True story...
I was redoing the turbo setup on my car to get rid of a wacky volvo style turbo kit... I went out and got pretty much the same turbo just without a wastegate... .57AR if I remember correctly.
I decided not to cheap out on my car and I let the ebay turbo sit in the box and I got a brand new Turbonetics T3 .48AR turbo that was polished and beautiful. After a month of running it, my car started to smoke like I blew a piston ring... I swore up and down that it wasnt the turbo until one day I had the filter off and i had wall to wall shaft play. I tried to get turbonetics to exchange it, but they wouldnt. I was without the turbo for 4 weeks and I was given no compensation and I had to pay for shipping there. I got it back and had it on the car for 4 months then it blew again. This time turbonetics blamed it on my tune even tho it was the same problem.
In the mean time while the turbo was out for repair.. I ran the ebay turbo... after I recieved the turbonetics turbo back i sold it... to this day.. I am still running the ebay turbo with 0 problems and 0 shaft play.... its PERFECT...

hmm some ebay turbos are good i guess. on nasioc people always post complaints about them. especially the 16g's for subarus.

i think it also has to do how much you're boosting the cars and what car it is. i know on DSMs, our engines are really harsh on turbos so the "chinachargers" do not work for long. Then, on Hondas they are good because they are not being pushed too hard.

Im running one that I upgraded the internals myself. I added the 360 thrust bearing and gapless oil seal. 8,000 miles and lots of boost.... So far still perfect!

I know of someone who used the 16g on a civic, running 15psi and 300 horse but blew the turbo after a week of driving. I found t/3 imitation turbo that looks decent I might give it a try.

Friend of mine ran one for 2 years @ 10 psi on a KA-T setup and drifted the piss out of it. It was still making like 300whp till the day the motor went (oil starvation). Rebuilding now and its gonna be run again

My buddy has a chinese 16g on a dsm. He has no line going to the wastegate actuator and is simply running all the boost the turbo can possibly put out. He has 880cc injectors and boost spikes to 36ish and holds around 28 till redline. Turbo is still fine and its been about a year.

last yr my ebay turbo made 325whp on a very rich tune at 10psi...

I dont think its a question of them making power.... Its a question of reliability... Also its a question of them sending shards of metal down your intake pipe when the compressor shatters..
That being said.. mine is still ok... lol

A few things
Manifold
Downpipe
IC piping
ECU
Fuel
Tuning
More like a 4000-6000 investment in my case.

you're nuts lol theres no way the supporting mods for an ebay turbo would cost that much.

It's not about being an eBay turbo, it's about having the supporting mods for any kind of turbo upgrade but I won't get into that argument here, IM me.

4-6 grand for supporting mods? I'll just assume you're buying the best of the best.... heh

Not a lot out there for my car power wise, what exists ain't cheap. Injectors are 500ish, ECU is 2000, manifold and downpipe are 700, tune is god knows what, IC piping is another 200ish, then for the turbo, and I'd really feel better running a Garret at that point.

Hondas are a lot cheaper rich because there are so much aftermarket support.

Pretty much. You can make a Honda ECU tune-able for like 200 bucks from what I understand, my ECU availability is very limited which offsets the cost of the whole project, and it's only for the MSM, there are plenty of inexpensive tuning options for Miatas that come Naturally Aspirated. I'd run a cheapie turbo if it was a cheapie car, but considering that a used engine for my car is anywhere from 3000-7500, I wouldn't chance eating up the turbine on a cheap turbo, not to say it couldn't happen with a Garret, Turbonetics, etc. but the peace of mind would be there.

Im well aware.. I do have another car, and modding it is 5x more expensive then the honda. that being said.. I could easily spend 20 grand up upgrading turbos when I only have to spend 5.. I'm just saying that 5-6 grand seems to be highballing it... I'm sure you can throw a T series turbo on that car with supporting mods for less.. it would probably suck though lol..

Turbo upgrade with a GT series

Sure it can be done for less, but there's really not much out there in the way of off the shelf parts.

Really can't. ECU = $2000 no matter how you approach it.
Sucks. The BP for my car i can find for 750, then get your cams for another 3. I hate how a label ups the price so much.
I look for my MAF, it costs 350. Its the same in a kia, which i found for 15 on ebay.
Id rock a chinacharger for a while. Just to try it out.

Why cant you just piggyback the stock ECU? get a damn SAFC lol

SAFC is the most ghetto piece of tuning equipment you can buy. Rom tune or standalone only.

I tuned my vr4 on a SAFC2 and it made good power... Its not for all cars though....

Its good if your cars ecu was designed for a turbo motor... All it does is adjust fuel curve and thats it. If you need to adjust beyond that then it sucks... since your ecu is designed for a turbo motor.. I dont see why you cant piggy back... convert to obd1 and get a damn emanage blue lol
see you tonight.. i got a 90 piece sushi party tray for Lost haha

The SAFC adjusts the fuel curve because it modulates MAF voltage. The ECU is being fed BS numbers and therefore will adjust the timing accordingly. See the problem with this? Its a nice piece for monitoring, but it can blow cars up.
Lets say we throw off the reading of air 5-10%, that, depending on how the ECU reacts, could be no timing up to like 10 degrees of timing depending. The problem arises because you are making air and timing independent from fuel. They should work in concert for a true tune.

Yeah a lot of tuners do that... Maf translator, Maf pro, SAFC, SAFC 2, SAFC neo too.... Its not bad as long as you know how to properly tune it...

Yeah, but that's escencially two devices in a bunch of varients, Rich. I use MAF-T to supplement DSMLink, but I started out using SAFCII, VPC, and an EEpROM chip and hated every moment of it. Piggys are only ever going to be imitations of the real thing at best.

Completely agree... I looked at MAF translators just so I could relocated a GM MAF in front of my TB.. This way I could go blow through on the VR4 with a sick setup.. I wouldnt tune with it though.. I'll probably just go emanage blue in that car if i keep it.

Not to be rude or anything but I think the best budget car is a miata under 3k youve got 200 hp a mega squirt and pretty much taking on zo6's put in a little more it will last longer make it like 6 and you have 300 hp and then you get traction like every other car that does have launch or traction control a rolling start.
