Well as some of you guys might know,my integra was stolen from my college's parking lot on thursday night. First car stolen from there in 25 years as i was told by the campus police.

Im now in the market for another car,im going to have a spending limit of about 5k so im looking for your opinions on what you guys think is worth the buy. Here is a list of criteria to narrow it down

Criteria

Prefer RWD/AWD
Not a honda
Import prefer
Turbo would be a plus
Not convertable

I have picked out a few cars by searching around the internet, have not really searched into pricing but i have an uncle who is a police officer and is going to look at the local police auctions for me. This is just an idea of what id like if the price is right

Cars
Eagle Talon TSI AWD
Plymouth Laser RS Turbo AWD
Mitsubishi Galant VR-4
1991-94 Nissan 240sx (non vert)
1995-1998 Nissan 240sx
1989-91 Mazda FC RX-7 Turbo II
1992-1995 Mazda RX-7

So tell me what you guys think :cyberguy:

DSMs are touchy, and can definately be had for that price, but be wary of any of them that you go to check out. Ask when the water pump and timing belt were done last, ask if it still has balance shafts, and if they just shrug at you, walk away as these are the most commonly failing items when dealing with these cars. If you can cop a realitively stock one, do it, they're a ton of fun, easy to work on and make power with, and realitively reliable if you stay up on the maintence. As for the FCs, I can't really comment on them too much, but I've had friends that hated the TII's as DDs.

1JZ supras = win.
theres some very decent N/A 300ZXs out there for under 5k
240s, obviously
2.5rs.

If it were me id go for the 300ZX or the supra.

Or if ur a real driving enthusiast and just want to have a blast. buy a miata and just have a ball.

Mustangs are also a good possibility as are camaros.

u have alot of options.

Look in the Cars for sale section, Im helping my friend out who had his car stolen too, theres some VERY decent cars in ur range in that section.

I didnt include a miata because i didnt want to trade in my balls just yet...no but really the whole 2 seater thing is iffy.
And thanks for the information Insulin i never would have known that.

I dont know much about supras thats why i asked,1jz's are which body style? the boxy ones?

Foolinaround
10-25-2009, 04:04 PM

im going to do a little more research into miatas too. but just as a backup. I mean the prices are these auctions are retardedly cheap

95-98 240sx may be hard to find for under $5k, and I don't think the 92-95 rx7 will fall into your range either.

you could look into an SC300 or 400 (im biased :))

I know it's out in left field from your choices but 94-95 mustang GT's can be found for under 5K

Foolinaround
10-25-2009, 04:49 PM

i know this may sound stupid, but get a legacy wagon or outback wagon.

they both came with the same 2.5L engine out of the 00-01 Impreza 2.5RS.

that, and you got room in the back to through **** in.

and i doubt anyone would want to steal that.

and, you know most owners of them didn't beat on it

1991-1995 MR2 turbo. BONE STOCK.... lol... reliable, 225whp out of the box (more depending on what gen motor you get), easy to work on, rwd AND mid engine, suspension and handling still competes with newer cars these days...

I added them to my original paper list but for the life of me i can not find one.

Took me over 3 years to find one to my liking... you can see where that put me though. Why? because it was pre modded.

join up on MR2oc.com if you have to... there are a lot for sale on there... you'll probably just have to travel to go see them

I really don't post here very often, but since you asked...

...a 1991-93 Volvo 240 series fits your price range & criteria to the T. OK, its not a hot hatch from the land of the rising sun...but if you're resourceful, they can be turned into agile turbocharged terrors for relatively little coin. The 2.3ltr SOHC "Red Block" is probably the stoutest engine in the world. A bolt-on "+T" mod can easily yield 200+hp with no internal alterations(300+ is reachable w/ extensive mods). They're also inexpensive to insure and tend to not draw unwanted attention from thieves or local law enforcement. Once you get past the boxyness, you'll discover a unique vehicle with a lot of history and potential.

So tell me what you guys think

I think I just did.

240's are probably your best bet. It;s a shame I just traded my uuber clean 95 S14 and I was only looking to get $3500 for it with 90k original miles. However, for 5g's (or maybe like 6 or 7 if you can save up the coin) you can have a clean, swapped/boosted 240 with rwd and lots of fun!

if you're iffy on 2 seaters you shouldn't be looking at rx7's.

I wouldn't buy a dsm for 5k, there is no way you're buying a running fd for under 5k, and you're going to have a lot of fixing if you buy a turbo fc for under 5k.

Ah the Volvo 240, so easy to work on if they break too. I'm a volvo mechanic. Takes me 10 minutes to replace a radiator on this car and about an hour or so to replace the headgasket. I prefer the 740 to the 240 myself. If you go with the 240 look underneath the car, if its all rusted then forget about it because they have rusting problems.
