Stung by a Bee

My Alienbee's B1600 arrived today! I have a light stand and umbrella that I received as a gift from the head photog here. I'm quite happy as this is my first studio lighting purchase. It's currently here at work, sitting in the studio, but will be transported home to be used there and outdoors shortly. Photos OF the B1600:

I'm just happy and had to share!

Congrats man, so just one for now?

And is the 1600 more powerful then the AB800's? I've never really looked into them too much, I've only seen the AB800's before.

the numerical number is the effective watt-second rating. Though, this should be ignored. The true watt-second is what matters. The effective watt-second rating is more or less an outdated terminology that still exists for marketing purposes.

AB1600 has a 1600 Ws rating or 640 Ts rating
AB800 800 Ws rating or 320 Ts rating

watt second ratings between manufacturers also don't mean much since there is no standard rating, especially when factoring in the reflector design. It's similar to tire tread wear ratings, which are only relevant within the same manufacturer. 240 treadwear between a Toyo and a Yokohama tire will not be the same. Same goes for a 320 Ts rating between an Alien Bee and a Chimera unit.

Very nice. I have an AB400 and an AB800 with a set of Cybersync triggers. I highly recommend the Cybersyncs if you want to ditch the sync cord. They also allow you to use Speedlites with in conjunction with the strobes which is nice.

Thanks all, I'll prob be purchasing an AB800 once I get some spare $ (which may never happen lol). I just borrowed a sync cord for a shoot I have tomorrow and will be purchasing a cheapie from B&H shortly.

Eventually I will be doing the radio transceiver setup, but that's $ I don't have right this moment either.
