Purchasing 1.8t GLI???

Hey guys, my friends looking at buying a 2004 1.8t Gli with 21k. Were both from the subie scene and dont know much about volkswagens, barely anything haha. Im asking you guys for your thoughts of them of how they perform an also about modding them?

Sounds pretty legit man. The mods are definitely done right. Do you know if the FK coils are Streetlines or Silverlines? Silverlines are better, street lines are like $500 new. The other mods are pretty proper bro. Car should be pretty quick. Make sure you see if any maintenance work like timing belt and water pump has been done. Got any pics of the car? should have a pretty nice stance.

Edit: 1.8ts are pretty quick once you chipped them like this car has been. You can't really do much more unless you want to go big turbo. But there are endless mods you can do to make the car sexy as hell.

i was always under the impression that the water pump and stuff needed to be done around 60k and to make sure its done somewhere in the 50k region with mods like that one does. If so, than that cars got some miles left before he needs to really worry about that. Also the mods do look pretty legit. Did the car get a good alignment after the drop? Also make sure all the basic maintenance that any car needs has been done (i.e. oil changes etc.).

Any modded or hard driven care should have service done a little early. You wouldn't pay me to touch a VW though. Onlything good about them is the owners seem to a close nit groups. But the cars are crap. My cousin is a VW mechanic and he wouldn't even buy on after working at Garnet VW for the past few years.

after owning two some seem to come from the factory more problematic than others so it seems like a gamble. But it has a lot to do with the way your treat your maintenance. If you keep up with the small stuff than you help deter the bigger problems. But yea my 94 poopstang didn't have the give me any headaches with 130k on it and my gti has less than 40 with no mods and babied and just broke. So VW's can become maintence whores.

lol I didn't see the 21k part, I just saw the 2004.

Also Vdubs can have a lot of problems, so I guess it takes dedication to drive one and love it like I do.

if you have the 150hp model than i'd say low 200's at best since a cia doesn't do much and the chip is good for 45-55hp according to GIAC and the fmic might add 10hp

GLI's come with 1.8t with 180hp k03s turbo and should be a 6 speed manual. My car has very similar setup and put down 205 at the wheels with just software, intake, and exhaust. GIAC software can be hit or miss, but you should be around that number with the included mods. There are other things you can do to get more power before going bigger turbo, but to get above 220whp average you will need to get a larger turbo.

At that low mileage the car should be really clean. You can check in the oil cap for sludge/dirty to see if the car has been maintained well. I would of course take the car for a test drive as well, that is how I best judge a vehicle.

To get around 250 wheel you would need a k04 or bigger turbo. If you wanted 250 crank you can do it with stock turbo.

every moddded dub ive seen for sale is usally pretty hacked up. get a stock one sold at a vw dealer with a warrenty and you should be good to go.
edit:not everyone, some really well built vr's ive seen, but only a select few.

I've never owned a mk3. I considered a mk3 Golf/GTI a while back but couldn't find one that was a non sunroof/power windows car.

Older ones are worse because of age getting to them. The newer cars nobody likes because not many people know how to properly fix them yet - that's how it works in the VW world.
