In specific, what can I do with a 1990 Miata?

I really want to know what sort of engine compatability it has, you know what I can swap into it.

Well any help is awesome!

I don't know why you would post that in this section?

Sorry can't help you out. I am not even sure that I saw any Miata guys on this forum.

It's all up to you. I have seen some weird stuff jammed into those little guys. Chevy's, SR20DET Nissans, etc...

Did you happen to get a shell? Cage it and have some fun!

I don't know about swaps, but there are supercharger/turbocharger kits available for miatas.

I looked at a miata before I bought my subaru. The miata was so much more fun to drive. :driving:

That looks pretty bad ass. Definitely not the average miata driver's car.

I heart that car.

You should figure out how to throw a 13b in there, and TURBO!

I think PJ Bonifacio did that to a miata he built. It was in one of those sport compact mags a while ago.

It's not a "kit" exactly. The fender flares are off of a mazda factory N2 race car. As for the spoiler on his trunk, I don't know. The front lip looks like its from Garage Vary (I think the rear lip is as well, but can't say for sure).

The engine is the 1.8 liter BP with an FMII (www.flyinmiata.com) turbo kit. That kit is good for about 220whp as it's sold, but that car has a lot more than the standard kit (although not too much for power).

As you pass 250hp and start heading towards 300 you will break transmissions (that particular car has a 1999 tranny iirc) and go through engines. The TII RX7 transmission can and is used frequently for guys making lots of power. The bp has a cast iron block and can handle serious power once the other internals are upgraded.

There are cold-side supercharger kits available that offer similar power levels and insane torque and throttle response from BRP and flyin miata. Jackson racing and vortech also make supercharger kits.

Swapping in a nissan sr20 is a waste of time IMO, the stock engines rev wonderfully and can be built for power and turbo'd much easier than an sr20 can be installed. People have a hard-on for that motor(sr20) and I'm not really sure why.

There are lots of 'monster miatas' (v8 swaps), and at least one guy has swapped an f20 out of an s2000 into one. There are also kits available for 13b swaps.

www.miata.net has a wonderful forum where you can get lots of info on anything you will ever want to know, including any of the swaps I've mentioned in this post.

www.miata.net
www.miatamania.com
www.rspeed.net
www.metromotorsports

There's tons more links that I can't think of right now, but the most important is the miata net forum, lots of knowledgable people there, and almost all the major miata vendors frequent it.

I poked around a little bit mroe today for some info on that miata. The hood and mirrors I still don't know about, but the lips are from Garage Vary, and the spoiler is OEM.

Mirrors are from aerodramatics. I almost bought a set for mine.

Yeah, I don't get it either. As far as I know a stock miata motor with nice internals is better and a lot easier to do.

Those Miatas were dumped lower than Frank's s2k.

I've seen a couple of Miatas with ITBs.

And i've heard the first gen miata is rather boost friendly with its low compression ratio.

freak foot did a really good job summing it up.

flyinmiata and BEGi make great turbo kits that can support over 300 hp

280 ish hp is about the point where you have to upgrade the internals on the engine. the block is VERY strong.

jackson racing, brp, begi, and now flyinmiata make s/c kits.

The miata loves forced induction.

You can swap alot of stuff into a miata, v8s are most common and cheapest (ls and 5.0). The engine bay is very versatile and can fit many motors.. but a I6 would push it.

The miata loves light rims and sticky tires.

You CAN make a turbo kit for under $600.. I am doing it. im at about 370$, and all I need is a mani, downpipe, and cold side pipeing.

I can answer any qs you have!

I'd say run the stock motor, but if you have a hard-on for a swap, google FE3. Slap that with some ITBs in there :)

search for monster miata it will be the best you can do, its a ford v8 swap and they are stupid fast and its all a kit

FE3.
FE3 swap FTW, One day it will be in my 6. The miata engines are tanks, very well built and can handle some serious power.

You'll be limited to about 5-6 psi for the budget set up; for more boost, you'll want to spend the money on a standalone unit and IC. But, 5-6 psi is more than enough for such a small light car.

yeah, imma run 5-6 psi. Should give me 35 to 40 more hp, which is almost 50% more power. Eventually ill get a I/C and a megasquirt.. and up the boost

How tall are you? Anything above 6'2" is a stretch. the 90-97 seats are a little lower and offer more head room. The 99-05 seats sit up 1" higher. 90-97 and 99-05 do not have tilt steering. the 06+ do.

there is a greddy turbo kit thats popular that with an intercooler and ms you will be set try 15psi.com.
hope this helps

the greddy turbo is not the route you want to go if you want more than 200whp. the manifolds needs reilef cuts before installing or they blow out.its a small turbo and gets hot quickly.

Begi or FM is gonna be anyones best bet for a turbo miata. Reliable, well priced, and pleanty of support.

miatas are awesome cars. i had a 93 miata before i got the bmw and loved it. they handle great and theres literally laundry lists of things you can shove in the engine bay. the easiest swap i think would be the 1.8l miata engine from i think its...94 and up?(correct me if im wrong guys) and get a turbo for that and you'll have one hella fast little gokart. somtimes i wish i never got rid of mine :/ o well.

Anything can be done. Proven easier swaps would include :
94-00 bp engine from a miata.
monster miata 302 swap
lsX series of engines
http://flyinmiata.com/V8/Geoff/index.php
rotary:
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c328/jdmeg2/1440a3df.jpg

On a side not the miata has huge aftermarket support. Most of the links were already posted.
available:
superchargers hot or cold side
turbo kits
irtb's
headers
intakes
exhausts
stand alone ecu's
suspension
brakes
everything you can imagine.

My may not be as bad ass as the black one above, but it still has a little kick to it. I, however, have an NB (99-05, for those who aren't familiar w/terms). I got the majority of my parts from Flyin Miata and Miata Moss Motors (miatamania).

With the 90 you can do the 1.8 swap, 302 V8, or a rotary.... which is what I would love to do as my next project car. Having a rotary in a miata just entails one crazy ride. I saw a video with one about a year ago and still can't get it off my head.

rotarys are less common than you would think. because there is no kit. its all custom work, just like when they swap in sr20's.

easiest are LSx and ford 302 hands down.

get a 94 bottom end, 99 head, turbo it with a 2560 and tune with a MS. cheapest way for most power. good tune and quality parts can put you in the upper 200's close to 300 at about 15-17psi.

Im making 250 on a 1.6 on a 2560 turbo. the 1.8 spools it faster.
