View Full Version : Something (car wise) thats been on my mind....

Well, i'm one of those guys that always wants another car.

Right now, i own 3. I got a 1992 Honda Civic SI. GSR swapped, and the engine has alot done to it. Just got it re-painted, and the initior is slowly getting put back together. Still not streetable.

I also have a 2008 Honda Civic Mugen Si. I got hella lucky finding one (dealership marked it up as a normal Si sedan). And i also own a 2000 Dodge Durango R/T (winter driving).

I'm not hurting money wise, but right now, i'm not making as much as i did before (going to college, GI bill paying for everything, plus $1g for "rent").

My thing is, i've been thinking of selling of 2 of 3 vehicles. Just to save cash.

1. Sell off the durango and the mugen, save a **** ton of cash, and buy a beater subaru or 4x4 pickup for the winter.

2. Sell off the mugen and hatch, and keep the durango. graduate college, get me a nsx (always wanted one, almost got one, but, had to help out famliy money wise)

3. Sell the hatch and durango, and buy beater 4x4 for ****ty pa winter, keep the mugen for nice weather drives.

And another reason is lack of space. My parents driveway (yes, living wiht parents to save money while going to college) is full of cars, and i'm using all the bays in the garage (which is technically mine, since i paid off the loan for it for my parents, thus no NSX).

Inputs, flames?

College should always come before cars. Tough it out now so you don't have to the rest of your life.

And you live at home, its very toolbag to have 3 cars and live with mommy.

Just my 2 cents

well, college is paid for right now, i used to be in the military. got out in july. so, i'm using the POst 911 GI bill to pay for it.

full tution covered, $1000 for books every semster, just about $1000 BAH for "rent" every month long as i stay in school.

Haha. See how much better this place is than that other place we came from, Sean?

Why don't you wait until after winter? That way you can drive the durango all winter, work on the hatch and then maybe you'll have a better idea about what you'd rather keep.

Is the only car you have a payment on the mugen?

not really, the guy just called me a toolbag.

yeah, the mugen is the only car i got payments on, and, if i felt like it, i can pay it off completly right now, just need to build up more credit for later.

good of you to help out your family. if they are in a position where your assistance is no longer needed, why don't you get your own place, and sell one of the cars (mugen). now youve already have a winter beater, and you can work on the civic. after winter, as others have mentioned, reevaluate. cars are a terrible investment, and nothing beats living in your own place.

You know my thoughts on moving out. I don't think it's a good situation, living at home, and I think you'd be a lot happier living on your own. I understand why you're there, but I think it's going to **** you in the long-run.

Honestly, live with your parents til ur done school. If your parents dont mind you staying there and are not on ur case who cares. Finish college, while in college save what you can, then get out and buy ur own house. Dont rent its a waste of cash, more so then a car.

As far as cars go, keep the 2008 civic and sell the other two.

I don't see what the big deal is living with your parents while your in school? From my own experience, it seems to me that most kids who move out at a young age, were able to do so because they A) Worked from a young age B) Parents covered their expenses enabling them to save their money. I have been paying for 85% of my own things since I was 15, and there is no way in hell I could ever afford to move out right now, and I am 21. A lot of the people I know who live on their own and are 19, 20 years old sacrifice a lot to do so, something I wouldn't be willing to do right now because I have more important things going on, like taking full advantage of my education.

Also renting is economically a smart choice right now. People aren't able to buy houses and sell them a year later for 75,000 more like they could. Right now, your pretty much getting what you payed for, many times less. So I don't see how that is a good investment? Renting is great if you are in college or just got out. It gives you a place to live with 0 obligations. If you don't have a 'career' than I think it would be silly for anyone to go out and buy a house.

Scapegoat
09-25-2009, 09:57 AM
renting isn't a bad option at all. i'm single, i don't need to be dealing with the costs involved in upkeep of a house if something should happen, or taxes for owning a house.

Ok but if renting is such a great thing, please tell me the return on your investment. You are basically giving someone money so you can live somehwere with, 0 obligations. What I killer investment!! Sure buying a house and selling it in this market is not going to get you a lot of money but it is still investment that will grow in value over time, where as in an apartment, you want out you are not getting any money back from all the money you put into staying there. if you can only afford under 1000 a month for housing then yes renting maybe your best bet, but anything over that in rent then why not buy a house. Hell a mortgage at 5% interest in the amount of 170,000 is roughly 990 a month over 30yrs.

Property Taxes, Insurance, Maintenance. Depending on where you live and the size of house you could be adding 10 grand onto that mortgage payment each year just in taxes

yes but a) 170,000 dollar house in my area is gonna get you a shed..
b.) if your single and young it may become difficult when adding on... taxes for that house, all utilities(which are sometimes included in rent), closing costs, home owners insurance, maintenance on the house, the list goes on.
c.) while a house may seem like a killer investment, you may not survive financially the whole time before you can sell it for that profit.

Yes, but rent is always going to go up. If you're smart about your mortgage, your payment won't. In 15 years when a decent 1 bedroom apartment in my area is renting for $2500+, I'll still be paying the same $1600/month I am now and I'll own my house.

My first apartment was a tiny-ass studio and I paid more than double what my parents paid for their mortgage, in the same area, for a house they bought 10 years earlier.

There are pros and cons for each side. Dealing with a leaky roof or paying taxes is well worth it to me to own my own home.

I plan to buy in Poconos. Here in NJ a 1 million home could have 50 grand in taxes a year. NJ is on some serious crack.

Are you a even a home owner? Do you know how much more it cost just in electricity to heat/cool a 4 bedroom house over a 3 room apartment? That's only one factor, there are still 600 other reasons why owning a house is 10x more expensive than renting.

I don't know if you have noticed, but lots of people over the past 2 years have NOT made profit on the sale of their house. As in they payed 350,000 for their home, and sold it for 275,000 - 300,000. So that's a 50,000 dollar loss, plus all other expenses. So your telling me that, that is more "profitable" than paying 2 grand a month for a nice apartment. for 2-3 years? Christ, houses were selling for 1,000 dollars in some parts of the country.

^not to be a dick. but ALOT of peoplehave also made well over 100k by selling their home. Sure, right now might not be the best time to sell. But now is certainly the best time to buy. Actually, wait a few months, they're predicting another housing market fall. I guarantee that the housing market will go back up in the next 15 years. People dont typically buy houses to live in for 3-4 years, they buy them to live in for 20-25 years atleast.

So you're saying if you wanted to stay in an apartment for 10 years, your rent would never go up? C'mon. You sign a lease, usually for a year, after that your landlord can increase your rent.

I managed rental properties for 3 years, in order to just break even each year, we had to increase our prices by an average of 13% when each lease was renewed.

So while the price to rent an apartment will continue to increase, my mortgage payment will always stay the same. I also save about $300/month now that I own a house, rather than rent.

Owning a home isn't for everyone. If I weren't married and settled here, I wouldn't own a house; it would be pointless. However, implying that owning a home is a bad financial move is just plain ignorant. It all simply depends on your situation, your lifestyle and your goals as well as being able to live within your means.
