As an alternate to the whatever thread, have a separate Chat like TST chat that is java powered, and uses your login id and pw through TST to login.
I belong to a few sites who have them and it is much easier then refreshing the page over and over.

I second that, the forum for my 6 is like that
we've tried a chat in the past.. at least over a year ago.. iirc it took up too much bandwidth causing the rest of the site to lag.

The other forum im on had a chatbox that took alot of bandwith but then switched to MGC Chatbox Evo. The refresh rate can be changed from instant to every few seconds. I love it on my other forum but were all pretty much a faimly on there. It saves alot of server space by avoiding pointless "oops i broke this, how do i fix it" threads. If you ask the question in the chatbox its likley someone in there can help you.
The 6 forum also just bumped up their server space so that might also be how we can handle it.

Not really a chat box,but whole separate chat entity that loads a separate java application different from the forums to prevent them from lagging eachother.
im sure the admin guys on here will look into it.

why not add something like the facebook chat on here??
Refreshing the whatever thread increases ad impressions and (probably) revenue. We wouldn't want to do anything to disturb that would we?
