well i guess thats a bit newer i was talking like 73 and back lol i mean til 1980 the styles were tolerable but i think most of the makers did bad after 73... just my opinion my uncle has a 89 trans am and i love it ...just not as much as the older cars

i like the new school more but if given the opportunity to drive an old muscle car then im down with that. my collects and sells these cars all the time. right now he has a '69 LeMans blue Chevelle convertible and a '70 Chevelle in red with black stripes. Both are all original with low miles and matching numbers and both are SS396 cars. i drive the '70 sometimes. He has an'09 Challenger Classic R/T in B5 Blue too. The'69 is a keeper for a long time

Going back to when i was younger, he had a '69 Camaro pro street car. ran in the 10's. We had a '63 Nova pro street car too that ran 10:50 once. We've had a '69 Camaro Pace Car, a '68 Chevelle in gold. All of these cars were original with matching numbers

kinda sounds like my dad too...when i was younger, he had the camaro (the current one in my pic above), plus a 68 chevelle ss convertible, 396/325 hp, 4 speed, bench seat (buick interior from the factory, a rare combo), maroon with white nose stripe. he also had a 64 vette coupe, 327/365 hp, 4 speed, red on black, all original unrestored....learned to drive stick in that car

We have had it since 2007 I want to say in the winter time. Had the chassis redone and other things as well by Larry King Race Cars. Guy is very particular on his work but takes awhile at times. After that being in the shop for probably 10 months, got it back, and have only had about 15-20 passes on the thing total. ZZ572 crate motor on alcohol with a 1050 Carb on it. Best pass to date was at Cecil, 8.76, and at Maple 8.86. Just got converter tightened because my dad said it was launching too soft.

Here's another one of my dad's toys.

HickRocket1258

The chassis work in the beginning was done pretty well. Big problem was the guy was 5'7 or so, and well shortest one out of my dad, brother and I is 6'1, so we had to get our guy to lower the floor and move back the seat some. Relocation of the fuel cell as well and a few other ods and ends. We are going to be at the Pinks All Out with his and possibly my camaro.

this coming from the guy with the baby blue mustang, has the girlfriend let you drive it yet? ouch..

but in all seriousness, it's not a comfort thing.. it's a gas situation thing. at highway speeds with that gearing, it just chews through gas.. the revs are stupid high in 4th when just cruising. gas prices are too ridiculous to be making cruises to sonic in that thing. that's what i have the sti for.. and that's what i'll be bringing to the next sonic meet.. ha.

i cruise it around when the weather is agreeable, i just avoid prolonged highway trips with it.. that's all. i'd rather cruise around town and back roads.. therefore, if you guys want to meet up a little more local, i am down to get a sweet muscle car meet going. something like exton, KOP, west chester or do up another ridley creek park meet.

i guess reading comprehension isn't your strongest point.. i said i avoid long highway rides in it, that's all. morgantown sonic = long highway ride. i drive it through delco whenever i get the free time to do so. went for a gloomy cruise yesterday around town for a couple hours before it started raining so, i still don't see where i ever stated i don't drive the car. i just keep it to the local meets/car shows, i consider that common sense more than anything. if you'd like to paypal me some money for gas and the bottles of lead additive, i'll give you my paypal address.

Doug, I'm with you. My camaro with the 383...oops, I mean 350 hahaha, has 3.90 gears and that thing would be hanging up there in the rpms and I'd be worried about highway. No power steering as well.

doug
03-30-2010, 11:44 PM
well overheating certainly is an issue, it's more of that it's an unrestored original numbers matching block. and even though the car runs great and is symptom free, father time does has an effect even on the mighty DZ302 :) again, id rather just get in my sti for any extended highway trips to meets or shows.. some may call that a 'disservice' towards my camaro  but i consider it common sense and a responsibility to be taking care of a piece of an era of significant automobile history in the u.s. i hope that answers your question.

Also, driving an uncomfortable car thousands of miles really isn't a make or break in being a car enthusiast. Some people prefer to take their cars out on a Sunday drive around town. Different strokes for different folks. You need to accept that some people have different preferences, and those preferences don't make a difference as to whether or not they're an enthusiast.

thank you. at least someone has some sensibility. i grew up in the car, and its personal value and specialness of it goes beyond its heritage or history. sentimental value is greater than anything. i plan on giving it to my son one day, in just as original condition with ~60,000 miles on it :) and yes.. contrary to popular belief, i may be a moderator.. but i am just like you.

My dad bought his Charger brand new in 1968. He drove it for a while, and then put it away up until I bugged him to get it going, and he's been working on it ever since (about 2002-2003). I think he took it out exactly once without me with him, on a rainy day, and basically got no where anyhow. It's not original anymore, but he has modified it such that you could put it back to stock (although with a little bit of welding - need to source a patch panel). The original motor is still sitting in my grandmother's barn. Original wheels in the garage, etc.

Needs a pretty extensive refreshing, but it's actually pretty solid for having spent just short of 42 years on the east coast.

Oh - it's got ~55,000 original miles :)

haha dpan youre always there to put that smile back on my face.

and rturbo.. good story. does he plan on restoring it?Yeah, eventually. It will probably stay modified, and continue to be over the years, but I think he plans to get the rust fixed, and get it painted the original Triple Black at some point. The chrome time pieces need some work, the front bumper is dented, gas cap doesn't latch very well anymore... kinda needs a new trunk floor - no holes, but it's pitted. Don't know what the floor pans are like... there's more, and it all will need to be tended to, and given the cost of all that, it will probably be a while.

Here's a pic of the car. Doesn't look much different now on the outside, engine bay however just got touched up a bit - He's wrapping that project up now.

oh wow beuatiful piece of mopar there....i can deff understand why guys dont wanna drive the cars with low miles on it......see lol this is why i bought an average run of the mill muscle car with a non original engine in it , because i wanna drive it on long trips an enjoy going everywhere with it ....its just my opinion if u want a muscle car that you want to drive everyday , go buy a non matching numbers average car that you build and drive the heck out of it...that way you still have the piece of history , and you can take it on the highway for long trips and just run the heck out of it, just my opinion , not disagreeing with the other guys, i wouldnt drive it that much either with the low miles and the sentimental value it has to u. sweet cars tho none the less , i think we can agree on that, old cars have some character to them

Yeah Doug I would definitely be down. I also have a Turbo 350 in my camaro along with the 3.90s. And I only have one electric fan as well to help cool the stock radiator, so it doesn't do the greatest job at cooling down.

oh wow beuatiful piece of mopar there....i can deff understand why guys dont wanna drive the cars with low miles on it......see lol this is why i bought an average run of the mill muscle car with a non original engine in it , because i wanna drive it on long trips an enjoy going everywhere with it ....its just my opinion if u want a muscle car that you want to drive everyday , go buy a non matching numbers average car that you build and drive the heck out of it...that way you still have the piece of history , and you can take it on the highway for long trips and just run the heck out of it, just my opinion , not disagreeing with the other guys, i wouldnt drive it that much either with the low miles and the sentimental value it has to u. sweet cars tho none the less , i think we can agree on that, old cars have some character to them

haha.. yeah, i'd love to have something to kick the crap out of at the track and put unlimited miles on it. but i guess some people in this thread (not you) forget that i have an sti to enjoy. if i go a day without being able to drive my sti, it's upsetting haha. i plan in the future after i get settled into a house on picking up a project muscle car.. something unoriginal and not numbers matching.

Yeah Doug I would definitely be down. I also have a Turbo 350 in my camaro along with the 3.90s. And I only have one electric fan as well to help cool the stock radiator, so it doesn't do the greatest job at cooling down.

Oh my god Doug, you and I are pretty much thinking along the same lines with the whole house thing first, then start dumping your money into a project car hahaha.
