k and is a 5 speed(wouldn't buy anything else) and has black interior <3 Mods so far: EXEDY stg.1 clutch kit w/ new throw out bearing 3" Punishment racing downpipe 3"megan racing catback k&N air filter Blitz BOV Turbo XS manual boost controller a/f ratio gauge new headlights w/ 6000K HID kit boost gauge aftermarket CD player ExtremePSI polished spark plug cover Stuff I have done/bought: Exedy Stage 1 clutch kit new 2gb oem headlights w/ 6000K HID kit Symborski Shifter kit(steel bushings, no more play in shifter :] ) new rear main seal new slave cylinder new clutch master cylinder new clutch line new thermostat and thermostat gasket Gates upper and lower rad hoses extremepsi 3" polished intake pipe extremepsi polished spark plug cover w/ bolts new 3" Punishment racing downpipe new clear sidemarkers for front bumper New left and right outer tie rod ends Alignment anyways, on to the most important part..PICS! Nice ride. Shoot me a PM when you're looking to buy a clutch and I'll see what kind of a deal I can get you. Always looking to help out another victim of DSMs.

I actually might have to take you up on that clutch offer. The fx300 feels like an OEM clutch right? (but obviously delivers more power) |

**update** finally got plates on the car and out on the road for the first time today. Of course, after taking it to the car wash, the clutch finally decides to take a sh!t on me. I guess it's a good thing I ordered the clutch kit last night. I went with Exedy's Stage 1 clutch kit. comes with pressure plate, obviously the clutch disc, and the release bearing. Hopefully it gets here soon cus this car is barely drivable!!

update! Over the weekend I bought a bunch of parts. Other than the Exedy clutch kit that i ordered basically right after i bought the car, i purchased:
new 2gb oem headlights( cant see anything out these fogged up ones) Symborski Shifter kit(steel bushings, no more play in shifter :] ) new rear main seal new clutch line Gates upper and lower rad hoses extremepsi 3" polished intake pipe extremepsi polished spark plug cover I will have everything in by Wednesday, so hopefully the new clutch will be installed this coming weekend! I am excited, to finally have a good clutch so i can see the car's potential. But, I have to go easy, as I have spent over 700$ already, and have only had the car for 5 days. After clutch is installed, my next plans are to get the car ready for snow. This means atleast 2 new front tires, check brakes, etc. (Stuff adds up quickly!! $$) Also, I have a slow coolant leak and need to figure out where it's coming from. Gotta do a pressure test on it soon. |

update**this saturday I installed Exedy clutch kit, rear main seal, and upper and lower rad hoses.(you will find a nice surprise with my hose install at the bottom pic) It was my first clutch job so I took my time to make sure I didn't have to do it over. Long story short, after removing the trans and stock clutch, I realized I needed a flywheel. I was kinda stuck because it was a saturday night, no stores were open, nor did I really want to spend the money for a new one. But, I lucked out..I found a local guy on craigslist that had a 7 bolt OEM flywheel with like 80k on it that was perfect for 30$! So, I was back on track and finished it up.
So far, the car feels awesome. Such a difference a nice clutch kit makes. Pedal grabs less than halfway off the floor which is perfect. So, Exedy is a thumbs up for me! Anyway, here are some not so great phone pics I took while I was working on it in the shop: exedy stage 1 clutch kit old clutch new rear main seal pic of the solid trans new clutch and pressure plate installed also installed polished spark plug cover and removed ugly heat shield. here is what i found while changing hoses. Previous owner put stop leak in it -____- I had to flush it out, and put new coolant in it, and it's STILL rusty-colored. well, i planned on changing the radiator soon anyways!! my next steps are: install the brand new 2gb headlights(HID's should be here anyday) find out where exhaust leak is coming from get ready for winter/snow. tires/brakes/etc. Last edited by boostedsm; 12-12-2011 at 01:53 AM. |
