Is it illegal to remove a resonator?

Just curious, my buddy's civic has no resonator on his exhaust, could he get a ticket for it? i keep telling him to put it back on, but he says he wont get pulled over. We are in NY, if itmakes a difference

Well if the car is pretty loud, then he could get a ticket. Here in NJ, the law states that a muffler must not allow loud noises or annoying smoke. 39:3-70. So regardless, if the resonator is removed, and the car is extremely loud, then sure he can recieve a ticket. Depends on the cop, the car, and the location. I am not sure about NY laws, not too familiar with them.
