lately ive been hearing alot about people going catless. would there be any benefits for me to go catless in the spec-v?im guessing all i need to do is buy a new exhaust system that doesnt have a cat on it? not too familiar with how that all works, so any advie helps alot!

Sure it would help... but you won't gain much until you put a header on there.
You will also want to pick up an O2 sim.

o2 sim?

Yes, it tricks the ecu into thinking that you have a cat. Its not a must... if you don't mind seeing a SES light, then I wouldn't worry about it.

you should get a header stat. it replaces the first cat so you will need an o2 sim. there is a problem with the primary cat breaking up and the particles getting sucked into the cylinders and scoring up the cylinder walls. there was a recall for a bunch of specs that had their header/cat replaced but some still expierienced the same problem with the new updated cat. i got my header for 160 bucks with an o2 spacer that keeps the check engine light off. there is the same header still for sale for 150 now.

could you please PM me with the details on the headers? i'd like to look into getting them

BTW- I don't know of any shops who make a header-back exhaust system for the Spec V... you're going to have to buy a cat-back, then a downpipe.
www.hpautoworks.com sells a nice downpipe for the Spec V, and they sell good priced exhaust sysytems, I would check them out.
Look into the APEXi WS2 exhaust, its a bargin.

That problem doesn't seem to apply to Spec V's after the year 04.
But I do think that he should buy a header as a first mod... it easily makes the most power (as far as a staight bolt on).

it's not supposed to be a problem for 04's and up, but i have seen it.

Well, nothing is impossible. Doesn't matter, he should buy a header first.

NISMO catbacks are pretty expensive... the APEXi WS2 looks/sounds a lot like it.

Don't cheap out to much on the Header the OBX crap has been known to crack. I had the Nismo w/o cat and I loved it. Also if you want to go cat less you should ck out the Stillen , DC, and Strup headers that take out both cats.

There shouldn't be a big difference between the two.

What the are you talking about I've driven two with two different setups and neither were that bad. Open header on the other hand was painfull

I made the sticky how-to on www.b15sentra.net for the o2 simulator.
As for the going catless, just remove the pre-cat by buying a shorty header. I never had any problems with my aftercat and my car sniffed clean too. RIP my 02 Red Spec V

Actually, I agree with him about the Spec V sounding like ass. When you remove both cats, the Spec V will sound like a clan of bumble bee's flying out of your ass.

I was refering to how loud they were. Even at that I don't think my sounded like the bumble bee thing. Besides a nise resonator would pretty much eleminate any of the buzzing. persona;y I think open dp sounded the best a little on the loud side but still sounded like music to me

I'm talking about on a N/A Spec V.
And keep in mind that you never had a straight pipe, you still had your cat housing... which acted as another resonator.

It sounded like $hit...
My Spec V sounded like $hit, your Spec V sounded like $hit, all catless (or open header) N/A Spec V's sound like $hit.

It sounded like crap until I got on it. At idle, it sounded broke.
And I wasn't trying to be hostal, just speaking my mind.

in order to get the least "ricey" sound your need to have a big resonator, the company with the biggest resonator in the cat-backs is the Apexi WS2, i am installing the DC Sport header and catless downpipe today on my buddy's 04 specV, as long as you have a large resonator you will get the power with out the crappy ricey noise

Strap a weedwacker to you head. :)
One bit of advice is to not go crazy big on the piping size, or leave a cat on there(the last one). NA cars rely on back pressure to scavenge gasses and slightly to build compression. You will see free flowing exhaust at high RPM's but at the expense of low end torque.
I didi this on my Monte Carlo SS, and while it sounded good, it never had any balls. It was out of power by the time I could take advantage of the flow.

this was kinda stupid for me to do but i bought the headers and then decided to go turbo, so they only have about 1200-1500 miles on them.
they have been sitting in my basement since 04.
