so....i have a chance to pick up a 2006 Volvo S60 R awd for a relatively good price considering these things were over 45K brand new. im looking for a new daily driver and this 300hp awd sedan might fit the bill. im not familier with Volvos at all so i have no idea about issues or anything of that sort. i know they are expensive to mod and all that but im not lookin for this to turn into another project...this will stay strictly a daily if i go through with it. so, what do you know...what should i look for?? thanx
this isnt the actual car but its looks similer...just a differant color.

I was in a similar position a little while ago when looking for a new DD and had the S60r on the list of potentials. I eventually decided against it due to concerns about lack of reliability. If I remember correctly there were a lot of complaints about the transmission and statements that the car was in the shop as much as it was out. Sharp looking car though.

i'd love to have one for a DD. how much are they asking?
If its from a dealership just purchase some additional warranty if you're concerned. Anything mechanical that relies on very specific clearances and tolerances are going to be subject to potential failure. thats the life of an internal combustion engine.
I'm sure there were many more of these built that haven't had a single problem than those that did.

Most of the people Ive heard of having problems where modifying the car. If u dont kick the **** out of it all the time, i think it'll be fine.

As I read, it was mostly on the older R models that really have the quirky transmission and is pretty common after adding more HP. If you plan on leaving it stock for the most part and keep up on preventive type maintenance you should be good. Awesome vehicle. I childhood friend's father went through two R's, maybe 3 now? He always praised it, but the sweed's are a little quirky too!

I say go for it. I never knew these existed until I saw one and talked with teh owner in Exton one night. Was really impressed with the style and interior.
You can tune it to run more boost and AWD of course.
I was told the xfer cases are problematic, but all cars have their quirks and I'm not even sure all years had that problem.

I'm the volvo expert on this forum, please pm me with any specific questions you may have.
They are pretty easy to work on, some common things that go on this car are the control arm bushings, stabilizer links, and spring seats. If you are looking at an auto then torque is restricted to 250 for 1st and 2nd gear. If you are looking at a stick then its 300. If you are willing to drive up to NNJ and the seller is willing I could put it on a lift and check it out for you as well as plug it into my VIDA and read all the codes if any.

I think the seats in the S60R are some of the most comfortable and supportive car seats I've ever sat in.
Do it.

As long as you dont plan on doing anything to the engine you should be fine. Volvos are ment to be modded and are very reliable when left alone and regular maintenance is done.

I forgot to mention there will be issue's if you use after market parts. Volvo's do not like them. Also do not take it to an Indy shop unless they are specialists in Volvo's AKA they have VIDA and know what they are doing. I have so many shops calling in asking for help.

$22.5 with 17k miles on it...06.

There is a fairly strong aftermarket - now it is expensive and we are not talking a JDM size aftermarket, but its pretty strong.
Weak point is the angle gear and slave cylinder (slave is not applicable in an auto or GT).
MpowerKai is right on the control arm bushings, spring seats, and endlinks. That said, an 06 is NOT torque limited to that amount, those are 04 numbers.
I have an 02 T5 (the model below an R) but right now it is faster than a stock R (just lacking AWD). The only big failure item I had (in 120k miles) was the slave cylinder, and that was at 105k miles (the clutch at that point still had a LOT of life left, but had to be replaced due to fluid on it). Fairly heavily modded with 0 issues.
I absolutely LOVE my car and there is a strong chance I will stick with Volvo depending on where they end up at a corporate level (if it is China, I am gone).
Both Keystones are excellent dealers for checking the car out initially, but there are a few strong indys around here as well. Keystone Berwyn has people driving from all over the Northeast to get their car serviced there (literally).
All in all, its an awesome car - if its an 04 or you start to mod it (or beat it too bad - there are a few with over 400 to the wheels that has had ZERO issues) you could run into issues, but generally they are great vehicles.

so.....
i passed on the Volvo and instead stayed true to my roots...lol...big engine, RWD. just brought this beauty home last nite and i couldnt be happier. for those that dont know, this is a 2009 G8 GT. it has a 6.0l and 6 speed auto tranny. 355hp and 385tq...it moves quite well. with GM's 0% financing and $1500 cash back offer it was a no brainer for me and i think ill be very happy cruising around in this thing. enjoy

agreed! but it may make a comeback as a Chevy later on down the line. i think it was GM's only RWD 4 door sport sedan and now they have nothing. they'll need to come up with something.

Well the R uses HID's so they don't go as much however in rare instances I've heard that under fast driving (highway type speed) and heavy rain water will get into the headlight and short out the ballast and you will need to replace the whole headlight
