Bent Valves in 2002 WRX

How expensive would bent rods be to fix in a 2002 WRX? I am asking out of curiosity because there is this dealership in West Chester selling a 2002 WRX with "2-3 bent valves" because the timing belt broke. I am asking out of curiosity because it is priced for $3,995 and that is really cheap for a 2002 so I would be interested in it. thanks.

Motor has to be pulled... heads have to be pulled... new gaskets, head studs, etc. I'd guess at least $1k for parts and labor, could be more. If the dealer never opened it up then they cant tell you for sure whats wrong in there. If the pistons hit the valves, there may also be damage to the pistons.
It could be a good cheap buy, but just understand that its a gamble.

Yeah, I get that much, but I was thinking that there's plenty of people here who know shops and could give me a pretty accurate price, also since there are so many in the area it wouldn't be an exactly hard job, I would assume.

Could I drive this thing around without pushing it hard or should I try to talk them into fixing it or could I talk them down a bit more because of the hassle? I think I could drive it home from WC, it's only 45 minutes away, but I mainly need it right now to look for work.

I'm sure anything is possibly, but it will probably cost $$$

I definitely would not plan on driving this until its fixed properly. I guess you could drive it a short distance to get it home or to a shop, but thats something to ask Ryan. Definitely should not become any form of transportation for you until its fixed though.

Well, I'll go see it soon since it's not too far away and see how it runs. They might be exaggerating the problem, idk. They could also be trying to sell a lemon. Only way to tell is to go there, which I will.

If you can do the labor yourself isn't a good deal. The only thing you will probalyl have to out source will be having the heads checked/milled.

This isn't a quick job either. Does give you a chance to built it right from the start with the block out though.

As troll said, its still a gamble either way.

I'd say it doesn't sound worth the trouble to me!! My Cavalier had bent valves after the timing chain jumped from a bad tensioner... helloooooo $2 grand of work already ;)

If you can do the work yourself then go for it, It should only be valves but in rare cases the piston gets damaged too. Also you should replace all the intake valves while your in there, why take the chance of having to do the head twice. The parts will probably run you close to 1k alone if you are replacing all the intake valves, headgasket, headbolts, etc etc. If you don't want to grind you will have to send out to a machine shop as well.

Bottom line: only buy if you can handle the work yourself

Its a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder boxer (H4)... you could look for a complete used WRX motor from 02-05 which should drop right in there as well... not sure what they go for but they're probably not cheap.

A little over-priced for that. It really depends on how easily and cheaply you can secure a motor, and if you have the ability to do it yourself you can save some money there. Personally, I would stay VERY far from this car.

Fixing Subaru heads with bent valves is $$$$$$. If the dealer said "oh 2-3 bent valves" without opening hte motor they have no idea exactly what is wrong. Bent valves= shot guides, thats even more money to fix. If the valves bent hard enough then the quench area could also have damage.. Not only that, but if the piston hit hard enough it could also wipe out a bearing.
