personally, sti, i think the sound is unique, reliable, and the actual make up of the car (especially interior) is way better than the EVO if you care about that kind of thing. Performance wise I think it comes down to the type of driver you are.

Like all the Evo owners here, I tend to be quite partial to DSM, so I'll agree EVO IX MR hands down. With that being said, I do agree that if you're merely looking for a DD, then consider an STi...subtle things make all the difference. For example, the Suby has cruise, the Evo doesn't (unless you get an after market set-up).
I've driven both platforms and I gotta say, IMO the STi is sloppy in comparison to the Evo in the corners. If your going to do any modifications, then go Mitsu...you'll get way more power for less $$ and headaches. Someone in the first page of this thread summed it up the best, it all falls onto personal preferance. After owning an Evo, I'd honestly never want to own an STi...and i'm sure vise-versa for the suby guys.

evo hands down. unfortunately, i love my subarus so i'll be in a perpetual state of making subarus as fast as evos which is the harder, longer, more arduous path and wondering the whole way if it's worth it or not to just get an evo.
