Can a 225 width tire fit on a 8" width wheel?

Can a 225 width tire fit on a 245 width wheel?

We all know a thinner wheel for a winter tire is best for traction in the snow. A coworker told me a 225 width tire can fit on a 245 wheel. I was surprised to hear this... can anyone validate this claim?

I'm in-between putting either the 225 or 235 size Blizzak on my stock wheels... 245 is too wide IMO for winter

thanks!

what do you mean 245 width wheel? What's the width of your wheels in INCHES? I'm sure it doesn't actually measure 245mm... that's the width of the tread of the tire, not the width of the wheel it's mounted to.

I think you need at least a basic understanding of wheels and tires before you start making decisions on winter tire sizes.

I have more of a basic understanding... after these comments I realized I should have said 8" wheel... currently the stock tire size is 245 so I wanted to use that as a basis.

I'm going to go with a 235... agree with the first comment that 225 is too thin

thanks for the quick responses

245 millimeters = 9.6 inches
225 millimeters = 8.8 inches

A 225 will fit no issues. It will be stretched though as stated in the first post. For basic reference, if these are stock rims, you can usually +/- 20mm to the stock tire size and have no issues.

thanks man... after I wrote 8" I went to tirerack and their calculator said you take millimeter size (ex: 245) and divide it by 25.4 to get the inches.

thanks again for the helpful reply RC1488

dude, you gotta fix your thread title again lol. If you have stock wheels on your STi they are 8" wide. Your question needs to be "can I fit 225 width tires on my 8" wide wheels?" The basic answer to that question is yes, but it is not the optimal size for the wheel. Now, since you're talking snow tires, and are not looking for optimal dry handling, then a 225 is probably a good choice. Personally, I'd go with a 235, but what you really need to pay attention to is the overall tire height. If you change that it will throw your speedo reading off, as well as effectively change your final drive ratio.

Look on the manufacturer's web site for the total height (diameter) of the OEM tire, then make sure what ever tire you replace it with matches the OEM tire's height as closely as possible. For example, a 225/40/18 will usually be shorter overall than a 245/40/18, so in that case you'd probably want to go with a 225/45/18 to gain back that height you lost.

the more I think about it 225 is too thin... I appreciate the replies as they slapped me around and made me realize that while we do get snow in this area, it isn't every day and that "wider is better"

Im not sure but i think the stock rims on my 06 are 17x8 and they have a 225/45R17 on them stock. So a 225 fits fine on an 8 inch rim.

I have a set of 16x8" wheels and the size I was told to use at the tire place was 225/50/16 and thats what I run.

The SLK and the Crossfire both have 7.5" front rims with a 225mm tire stock. Again, I'd go with either 225 or 235 depending on the combination of aspect ratio that's closest to the stock 245 overall tire diameter.

If my search is correct, the stock tire is 245/40R18? If that's the case go with 225/45R18 or 235/40R18 if you're using the same rim.

The OP has a STI, not a SLK or crossfire. Those stock tire numbers are irrelevant along with the speedometer difference from the stock tire. They do give you a general idea of error you would see by changing the width and aspect ratio though

The tire diameter and circumference is useful also

Actually, I was referring to the fact that they have a 225 width front tire on a 7.5" wheel, I know he has an '08 STi. I searched for the stock tire/wheel setup on that and came up with 245/40R18 so that's what I used to compare.

They will mount easily. I run 215mm tires on an 8" wide rim. Obviously there is some stretch but it isn't extreme like some VIP and drift cars you see.

225s will fit perfectly fine on a 8" wide wheel. Stock late model STis have 17x8s and run a 225/45R17
