A stupid question but I really don't know anything about blacking out tail lights, I've never had it done but i'm looking at an Evo which I might buy and it has blacked out evo 7 tails, i love how the evo 7 tail lights look stock, especially on a white evo and I was wondering if its possible to return them back to normal or are they blacked out for life? Not sure if there's just a film covering it or what.

They are usually tinted with a spray-on tint. You may be able to get away with some light wet sanding to bring them back to original condition.

You don't need to wet sand them. Just get some detailing lacquer and it should come right off with some rubbing.

That ish is way too much work, haha. I've done that before.

No one (IMO) would black out evo 7 tails when they are as popular as they are. I'd be curious to see if they are just 8 tails with spray on black instead of the red 7 tails. If i was in your position i'd sell the black tails and just get yourself a legit set of 7 tails. Nothing looks better then the original.

thats what i was thinking, just selling them, but if i can just unblacken them then why not. I love the evo vii tail lights

If they are flat, use a palm sander with 2000 grit. Once it is all off, polish the plastic nice, then clear, and polish again. Good as new.

makes sense, but like i said i can't see somebody in there rite mind blacking out legit VII tails considering the demand for them at times. You could easily pick up a set of VIII's for around 100 and black those out if your going to go that route.
You have a picture of the exact lights your talking about by chance? I'd like to see them.

You sure they weren't tinted? I know of a lot of Evo guys who had their tails tinted from the inside. The seller does not know what method they used to tint the tail lights?

NO!!!!!!! do not use any kind of thinner to do this. They will fog up your lights and possabley pitt them. you have to wet sand and buff them to get it out. And if its tinted on the inside you might want to look at new lenses.

Wasn't looking to blackout lights, I don't like that look. I asked to get rid of it.

Buy the RED scuff pad from pep boys, a can or two of VHT NiteShades, and a can of clear coat. Clean lights, scuff up really good, clean again, add even coats of NiteShade until its as dark as you want (I usually use 3-4 coats), then hit with clear coats (2-4) and let dry. Then if you want better looks give it a nice wax after its all done drying.

Heres pics of my Z28 and Eclipse that I did myself.
