I would like to buy a skimboard in the next few days but I don't really know to much about them. I was looking at the Zap Pro medium or large. Are they decent? I'm about 165lbs.

Where are you planning on riding? Do you want to just skim up and down the beach like the little kids or do you want to go out in the waves ride them and do tricks? Have you ever skimmed before?
I don't like zap I never have. I have been with Victoria for over 10 years and love their boards. There are a ton of other boards out there harvest, exile and so on.
Check out skimonline.com they have forums and you can sometimes find a good used board cheap.
I would recommend a M/L board for you. I ride a M/L from 155lbs up to 185 I just ordered a new Large pro board from Victoria so I can get some more float but still love riding my smallers boards for doing backflips and what not.
If you have money to spend I recommend getting a carbon board if you ride a normal glass board and jump on a carbon board it is a world of difference.
If you are in South Jersey and want to try out different boards and different sizes and rails let me know I have about 6 victoria boards from glass to full carbon boards to normal rails to pro boards.

I'm actually in Japan right now but I appreciate that. I've never really gotten into skimboarding in the past, I used to just buy the cheap wooden boards on the boardwalk and ride the sand. I would like to however play around with the waves a bit. I just found out my next duty station starting in October is Jacksonville, Florida so I'll be around a beach constantly.
As for what board to get, I honestly know nothing about them. I just started researched today and ZAP was the first thing I came across. I did sese Victoria though, and they seem pretty nice too. I'm not really to sure about getting a used board though because I would never be able to check it out in person being so far away, and if they're anything like snowboards you have to be careful buying used.
I'll look into the carbons, but I'm leaning towards something around 200-300 as opposed to 300-500 only becuase it will be my first season.

Like I said check out skimonline.com just keep in mind that forum is owned my exile skimboards so they are pretty biased towards those boards but a lot of the guys that compete are on that site so you can get some honest reviews. Just to forwarn you the forum is made up of younger kids so the maturity level is not there.
Zap is huge in FL you will find most people down there ride zaps. The best thing is to try some different boards and see what you like. Each board has it pros and cons and you may like the way one is shaped better then another one.
I am a huge fan of Victoria boards but I have been riding them for years. I have ridden other companies boards but always go back to vic and they treat me well.

exile, zap or victoria that's the only boards I have ever used. Vic boards more for sand riding and exile and zap for the waves but I heard vic wave boards are good don't know cause I never tried them. You might also want to check out skimcity.com run drop slide :)

its just something different. its almost like a combination of surfing, snowboarding, and skateboarding... the best part about it is that unlike surfing, if there aren't very big waves, you can still have a ton of fun with it. I don't think i've ever seen a surfer land a kickflip with his surf board, but some skimboarders can.

IMO it is a lot harder then surfing and you can do it anywhere. You can flatland skim if there are no waves, you can ride the waves if they are small or big. Going headon into a 8ft wave turning and then riding it is far harder then surfing on a wave.
Also if anyone is down in Avalon this summer and wants to try it let me know. I also have a bungee so I bungee skim which is a blast.
