Ok I guess this is the start of my 'build journal' for my car. Bought this thing bone stock as a gift to mysef for coming back from deployment alive.

When the Evo emerged for US sale in 03, I instantly fell in love and like most Evo owners, had to have one. My Evo VIII GSR was always just a dream for me to own, did a tour in Iraq just to finally get one and then another tour in Afghanistan for what I refer to as "mod money." haha It was origionally sold by a dealer in Seattle, WA. where it was the owner of the dealers wife's demo and literally sat in their garage. I purchsed it through a dealer in Great Falls, MT, where I was currently stationed with the military and eventually trailerd it from Montana to Pennsylvania. I really hate to admit it, but it basically sits covered in my garage and is only driven on nice, sunny days. I know all the hard-core Subie/Evo guys are shaking your head at me for that..but hey, it is what it is. Bought it at the end of '04 with 4k and currently it only has 35k total miles, so ya can see how little it's actaully driven, but I still managed to make it a certified 100mph club car from Beaver Springs Dragway. ;)

Alright, enough with the history lesson, lets get to the part that everyone always wants to know, the mods...the car is in a huge transition right now and is constantly 'evolving.' I've tried to keep the mods tasteful, yet practical, so here is a current list along with some pics. Everyone always asks "why didn't you go with a huge turbo, like a 35R etc?" And the simple answer is, I still really love to drive my car. I mean, nothing against those of you with large frame turbos, but I didn't want all the dreaded lag, so I opted instead for the CBRD BBK set-up. For the same money, I got awesome power gains, plus I can still take it out on the weekends and destroy some backroad twisties. Perhaps one day I may take it to that level, but for now it's a killer street and wild auto-x car. I'll keep updating as I get more done or you can check my profile as the car is in the shop more then in my garage.

Here are the numbers thus far:

Since the recent 2.2 motor, water/meth kit car put down 607hp@38psi

Car origionally put down 425whp/391wtq @ 28psi with a mild tune on CBRD's Mustang II load-bearing dyno on 93 octane pump-gas. However, with some tweaking and a more aggressive tune, it put down 456whp/422wtq @ 31psi on straight pump-gas. Did some more tweaking and with an extremely aggressive tune and some 100 octane race fuel made 504whp/443wtq @ 33psi (which is about all the stock block could take). I want to break 600whp, so the stock bottom end will have to go. That's next on the agenda...****ing money-pit.

Nice car minus the yellow. Never was a fan but hell it is still clean. I suggest you get the stock styled carbon fiber lip, and the carbon fiber fog light shrouds which people rivet on there. That would set the front of the car off.

I have the VIS G-sport front bumper that's currently being painted...has a lip already. Should make it look slightly more aggressive.

yeah that was me lol...shoulda stopped me on the way out
there are 2 other yellow ones running around besides mine, one is a guy in our club with a lot of mismatched cf peices/black wheels, and another with a stock exterior, but he's a cock and tries to race everyone lol.

Updated as of 4/25 with a ton of new parts, lemme know what ya'll think! :)

Put down 417whp/391wtq on CBRD's mustang II dyno! The TQ is what amazed me, a huge gain over last time!! I knew we wouldn't gain too much HP b/c it was significantly warmer then when dyno'd with the turbo install (mid Feb). so a few HP gain is ok with me! :) ****ing thing squats tough on that dyno...

Updated 2 June 10. Added a bunch of new parts to the origional thread post with some pics I took at the Carlisle P&S show.

As if one fuel pump wasn't enough, added the Full Blown dual 225 pump hanger and pumps. Finally got rid of my horrid VTA bov for a APS twin-vent. Replaced the HKS upper IC piping for the JMF polished upper. Added the JMF med battery kit.

Check out the pics and let me know what ya'll think of the new set up.

Hopefully now I can start on the exterior with some subtle mods. Actually just picked up a set of IX tails so they'll be getting installed some time today.

We'll be at the OC car show, stop by!

Ok so I finally got a different set of wheels on the other day.. what do ya'll think?

I know they aren't perfect for the car, but I got them for free...that's right FREE. My buddy sold his Evo and gave em to me for some stock parts...I'll keep em til I find the set I actually want.

Yellow is a tuff car to put wheels on IMO, matte black rpf1 would look sweet but like i said earlier there everywere now. TE37's aren't a bad choice either but i'm curious to see what color your looking to do.
Maybe matte black with custom yellow Volk stickers? hmmm

Yellow on an Evo is definitely a tough one to work with. IMO AlterEvo, for your next set of wheels, I think you should keep the wheels bright to semi bright. I think for you something bright (below)... along with a set of JDM headlights would set your car off perfectly. Just my 2cents though. Go for what you love.

What, Mustangs can't use quality wheels? RPF1s are the cheapest light weight wheel on the market. Functionality can't be "played out".

That's not what i meant at all. So many people are using them for the look & not their functionality anymore, to then see them on a 'stang threw me off (they looked good). Theres other options out there to be different if your going for a look & not the actual use of them. Even Enkei made some new wheels that look good & aren't the typical rpf1. I just hate seeing the same old thing over & over especially when it's for looks & not function.
I don't mind going to a hpde or autoX and seeing them, it's every car show, meet, cruise, random sightings that kills it when you know the car isn't used.

I agree, yellow sucks to work with wheel wise, that's why it's taken me 6+ years to change them...and I'm still not completely sold on my FREE set LOL :)

i'm working on a set of 9 headlight to match my 9 tails...kinda like the gloss black instead of the MR's flat...one thing at at time. I honestly concentrated all my efforts under the hood and basically kept the exterior stock, now it's def time for some styling changes. JDM rear, mirrors, etc, I really just want suble changes.

Well since I haven't updated in quiet a while, heres what's new. Just ordered the new and much larger BBK-B compressor wheel from CBRD and Blouch to upgrade my current BBK setup. My current Evo IX turbo, which was already ported out with larger, more agressive compressor wheel (BBK full) will have to be taken off, re-machined to accomodate an even larger compressor wheel. Current estimates put the hp increase at anywhere from 50-70whp gain over my current BBK.

I'll have some dyno sheets, numbers and of course some pics as soon as I get it back.

Shades of Grey did my windows, really impressed with the quality of they're work...went 20% all the way around and it's a huge difference, both for climate and astetics. Yesterday I finally removed my OEM trunk badges and added a black UK Evo VIII badge that I've had sitting in my garage for a few years already.

I have been kicking around the idea of a CF hood/trunk combo for quite some time now. I can't seem to decide if it's the right way to go w/ my car. I recently kinda fell into a Seibon CWII hood. I was leaning towards the OEM style, just wanted to get some feedback. What do ya'll think?

If I do the hood, I'm going to eventually do the Do Luck duckbill style cf trunk (wingless)...

Cf would be a good look, I would suggest getting it clear coated before putting it on though, most companies use a gel coat that fades, yellows ect. A clear coat should stop that

the hood and trunk are already light as is. i cant justify spending that much money on both for very little weight savings, and then not to mention worrying about fading/cracking ect...

do you have the BBK-B on your car now? this is the turbo im looking at right now. should be making a bunch of purchases this week or next for mine.:)

I'm pretty sure carbon hoods and trunks are actually heavier than the stock ones. But maybe I'm thinking of STi's

The hoods make no difference for the most part especially for the price and ease of yellowing/cracking, the trunk is a heavily debated topic but obviously also depends on a wing or not & which brand.

Few friends have gone with cf hoods & trunk swaps and a few swear by the trunk being a lot lighter while others wanna follow some of the old talk from evom on saying it doesn't make a difference. The one friend who had seibon hood and trunk and is the most credible on this says the trunk was a huge difference & i beleive him.

I'd also vote to skip the carbon trunk and hood. Your car is garaged most of the time so the lifespan would be longer than average but I think it would ruin the clean look you have going on with the car.

the hood and trunk are already light as is. i cant justify spending that much money on both for very little weight savings, and then not to mention worrying about fading/cracking ect...

do you have the BBK-B on your car now? this is the turbo im looking at right now. should be making a bunch of purchases this week or next for mine.:)

yeah i got one when it was still in test phase. I definatly love the turbo and the power it puts down, but the drivability is what has me totally sold. There is a ton of useable power, barely (if any) lag. I'd say go w it, dollar for dollar you can't beat it.

Haven't been much of a fan of VIII people swapping to IX bumpers even though arguably the IX is one of the best looking front bumpers. Why not just stick with your VIII bumper, get a simple carbon lip & finish the JDM rear setup? I don't like yellow evo's but at the same time i do because there not the run of the mill evo & considering how many meets/shows/events i go to especially dsm/evo specific your not seeing to many VIII front ends anymore.

cliff notes, yellow viii's aren't around to often especially from what I'm seeing these days so keep it "original" but add some simple flavor to it.

I'm 99% sure I'm going with it. It was this or the HTA green. The bbk-b seems to be more pump gas friendly and make more power than the green.

I need to get In touch with Chad finally and figure out if he has any and how much. I heard there was an issue with the guy he was getting the bearings from stopped making them or were put on a long back order??

i will be totally honest with you, but i've heard a lot of horror stories about fp's failing b/c they cast their own housings. I'm glad I went w the bbk. My dyno numbers were off of Sunoco 93 pump gas, so yea, it's very pump gas friendly.

yeah i agree, i'm not into the whole crazy exterior look, i'm more subtle. I'd rather have tons of **** under the hood then a slow stock car that looks good. that's IMO tho

I like simple also. IMO, a front lip would really change the look of the car. I debated about a 9 bumper but I'm glad I stuck with the 8 and went with the lip. Looks really nice (and stock) in person. And I agree with TalonTSI, yellow Evos are very rare these days.

Nice car man. Hearing how much you like your BBK really makes me wonder if anything bigger is worth it. I keep flip flopping back and forth. Anyway, your car must be a blast to drive on the street. I dont think the IX front is worth it, the VIII with a lip looks really good if you ask me. I have a cheap ebay lip on mine and I am more than happy with it and I dont worry if it gets mess up.

good luck with whatever choice you make. I loved my FP Black but at times I wanted better response. I have a problem with being power hungry so I'd never get anything smaller than a 35R after this. It's a shame we all can't have 2 Evo's...haha

I'll be honest with you dude, I really wanted to go with a monster turbo like everyone else haha...like a 35/42r...but I still wanted to be able to drive it on the streets with not problems, and I didn't want the dreaded 'lag' of said monster turbo set up. yeah tons of power looks nice and is def. bragging rights, but in all honesty, my BBK-B comes in early, comes in hard, and doesn't drop off. Plus I have no driveablility issues running over 500hp...

As far as the exterior, I like simple. I'm not into wide-body's and tons of cf. All I really want yet is a jdm rear bumper with the diffuser and a front lip. Eventually I'm gonna get different wheels, but I'm content for now.

Also, the $$$ issue was huge for me too. I got my turbo, cams, valve springs, manifold,....etc etc...everything to support it, including my fuel system for around 5K. An AMS 35R kit for instance starts around 5K and all you get is the turbo, manifold, wastegate and o2 dump...sooo the decision was easy for me.

Whatever you finally decide to go with, you're gonna love how responsive your Evo will become.

The s2's make quite a larger difference then the s1's, prob. b/c of the upgraded springs, seats, etc. I didn't get the chance to get it on the dyno, we just did some bs laptop tuning so far. I don't drive my evo in the winter, so it's been sitting since september..haha. I drove it about 15 total miles and from what I could feel the top end is quite a bit stronger.

that bbk makes a huge difference, I did as much as I could with the $$ I had (and what my wife let me, haha). The 504 run was in the middle of Feb. on a dyno-jet. I can't wait to see what I make now with those new cams and once I finally get my alcohol injection on. What do you have done to yours so far?

nothing yet haha. the parts i have now are collecting dust. waiting on a MAP order to come in next week. trying to get a hold of Chad is damn near impossible for me, we usually just play phone tag. from what i heard the bbk-b is back in production again finally. just not sure if i want to take a break already and run the stock turbo or what...

chad tuned my car with all the bolt-ons when I first started modding my car. It ran fairly decent on the stock, but it was the smaller core 8 stock housing, so it was really limited. The good thing is you have an IX already, so you wouldn't need to buy the core, Blouch could just port your stock turbo and put in the BBK wheel. I love mine, I'm glad I didn't do a monster set-up. maybe someday, but not for a long time.

A few months has passed since my last "AlterEvo" build update. Since the last time, the motor has been yanked, a 2.2L stroker built, tons of new bits and pieces here and there and some pics.

Motor: 2.2L stroker, forged internals, CP pistons, Carillo rods, tuff crank, GSC S2's, valve springs, retainers, seats, ported intake mani, spacer, aem methanol kit, twin disc in, flywheel, shep stage 3 transfer case, ams axels, the llst goes on and on. Put down a cool 607whp @ 38psi and 50/50 meth mix

Cosmetics: rexpeed cf front lip, rexpeed cf mirror covers, smoked window visors, JDM smoked rear window visor, powdercoated valve cover / rad cooling plate (I KNOW, why lime green...honestly, I don't know, but it does draw you in and it really has grown on me). A few other bits here and there.

14 April 2012

Took the car to Beaver Springs today for the test and tune. I only have about 1000 miles on the new engine and drivetrain, but wanted to put in a little work on the track. Here are the results:

I did NOT launch the car, played it like a stop light start and babied it off the line. Only had 93 octane pump gas and my street Nitto's (I hate them btw) and the car was in the low 12's. I did some tweaking and my best pass of the day was my final pass, 11.107 @ 122.78mph. Not bad for no 2-step launch and street tires on pump gas. I figure it should be in the mid to low 10's when I can finally launch it and get some slicks/100 octane. Stay tuned for more!

I'm car 16 in the right lane.

Honestly, If you really want to dive into an area not many people get into, I would say invest in aero parts. It's not "glamorous" looking or as "baller" as a set wheels, however, the aero parts on my car may in fact be the best mod I've done to the car. And it's been my secret weapon for several years now. 1 You'll be reducing high pressure underneath the car (and this is a big deal) allowing your tires and suspension to REALLY work as they should. 2, the car will be more stable at high speed and high speed cornering. And 3, with reduced high pressure under the car comes less drag and you'll be accelerating faster at high speeds. Above 100mph high speed cornering and stability is amazing.

If you think your car is fast now with your current power, imagine how fast it will be when you don't have to slow down for the turns.

Love the build so far.

Question about your motor:

I know the 2.2L has an optimal rod/stroke ratio when using a 4g64 block, a 94mm crank and custom 159mm rods, as it moves the wrist pin way up on the piston and in turn reduces side loading and all that jazz.

Did you base your 2.2L off of a 4g63 or 4g64 block? Do you know what mm crank and rods were used? Just curious, as I really like the idea of a 2.2L, as you can still rev it out safely in a 4g63 configuration unlike the 2.3L (based off of a 4g63). I built a LR 2.4L, but am definitely considering de-stroking my 2.4L to a 2.2L in the distant future to improve longevity and have the ability to rev to the moon.

Oh, and in regards to your question...put money aside for when you grenade your trans/diff/axles/etc . It's not if, but when!

I think a nice set of matte black powdercoated IX BBS' would set your car off.

Do you have a lot of suspension work done to the car? I just threw an Energy Suspension Polyurethane Full Bushing Kit in my car to wake up the suspension. That may be something to consider, as it will change the whole dynamic of how your car handles.

Good luck!

Edit: I just saw that you had HeadGames do your head. What did that run you/how did it turn out? You can PM me if you'd like.
