A sad day in motorsports! :(

After his win at the Grand Prix of Monza, Michael Schumacher announced his retirement following this years season.

As of this afternoon, he has 90 total Grand Prix wins and 153 podiums. Nothing short of incredible!

Discuss.

Man, i thought somebody died! Never really watch any open-wheel racing, but everybody knows the name. Awesome career.

I heard on the news or somewhere that he is one of the highest paid athletes per year.

Quite true. In fact, by choosing to retire, he turns up a deal estimated in excess of $1B to drive for Sauber BMW F1 next year (mostly merchandising income, but still... gah damn).

He got the nod as the highest paid athlete last year or the year before that earning $76 million. As much as it might be sad to see him go, he has done it all, won 5 championships/helped Ferrari snatch 6 constructors titles...he has nothing left to prove or race for. The guy has worked his ass off and deserves time to spend with his family and enjoy life. Ferrari's lineup of Raikonnen and Massa for next year doesnt sound too bad for next year.

He could always start drifting. That would be one hell of a career move...from the most controlled racing in the corners, to being out of control. LOL.

I suggest that he buy an Evo and AutoX it. LOL.

Rumor on the block says he's going to be opening up his own Ferrari dealership and continue to contribute to the design team to help them engineer new models and changes.

I can only imagine the premiums his dealership would be able to get away with.

I can't wait to get my hands on one of those...oh wait...I can't afford a regular Ferrari, let alone a Michael Schumacher Special Edition. LMAO!!

In a way I can agree with where you are coming from. Depending on how reliable McLaren engines are next year, Alonso may or may not be the fastest person around. It's certainly going to be a toss up and not as "guaranteed" anymore...
