Let me first off say I know it depends on what Manufacture made your Ballast and Bulbs and in what combination, and if you take pictures different cameras will process the picture differently.
I don't know if I made a mistake buying my new HID bulbs. I had 6000k which looked nothing like 6000k to me. They were closer to 4300k. Thats fine and all but a little too bright and too white. So I purchased 8000k this time. Now I am wondering if this was a mistake. Some peoples come out reallllly blue while other have to perfect look that I wanted, I just want to color to be blueish. My Prelude had the perfect color with 8000k.
And they can't be returned so it doesn't really matter at this point but I just wanted some input and maybe personal experience.
8k is always way to much. I've had a McCulloch 6k kit for a few years now. To me they were perfect. They had a slight purple light but not so much that is annoying or screws up my inability to see. I recently bought replacement lights since I thought one burnt out (ended up a wire pulled out of my harness) Bought the same company, still 6k, and even from the same guy on ebay that I've always bought replacements from. These have no purple tint to them at all. As a matter of fact they look just white. I think they look so much better that way. They always say from bulb to bulb there may be a little difference but as much as the color being very noticeably different is ridiculous. Oh well I'm happy with the new look.

The projector they are in also plays a big part of it. Depending on the make they can produce different colors/ flicker

mmmk but does anyone have any experience with 8000k because I am stuck with them now. And what do you mean too much? Are you referring to appearance? Because performance-wise they are lower than 6000k.

Pretty sure it plays no part in it. Sounds like he has regular housings. And in my case it's the same manufacturer same rating. Nothing changed.

They are to much, as in they are to ricerish. And yes performance wise they put out less light then 6k's. So really you'd probably see better with stock bulbs in.
I'm missing what you're getting at. You're saying your stuck with them and can't return them. What experience are you looking for with someone who has 8k? If you're stuck when them they gotta go in so what info are you looking for?

Just if anyone else has had 8000k, to see trulely what color they are. You can't get a clear understanding from a picture online. I've seen super mixed pictures from Blue, to blueish, to sky blue.
I am hoping they end up washed out sky blue if anything

The one in my avitar is 6k but like you said that does it no justice. There was a slight purple tint to it. My friends 8k's were purpleish blueish. Another one of my friends 10k's were blue and looked dim as hell. Pretty much to understand what you have you'd have to personally look at someones lights.

OMGz Turbo, I am hoping mine will wash out a little. My ballasts give off more light than my friends (different brand)and give me a whiter but still blueish look. I just don't want blue blue (ex washed out look of 10000k, thats too blue).

I think it all depends i ran 8k's in the SRT and they produced a very bright "white" light. But definitely had a shade of blue when on, i liked them personally

8000K will look riced out, IMO. They are just TOO blue, to the point of being obnoxious. It's like getting a bulky body kit, but in HID form. Just plain old overkill.
I've always had 6000K, which I think is perfect. To my eyeballs, they produce a nice 'diamond' effect -- depending on what angle you're viewing the headlights from, they'll appear as either clean white, pale blue, or pale purple.

you also have 55w. People say to get the same color with a 55w as a 35w you need to go up one temperature. so your 5000k are more like 4300k color.

I don't know how your car is but my stock lights take 55w bulbs. I'd imagine yours would be the same. I wouldn't see the point in downgrading.

Your stock Halogen bulbs take 55watt, but when you switch over to HID, the most common are 35watt. 55watt produce a lot more heat so not all housings and wiring can handle them.

Hid's burn cooler then Halogens. If your cars stock headlights are only wired for 35 watts then when you run a 55 watt hid system you will need to convert the wiring to be able to handle it. It's not burning the wires because the bulb is so hot.

I am starting to think I should not be taking advice from Supraru. You are either not understanding what we are saying or don't understand how HIDs work. No offense. But I do appreciate your help.

I get what you're saying. But the facts dude is giving out is wrong. Most cars do function on 55 watt systems. Hence why I said who runs 35watters. Even my stock fogs were 55w. Hid's also do not melt housings. Buy a shady kit maybe. But like I said you run a certain wattage kit you have to have the proper wiring. That is how hid's get bad names. I've been in this game far longer then you've been able to drive. I believe I know a thing or two about cars and wiring.
AutobahnRacer
11-01-2009, 07:12 PM
55W HID kit is not recommended with cars designed to have halogen lights. The wiring is just not rated to handle the amperage built-up require to fire the ballast. Also the headlight housing may not be able to handle the additional heat generated by the extra wattage of 55W HIDs. These are our findings from 2 years ago. The 2008 and newer lineup may be different now but on the older ones will definitely cause problems.
russiankid
11-01-2009, 10:06 PM
A 55watt system draws more current than a 35watt system, that is correct. However, why do 55watt systems put out more light? They draw more power thus more heat is created. Every felt how hot housings get?

i have 6000k stock i believe, its very white down low, but the edges of the cutoff have a blue/purple tint so if i come over a hill you will see the purple/blue flicker and then it basically goes all white.
there is a subtle tint of blue throughout though...
i'm thinking about going 8k...i've seen some pictures and they dont look too much different.
TROLL
11-02-2009, 12:03 AM
I have never heard of a factory HID system being anything other than 4300K which is the whitest available. Its the optics of your lens that create the diffraction in the light which makes for the blue/purple you catch every now and again. The bulb is putting off pure white light though.
8000K is rice, sorry.
I would never go over 6000K on a car, its just cheap and ricey looking otherwise. The 6000K is mostly white but has plenty of blue tint in it.
And you can buy replacement bulbs at ddmtuning.com for $25 a pair if you don't like what you have...
russiankid
11-02-2009, 12:08 AM
You use DDMTuning, Troll? I've had their 55watt 5000k kit in for over a year now without any problems.

I think your bulb mistake was putting HID in a non HID housing. The prelude is known for having a horrible light scatter with HIDs when not properly retrofitted. Please do everyone else a favor and put the proper bulbs in.
AutobahnRacer
11-02-2009, 12:18 PM
There are cars that have HIDs in reflection houses (ex 04 STi), of course they are designed to do so but they are just fine. Mine do not scatter too bad at all, there is some but not much, and actually has a decent, cut off.
Anyway I don't want this thread to become and argument. I will post a pic maybe Thursday.
