hey guys im planning on buying a 09 lancer gts new in philly but i live in nj, does anyone know if there is any problems or fees i have to pay besides the tax difference. also if anyone knows about if the dealer puts tint on your car and i get it inspected in NJ are they gonna rip my front 2 off?

At least in PA you'll have to get it inspected within 15 days if you buy it out of state, I assume it's the same there. I know a few people in NJ that have trouble finding a shop that will pass front tint there. What's funny is we can't have any tint but don't fail inspection for it.

You pay the state's tax rate that the car will be registered in.

Doesn't matter too much... my last car was purchased in Delaware. It was no more painful than purchasing in-state.

Right... and if you're buying it from a dealer, they should take care of that for you when doing the paperwork.

I just bought a car in PA and live in NJ. I only had for a couple months before I flipped it to a buddy, but here goes:

1. When you buy the car you will pay taxes at the time of transaction for the state you are registering it in. So, you live in NJ, you pay NJ taxes and doc fees. Double check all the paperwork and make sure this is the case. Any franchise dealer probably deals with this process a few times a month, so it is common and they know what to do.

2. You will be issued a temporary tag from the state you bought it in. So, you are buying a PA car, you will get a special temporary tag from PA that is for out of state people. It is 100% legal to drive the car on this tag.

3. Within a couple weeks you will recieve your permanent plates and registration from NJ. They will most likely be mailed to the dealer you bought the car from, so remember that you will either have to drive there or have them mail it to you to get the permanent plates.

4. Once you get the permanent plates and registration you have 14 days to get the car inspected at either a DMV location or private shop. Regardless of where you bought the car it must pass NJ inspection. So, if you have tint that is illegal in NJ it will have to come off unless you can find someone to look the other way.
