View Full Version : BMW 135I Vs Evo X

I'll be 24 in April and my insurance should go down pretty well. Around then I'll have been in my career for 2 years and I should have some good job security with that on my resume.

That being said I'm currently supporting two sports cars and a brand new bike. I'm tired of fixing crap on both cars. I want to get something new, clean, and with a warranty.

I love the 135I and the Evo X and I'm between the two. The 135I may pull faster, but it just doesnt handle as well. I love the style of both cars and they appeal to me.

Opinions?

I really hope not... I've always heard 24.

Anyhow... I'd like to add another point of view.

The cars are two completely different animals as you all know.

The evo X is nice, but for the money the 135I is better looking, classier, and I'm sure built better. It wouldnt be a bad route because I wouldnt want to mod and void a warranty. I feel like the X would just be more of the same... Dumping money into mods never satisfied, and always wanting more. The 135I would be satisfying, comfortable, sylish. I'd be happy just throwing some O.Z's on it and calling it a day.

until you hit the BMW forums and find out that 135is are into the 11s with minor mods...lol

it's really a toss up...both are great cars...luxury performance vs awd performance

Your insurance goes down at 25 not 24 at least in PA. Chances are the BMW will be cheaper to insure then the Evo X

Drove both cars in stock and modded form, it's like night and day. The 135 is a ultra-classy car that will always get a nice complements wherever you go. Bolt on mods get you into the 400s without any issues, but the negative is cost. Everything on these cars cost big $$$$ and might make you feel a bit guilty pushing it.

The Evo has a totally different powerband but like the 135 when modded gets into the 400s without any issues. Now the issue you have to deal with is the stigma of the "riceboy" the car carries with it. Due to it's price, a number of "kids" picked up these cars in the past and have started trouble due to cheap HP. Some ppl in law enforcement just have a bone to pick with Asian import cars due to their track record. On the flipside if you don't make yourself standout, the whole LE issue is a moot point.

If I had the means I would jump at the 135 and mod it into a refined 400ish car and enjoy it. Hell I would even go so far as to say wear a Brooks Bros suit with it and slick your hairback.

Now if I wanted to something to break records with and not have to worry about cost and parts being shipped over from Europe, the Evo is the way to go. My buddy had one of the fasted Evos on the east coast (Documented into the 8s) and he drove it everyday to work, yet it looked bone stock on the outside.

Your taste may vary but I would get an Evo to put up the wild numbers or the 135 to have a powerful yet classy turnpike rocket.

You said it best here^. I would absolutely agree with BMW for the high level of quality, and the maintenence program. The only downside I see to owning a 135i is the small interior. If you wait, they will probably re-design the nose soon with some sleeker-looking headlights. Would you consider the 2010 335i sedan? I want a white one of them soo bad.

135 is the easy Answer... I would trade my STi right now for a used 335 coupe with no questions asked.

135. evo X is only an evo in name. sure its fast but its not an evo. and why buy the name without the feel to go with it, just to have the boy ricer stigma. the sad part is they cost the same once you get an evo optioned near a 135.
and bmw offers free manteninece ect. i dont know if youve been in a mistu dealer ever but a bmw dealer is a much nicer place to kill an hour while your oil is being change for free.
get 135 and enjoy a 400whp sleeper

the way i see it is BMW=grown up, classy. where as the EVO=boy-racer, yet some class.

i personally would go for towards the evo cause at 25 i'd still want an evo. maybe look into a luxury DD like an infinity, lexus etc.

I would choose the 135I. I'm assuming that you're going to likely have this car for a while. As you get older, you may feel silly driving a "ricer boy car". A BMW conveys style and class. I would stick with that.

i would love an 135 .. but .. i would also like to be able to drive it in the winter with relative safety and i don't car how many people say " ohh but with snow tires and 4 tons of lead in the trunk they handle fine" .. no they dont .. awd is the only way i would go unless i had a beater for the winter or lived where there was no winter

For that price range, why not look into some of the Audi options? I have seen/sat in the 135. Eh, So damn small. But my fat ass also had a problem feeling comfortable in the EVO X seats as well. I think in the price range of both you could look at A5's and the TT's is you like the small car. Or maybe try to find an S4 or S5 a few years old off lease? Just a suggest.

Was just thinking that. Check into the audis since they fall pretty close your price range. The s5, s4 especially.

Also it's 25, that your auto insurance will go down. Trust me I know, 100%. It's the age group 16-24 thats most at risk.

DaveSTi
01-06-2010, 02:16 PM
Test drive both.

Find out insurance difference. At 24, the Evo will be more expensive to insure almost guaranteed.

Figure out what you'd like to do with the car. Everyone mentions the Evo's power potential, but the car will outhandle the 135i with ease.

Do you plan on DDing the car through the winter? The 135i won't be the best for that.

How important is the interior to you? The X's isn't shabby in MR form.

Will you own the car outside of warranty? Parts and maintenance will be cheaper on the Evo by a good margin.

Do you plan on modding at all? The BMW can run 11's with light work but it's not cheap plus like with the Mitsu, your warranty goes bye bye once you do. (Magnusson-Moss Act notwithstanding).

OR you've already made up your mind in which case sign the check.

I own an X right now at 24 and I'm going to the be making the switch to the 1er. Hands down its a great car, better looks, BMW fit and finish, awesome power and driveability. Only pitfall is the RWD and PA winters. Even though a good set of snows should help this some, I will still miss my AWD.

I looked at all the cars around $45,000 when looking for my next car last spring.

The Evo won my heart. With modifications any car can be made to be a performer. But I love the "wtf is that" factor that comes with the Evo. Everyone on here obviously knows what it is when spotted, but people still ask me every now and then "what is that?". A guy in a new M3 rolled up next to me in the Fall and was looking at my car up and down, then told me "sweet car man". I think a base model X looks pretty crappy, though. To me my car looks perfect, but it's far from done.

http://i488.photobucket.com/albums/rr247/Fujito89/CAR_0011.jpg?t=1262571873

But I'm 20. Big wings, racing seats, and tons of JDM aftermarket parts makes me happy. I don't know what makes you happy. Downside is the interior. I don't care about it, but the BMW is much better in that aspect, as well as paint quality probably.

I'm making the same decision. You insurance rate will depend on far too many factors beside just your age. 25 is the supposed 'magic' number, but I find mine went down after I built decent credit.

e90post.com and evoxforums.com/evolutionm.net are good resources. They have a ton of info to research. Both can be easily modified for nice power with some tweaks.

From what I have read they both have issues whether its multiple fuel pumps and turbo failure going on the BMW to recalls on the fuel pump relay (running lean)/paint issues on the X.

I am not sold on the reliability of either as I expect at least 100K from a car turbo or not so I am waiting for awhile.

CleanNeon98

I think when you put together everything, the 1 is just a more solid car. Sure the X may handle better but how much of your drive are you flying through wicked corners, furthermore even if you could, other traffic won't let you. Take into account for both cars

Price
Features
Insurance
MPG
Warranty
Fit and Finish
Power
Handling
Style
Comfort
Resale

You'll also never have to worry about police looking at you twice in a 135i, I never get looks in my car, it's just not suspicious, even low, loud, and tinted out.

I'd get the BMW but then again look at my user name lol. Like every one said they are much more comfy. The ride is much better. There is one thing nobody mentioned though, BMW's bulletproof warranty. You could mod it and they won't care. They will replace your brakes, 1st clutch, etc etc all on the house, try that with your Evo.

my insurance went down the day after my 24th birthday. the lady at state farm said thats how they do it, because technically i wasnt in the 16-24 age range anymore. but that may just be state farm.

I say Evo X for sure. u have the Ducati for ur impractical fun. The 135 is a great car but its quite small where as the Evo is a functional sedan with plenty of space. and as far as speed goes, bith cars have good mod potential. but the evo has more u can do for less money and its AWD so u can be all good in snow. BMW RWD....not so much.

if u find urself wanting a bimmer but feeling the 135 is too tiny or high on insurance. look at the 335xi sedan. or if ur feeling kinda different, get the 335D. 265hp and 405tq stock with far more with some relatively easy mods and 30mpgs....not bad at all.

but between those original 2, the evo hands down.

I'd go with the 135i. Still, I understand you're 23 years old and have enough to pay one of these off? Even if I were making money like that, I'd get a used car. No point in buying new. Especially in this economy. You only think your job is secure. You're young yet. Find a used 135i if you must have a late and great car and pay decent payments. Otherwise, buy new and be stuck with a nasty car payment for the next few years that will eventually start to piss you off. Someone in here said they're 20 and getting an Evo next spring. What do you do for work? I am 25, I must obviously be doing something wrong...

jnr5005

^Definitely advantages of buying new (trade your car in that day, dealership financing power, leave with a warranty, maintenence contract, and a spotless car). If he buys a $40k car and has $5k discount or trade, and covers the tax in cash, his payment would be a not-so-nasty $511 x84 months @ 5.99%. There is also a lease offer on the 135i: msrp $42k, $5k down, $409/month x36. All you need is credit and your John Hancock, and your driving a brand new BMW. All I am saying is there are ways for those who aren't making $40k+ a year to do it.

it's generally at age 25 it goes down, and with those cars your insurance will go up.
adding an audi a3 to our insurance policy almost doubled it.

i would check with your insurance on quotes as well as shopping around for new quotes at this moment. I remember the m3 for me to have in philly was way too much money

i agree with this guy -
Financial experts recommend spending no more 12 to 15% of your after-tax monthly income for car payments. To calculate how much car you can afford, multiply your monthly net pay (take-home pay after taxes are deducted) times 15% (.15). Your car payment should not exceed this general guideline.

back when i was a broke college student buying a new honda civic was a stupid mistake i learned from. I paid it off and drove it for three more years without payments and saved all the money working to do other stuff.

not bad- i think some people here have cars that consume about 70% of their income :bigeek:

don't forget looking at CPO cars with huge warranties.

my next car will probably be an audi a5 quattro once they come into the CPO lot. I might lease, but that takes the fun out of modding the car.

I beg to differ with everything u just said. Awd is worth it's weight in gold in bad weather (not only snow). Why should u be stuck where u are in bad weather? In the last big storm I was able to go out and have fun but at the same time help numerous people who were stuck get themselves out. My car is flawless in the snow and I know the same is true of the evo. U just need to know how to drive in snow and u won't have problems.

I couldnt agree more... I found a VERY nice MINT 08 135I with Idrive, black leather, pearl white paint... 20k something miles for 25k... I was almost ready to drive over and throw the VR for trade in.. It sucks that I have to pay off a bike now and finish the honda.. Unless I get a good offer for it as is lol

15% of my monthly take home after 401k, benefits, etc is 400 bucks a month.. it really shouldnt be a problem, but its insurance that I'm worried about. I dont know if full coverage is different on a new vs used car, but I was quoted like 400 a month for full coverage on the VR4.. its like gtfo..

I have full coverage on the Ducati and its cheap though... 80 a month and I got the bike and insurance before I even had a damn leaners permit for the thing lol

To what Fujito said about paint. Mitsu paint is thin but smooth. Bmw paint has flaws it seems. I saw a new M3 at Daniels in Allentown with serious orange peel. On a new M3. Wtf? Did a 10 year old paint it?

Fastest track time, yeah. Slowest 1/4 mile though. You can't launch it. The SST dual clutch transmission is awesome, but a very expensive fix. The MR is a lot more expensive to mod because you have to upgrade all the SST components, and if it breaks it's going to cost $8,000 to replace.

Really? That's unfortunate. I just usually think high end car brands generally apply more coats and chip resistant. The Evo's paint isn't as bad as my 07 Civic's was, but it still chips relatively easily.

The 135's are nice and quick, but every time I see one they just look so/too small... Up close they look great... on the road, they look tiny... It's weird, every time I see one on the road it's like they're shrinking. You ever look/sit in the back seat? There really isnt one. Plus, there's some guy that I see almost every morning driving to work on Broad St. that's debadged and replaced with an //M emblem (bleh). I would go for a used 335i or xi instead. That's got a bigger pimp factor, bigger, similar power, real back seats. That's a car I'd buy and keep for good.

have you been in either car?...the space in the back of the 335i is basically exactly the same as the 135i...it's close enough that I wouldn't call it a real back seat.

and as for them looking small, uh yeah...because they're supposed to be a smaller looking more performance oriented car while keeping the BMW quality about it, hence it being a 1 series and not 3 series

I'm gonna go look at an 06 330i that I've been eyeing for the last couple weeks today. I've set specific limits for monthly payments and such. I got them down to 20k and it's got 57k miles, however it's a CPO and has a 6year/100k bumper to bumper courtesy of BMW. If I can get it at a decent used car interest rate, and payments at or below $250/month, then it's a deal. I've got about $2500 worth of Focus parts I would sell off and put straight to the bimmer. Also the BMW would be $100 cheaper a year to insure than my Focus. I've got Nationwide and I'm two weeks short of 26 with a clean record.

The CPO warranty is NOT comparable to the include-all-warranty that a new BMW has.

A BMW out of warranty like that is not an easy sell.

Both cars are very nice and have alot of potential. I say don't worry about what everyone else thinks, get what makes YOU happy.

idk what it is, but the 135 just has this "cute" look to it that i just dont really like for a performance car. I mean yea its fast and nice and all, but i cant see it ever looking "badass" like many of the 335s do.

and the evo has more easy potential and mods cost like half what they do for the bimmer.

I would choose the evo over the 135,,, mainly cause the 135 looks like a girls car, its CUTE,,,, I dont care how fast it is or not,, its like driving a VW cabrio... but I would chose a 335 over an evo... 335 is grown up, classy, high class looks with the speed you need.. My buddy in Ne Philly has a 08 335 4dr for sale.. Its got staggered 19s, lowered, front lip, that dark gunmetal color, no dings, or dent, nothing wrong with his car, just getting married with a kid and just bought a house and wants a minivan now,, yes,, a 335 to a honda odyssey.. I think his car got only 13k on it and he wants $36,995 only,, his car is loaded, hid, leather, roof, navi, etc.... He's located in NE Philly.

 why?

i could have bought a 135i with ease, but bought the Evo because its a better performance car and easier/cheaper to modify. Plus, it looks a lot more badass.

Not to mention the cost of maintenance on the BMW outside of its great warranty is ridiculous.

I'm almost to the point in modding where I could have bought a new M3

I don't regret buying the X one bit.

exactly, and good luck keeping that warranty with any mods at all.

I would go with the Evo. Maybe it's because i'm younger but the Evo just has more appeal over the 1 series, especially with the AWD system. I wouldn't want to try to get through a snowstorm without my AWD.

Best of both worlds. BMW 335xi. u get the BMW 3.0TT, and u get ur awd.

and the handling sucks in comparison.

so does the awd system.

seriously, the BMW does not have the overall performance of the Evo. It's not even a real comparison to make if you want the most bang for your buck.

does the bmw have a nicer interior? hell yeah.

does the bmw have a nice engine? hell yeah.

can the bmw get through snow as well as the evo? hell no.

can the bmw be modifed cheaply? hell no.

can the bmw outhandle the evo around a track without suspension work? hell no.

if you want to buy based on a badge, buy the bmw.

if you want to buy based on what the car actually can do, buy the evo.

Good points, but that isnt what I was getting at. I was saying the 335xi is the best compromise between the 2 if he couldnt decide.

Its not as good in snow as the evo, but its far better than the 135. and it can be had with 4 doors like an evo, instead of the 2 ur stuck with on the 135. and u still get that bmw 3.0TT and interior etc.

If u read back in the beginning I told rich to go for the evo. I love bimmers but the costs are just too high. My friend spent more on his M3's axleback than I did on my entire exhaust. I gain like ~50hp and he gained like 5hp for around the same money.

If it were me Id deff get the evo, even though a 335 is tempting. But rich may want something a bit nicer and more grown up.... he does have a Ducati for straight up fun lol.
