hey, this turned into a thread about setting up a headlight baking party...
its gonna be at my (TROLL's) house in langhorne / newtown area on sunday feb 12th... time to be determined.
I'll help you bake your lights, but expect to do a good amount of the work on your own lights yourself, especially if we get more than a few people doing this. I've done 3 sets now, both bugeye and lameeye ;) so we'll get yours done safe and sound.
Bring:
a tube of clear or black silicone sealant
new blinker bulbs if you want (see posts below discussing that)
Official Signup sheet:
TROLL - (just helping)
TehWagon - bugeye WRX
WKDerf - boringeye WRX
sisforsurfing - bugeye WRX (4-5pm)
R33P3R007 - Cobalt SS
HuffRex - boringeye WRX
busyb2100 - boringeye WRX

I don't know. Troll was craving headlamps, so he decided to bake some.
TehWagon
01-25-2006, 09:36 PM
well if he's got the craving, tell him to bake mine! i need mine cleared in the WORST way!
man, have i ever watched so many people ruin their ovens baking lights or just ruin lights. my buddy just did that the other day, melted his lights. (having a 1 year old can make you distracted, lol)

Why are we putting headlights into ovens?

Troll cooked these things to remove the lens and then remove the internal amber lens. After that they were resealed and reassembled to be installed tomorrow.

Baking the headlights will allow you to remove the lens that covers the lamp assembly much easier.
It has to be done right, or you will destroy the headlights.
It will allow you to make your lights completely clear by giving you access to the inside of the assembly and fiddle with it from there.

i'll be happy to host a headlight baking day if there's demand for it. it'd be ideal to use someone elses house for it unless its sometime between feb 8 and 14th when i have my house to myself :)

i've never painted them but i'm not opposed to giving it a shot. thats something we can work on together.
so we've got:
tehwagon

scoobynubietoo!
are you guys interested in getting together maybe on Feb 12th to give this a shot? or we can do another date but it'll probably have to be at someone elses house.
TehWagon
01-26-2006, 10:56 AM
feb 12th works for me!!! i can't host unfortunately...
paint could be tricky, wouldn't want to leave them apart for too long and not be able to reseal... or do you stick them back in the oven to get them gooey to reseal them anyway?
TROLL
01-26-2006, 11:22 AM
yeah there's no time limit on how long you have them apart, i put fresh silicone on them anyways to make sure they reseal well. i'm actually a fan of resealing 2x so you can be sure you wont have problems down the road.

eastsidesubie- what kind of paint did you use for the inside of the light?
also, subie folk: the clear bulbs, are they jdm? i called wilkins and they weren't sure they could get them- are they aftermarket only?
TROLL
02-08-2006, 01:09 PM
clear blinker bulbs? thats what you have underneath the amber bubble we're gonna remove. you can either pick up an amber bulb and use that, or pick up the silverstar bulbs for like $20 and use them. the silverstars look silver but the blink amber. or you can be like me and buy the $4 amber bulbs and give them a thin coat of chrome/silver spraypaint and they will look silver but blink amber that way too.
TehWagon
02-08-2006, 01:51 PM
ok sorry to be a pita but there are two different things we're talking about- lenses and bulbs... the stock lense is amber, the stock bulb is clear. soooo... so theoretically i could paint the stock ones with a thin coat of silver?
I was going to order them, but this is something I can pick up at just any old pep boys? Ideally, I'd love to get the amber bulbs (smaller) and not have that bubbly lense at all, to make the headlights more simple looking.
Also, what kind of paint do people usually use in painting the insides of the headlights? I'd like to do that too on Sunday.
Shall I also come with a supply of silicone sealer to contribute to the endeavor? Please just tell me what kind to buy and I will get it. Thanks!
subwrxkid
02-08-2006, 01:55 PM
Hey can you clear my jdm headlights please?? lol
TROLL
02-08-2006, 02:14 PM
i'll be happy to HELP everyone :) but expect to do a good amount of your own work on your lights.
yes, get one tube of silicone sealant in either black or clear for your headlights... there should be enough in one tube for 2 sets of lights so if you want to work out 'sharing' go ahead, haha.
the bulbs that come stock are clear, and if you dont do anything but remove the amber cover then they will look clear in the light, which looks good. however they will also blink clear which is a little confusing and a little illegal.
so... you can go to pep boys and either buy amber bulbs for about $4 and spraypaint them lightly with silver, or you can go to pep boys and buy the silverstar bulbs for about $18 and they will already look silver but blink amber.
TehWagon
02-08-2006, 02:22 PM
I plan on doing my own work, with some guidance! Unless that was towards subwrxkid, but I think he was kidding (don't the jdm lights come cleared?)
anyhoo, ok - depending on what pep boys/advanced has in stock i will decide and make sure i have the lights before sunday, as well as a tube of sealant.
did we say a time yet? also, troll can you pm me directions please, i have no clue where you live. thanks!
TROLL
02-08-2006, 02:46 PM
yeah it was directed towards subwrxkid... but yeah i forgot he has jdms.
ash is it just you and me? i have a feeling even if it is we'll have a half dozen others stop by anyways, they tend to do that.
how about Feb 12th at 2pm? might be up pretty late the night before so i'm planning accordingly ;)
how late can you hang till? we'll need time to heat em up and pull em apart, then reseal, let that set some and then reseal again and let that set some before putting back in. it'll be an after dinner completion if we go with this schedule. i'm flexible if that doesnt work for you.
sisforsurfing
02-08-2006, 02:50 PM
I really want to come over and do this. I have to work out the timing since I have something else scheduled for 2, but I might be able to work around that.
Whenever you plan on doing it I'll try and make it over, I haven't driven my car since early January ('cause of school) so this will be a nice treat for it, haha.
TROLL
02-08-2006, 02:51 PM
can you come later? if so thats no problem. we can only bake one headlight at a time anyways.
TehWagon
02-08-2006, 02:53 PM
Sounds good to me. AFAIK, chris (sisforsurfing) is still in...
That time works. I couldnt be there till ilke 10 or anything, but dinnertime-ish sounds about right.
Sounds like we'll have a lot of setting/waiting time in between. Do you have other tinkering on your car I could help with while we're waiting? I always have stuff I can do too... (Hey maybe I'll bring my seat and bracket and we can work on that  )
*Edit* guess i was typing for a while... some of this sounds silly now, but whatever- i'm leaving it as it is!

Hey Justin I painted mine, it really isn't very hard, basic spray paint is fine.
What do you guys mean by "clearing" the headlights?
TROLL
02-09-2006, 05:11 AM
this is how the stock headlights look:
http://www.tristatetuners.com/forum/vbgarage.php?do=getimage&id=803
http://www.tristatetuners.com/forum/vbgarage.php?do=getimage&id=801
this is how cleared headlights look:
http://www.tristatetuners.com/forum/vbgarage.php?do=getimage&id=25
you heat them up to open the light up and remove the amber cover over the blinker, then reseal the headlight. another variation is painting some of the inner housing black or modifying the blinker section in the 'koji' style.
07BlackSS
02-09-2006, 06:37 AM
OK that makes a little more sense. My headlights don't have them...I just painted them black...leaves a nice new scent in the house for everyone after your done...

i recommend high-heat engine block paint. Your headlights can get pretty warm, and overtime, you dont want the crappy spraypaint to begin to flake or peal, after everything is sealed up. I planned on doing this to my 5th gen accord to simulate the Sir headlights. I did alot of research on this and decided it wasnt worth the risk of melting my stock headlights, then not being able to drive until i orderd new ones....
So, i decided to jsut buy sir headlights.... (as you can see in my sig)
I did this process to my corners....they turned out ok, but it was tricky getting to the point where the silicone melts, and the headlights dont. lol
any more questions i'll try to respond, i read that a few of you have already done this, so i'm sure you will be able to keep everyone else in line.
Sincerely,
noob.

TROLL
02-10-2006, 05:35 PM
yeah anyone who wants to come is welcome. the oven only fits one light at a time so we'll hae to make sure we dont slack off too much if we're going to get a bunch of lights done. if anyone wants to come earlier than 2 then i'm cool with getting started around noon... really show up whenever but realize that there might be a lot going on and the process takes a couple hours start to finish, and you definitely cant drive home in the dark without your headlights, so factor that in.
i'll update the list now and PM directions out to everyone on it. post up if you want to come but arent on the list and/or didnt get directions.
