VW Cat Converter Question

I have a friend who has an 02 Jetta with 130K. He has some problems and dealer said of things that needed to be done he needed a new Cat. They gave him an estimate of $750 for parts and install.

Now the last time I needed a new cat it cost me like $150 at an independent muffler shop. However, this was 8 years ago and on '91 Cav.

Is there anything about VWs that justifies a new cat for $750 or is he being hosed.

a new cat is not that expensive. find out of they are doing a new o2 sensor, and if not, tell him to take it to any old muffler shop and have them do it.

They are probably using a VW cat. Anything from VW is going to be 10x more expensive than anywhere else besides maybe a brake light switch.

Thanks, however I think his issues are deeper. I just did some research and came up with this recall http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3265690
which I what I think is what is wrong with his car.

the problem with aftermarket cats is that the pcm is very strict on a lot of newer cars. so when you put a new cat on the light may go off forever, or for a couple months and come back on. i used to see this a lot at honda.

i wasn't aware of this problem and actually just pointed it out to a friend. the dude should take that info back to the dealer and see what they say, maybe they will end up doing it all free of charge.
