PC to Mac file transfers?

Im hoping someone can help soon because I have to switch the files and leave to go back to school soon.

My computer died a couple weeks ago and I've been in need of one so my mom upgraded to a new Mac book pro and i'm getting her old Compaq laptop. She has all of her files from work on the pc and she needs them on the mac before I take the the PC. I have tried flash drives and networks but the Mac doesn't seem to recognize the files. I know I need to convert them to Mac files but I don't know how. Can anyone tell me how to get my files from the PC to the Mac in terms I can understand? Thanks

From what I know, this isnt possible, since the operating systems use different file structures, and also the formatting of the drive is quite different. The only possibility is MAYBE a converter for them, but I dont know if that is possible either.

If this is wrong, someone correct me?

I got most of them to transfer through an ethernet connection to get access to the pc from the mac. I think I have my problem solved. This can be closed. Thanks
