View Full Version : Recharging K+N Filter...? (How much to oil it?)

I cleaned the K+N panel filter that has been sitting on my shelf because I finally decided to put it on the car. I actually cleaned it 3x because dirt just kept coming out of it over and over. I bought it used so no I didnt run it that way.
Now when it comes to oiling it... the recharge kit came with an aerosol spray can for the oil, I kinda gave it two light coats on each side as if I were spraypainting. I'm not sure what the right amount is though. Dont want to over oil it but I dont want to under oil it either. It has an even pinkish color to it now, as opposed to pretty much white when it was clean.
If anyone can help it would be appreciated, thanks.

ah, i didnt thikn about that... ok yeah i guess it should be the same general color as they are new. i'm letting mine sit and soak a bit more but i think it should be ok, i went over it one more time again lightly, just trying to get in all of the creases. i guess the aerosol spray is new, and its kind of a pain to direct such a fine mist where you want it to go.

I have heard that you have to be careful about over-oiling those filters because of excess oil coating MAF?

yup... happened to me, it sucks cause you'll be drivin and then the car wont want to run. i finally figured it out and just put my stock air filter back in and cleaned the maf (LIGHTLY spraying the bars with carb cleaner) and it ran brand new again. just be careful not to use much, its bad

be sure to let the filter dry/set for at least 12 hours and don't go nuts on the oiling. I've seen people really screw up their maf (as mentioned) and have a coated intake tube because of over-zealous oiling.

ha, my intake (turbo inlet) tube is already coated with blowby... and the k+n is intended to be reused with this recharge kit. i put what i felt was a good even coat of oil on it... still less red than the photo... and put it in. i'll check my MAF sensor in a week or two but i think i'll be just fine...

you'll never get that purple color that you're trying to match. the red/pink coat is fine.

You guys put 50,000 to 100,000 miles on your K&Ns already?

that interval is crap, I noted a tremendous loss of flow with a dirty filter at only 15k.

I consider their 50/100k interval as marketing crap.

but its easy to reoil it and re-use it why spend more on a new filter when it was designed to be reused

I dunno, I've heard from multiple places that the filter should work better while a bit dirty... I've also heard tuners recomend the same (50k) with oiled filters.

I've heard the same and read the same but have personally experienced the opposite in 2 different cars that I own. I am just posting what I've actually dealt with. :)

well i was planning to recharge the filter every 15k or so... figured i'd just go on stock intervals.

Mine got dirty after like 5K, I guess it depends where you are driving it.
