So the wagon is dead, and since I had planned on upgrading the car anyway, this is just forcing my hand a little sooner.
So, to all you fine people of TST.... what are your thoughts on MK5 Jettas? I have found a couple of 2.5l I-5s for reasonable prices.
Now, I know the base "S" is missing a lot of the bells and whistles, but I am cool with that.
So, what say you?

A friend of mine had an 06 for about a year or so. For what it was, it wasn't a bad car to drive but the 5 cylinder is a tractor motor essentially. After about 4k it just dies pretty much. They don't get all of that great mileage from what I understand either. For a daily driver, I don't think it would be a half bad car..

Yea, this is gonna be a car to get me around point a to point b. I don't race, autocross, drift, drag, or w/e, so thats fine.

It should be a fine appliance then. I have heard from numerous people and reviews that people get anywhere from 17-27 mpg with the 5 cylinder..

Its a nice car. The interior is pretty good compared to some of its competitors and it comes with pretty good features standard. Motor wise i dont think you will have a problem because its the 2.5 i-5 and you said your not goin to mod it. One good thing i noticed about vw is that they use pretty good paint on their cars (idk mine doesnt have any orange peel yet unlike my old civic). Vw dealership service is pretty goood compared to the hondas and nissan dealerships i been to(only two brands i owned).

Where I am in RI, we have an AWESOME VW dealership (also a sponser of the VW group I hang out with).
There would be SOME mods to the car, but only stuff like wheels (OEM VW wheels most likely), and MAYBE a slight drop, but that would be MUCH later down the road.
But, good things to hear so far.

Paint doesn't develop orange peel, it either has it from the factory or it doesn't. Orange peel forms from the clear coat being applied quickly and the car not being wet sanded after words. What your paint can develop is oxidation, swirls, marring and scratches. VW does have very hard paint, which is good and better than most factory paints as it is more resistant to scratches and such.
As far as buying a VW, I work for them and I handle all the service writeups and warranty claims that come through the shop. The only VW I'd ever buy, and is still a stretch, is a CC. In the same sense, it's all about the maintenance as well, if you keep on top of it (as with any car) they will be good to you. However, VW are significantly more expensive to own, and when something does go wrong you will find very few shops able to work on them. So get used to the dealership :-p

its getting harder to find lower milage mk4s.
Plus, if I got a mk4, it would pretty much need to be a TDI, or 24v.
I know, I am picky as hell.
