RockNRace's 86' 535i LSX BMW: Turbo and Tuned!

for some stupid reason, i decided to buy my brothers 1986 bmw 535i. it ran and drove and is in decent shape. but the rear main seal pukes oil. and seeps coolant here and there. so instead of doing the sensible thing and repairing the stock engine. I've decided to drop in a 5.3 truck engine and 4l80e. the over all goal is to keep this as cheap as possible. I'm looking to keep it under 5k if possible.

picked up a lowish milage 4l80e

progress from here will be slow going because of school and junk. but my ultimate goal will be to make bimmerfest at the beginning of august

You best not back out like me. This is gonna be good. If you need any E30 stuff, HMU.

dropped the trans in, had tho cut the floor on both side, and still need to do some trimming, but no big-e, also had to order a front sump oil pan/pick up tube/oil filter adapter. hoping that i may be able to drop the engine and trans in together this weekend. but maybe not, we'll see http://i1107.photobucket.com/albums/...ps37c23470.jpg

3 more weeks of school, then just one summer class to worry about. soon :)

rocknrace03 04-21-2014 08:50 AM

this weekend I got new Canton front sump oil pan and gto oil pick up installed in the engine, replaced the rear main seal, cut the the headers and flipped them backwards, and cleared out the old engine harness from the car. I wanted to test fit the engine, but my engine crane is from the 60's and can not lift high enough, and is beginning to leak hydraulic fluid, so I'm waiting for harbor freight to get more 2ton's in. also ordered some slider mount plates since its cheaper to buy than have the pieces water jet and junk.

yup. the driver side won't clear the steering box( and they may not fit at all). i do intend to turbo the car eventually, so routing them forward is my best option. hoping i don't need to spend the time to fabricate my own headers, but won't really know until i try to sit the engine in the car.

What's the fun in a swap if you don't have to make ****?

Glad to see your taking my advice. After doing the long tube install on my car this weekend... there is plenty of room to convert them to 180*. I got giggity thinking about it.

school is over wahoo!
since my last update, I've gotten a bunch of parts in, switched my hydro boost brakes over to vacuum boost, mated my engine and trans together, and preparing to drop this puppy in later today, hopefully have it mounted up and ready for finishing touches sunday night

definitely not going to make it, i had some issues with mounting the trans, that set me back, so i won't even begin to work on all the wiring and billion other things needed to complete until tomorrow morning, including a drive shaft. june meet for sure though!

rocknrace03 05-19-2014 06:59 PM

well this weekend was fairly successful.

I finally ordered a single pass radiator from summit, and with a great idea from THE denmah, i modified it to become a dual pass, same side enter/exit which is going to make hoses a breeze. I'm not the best aluminum welder, but it came out okay.

also finally got the engine mounted exactly how i wanted it, so i decided to install my B&M shifter, with a little bit of planning, i was able to retain the stock console trim. the shift boot works, but is a little tight when in low gear or park, so maybe i can have my grandma sew me a new one or something.

also installed my walbro 255 in tank with very minimal modification, but took no pictures unfortunately.

heres how the car sits for now

i just began a summer class, and work a few days a week, so most of the progress will take place on the weekends, but I'm hoping to get this going soon, minus a few little bits and a driveshaft, i think i have it all, or all on order

Nice progress so far!
