TST: When did you pick up your car
I was 19… 5 years ago… august of 01
TST: What got you into DSMs?
I bought first car from parents… a naturally aspirated Eagle Talon with an automatic transmission. I always liked the turbo models and ended picking this one up when I had the chance.
TST: How did you learn about DSMs?
I worked at a gas station when I was 17 and ended up being a manager there so I picked up a lot of what I know from that. When it came to turbos I did a lot of reading on my own, but asking questions and watching at the gas station helped me out a lot with the mechanical ability.
TST: And at this point you can pretty much build a car from the ground up?
Yeah the only thing I haven’t done on my own is assemble the transmission which I got from Shepard Racing, and my buddy assembled my block for me at Mahler Engine Service where he works.
TST: What are your goals with the car?
Its almost done now… I want a fast street car… a low 11 second street car. Something that handles well at an AutoX event and is fast in a straight line to at the drag strip.
So the motor is in, what’s left now?
Well, I still have to put the AEM [standalone engine management] and GT30 turbo in, then maybe a big brake kit, some aftermarket rear axles and a roll cage, but it’s pretty close to complete.
TST: Any other cars you’ve owned worth nothing?
Not really… in the last 5 years I’ve probably had 12-13 DSMs… I either play around with them or fix them up and sell them… the one I have now is really the only one I’ve spent a good amt of money on. I’m into bikes too… I got a brand new GSX-R 600 with just a race tire and exhaust, not much you really have to do to them to make them fast.
TST: You said you’re planning on keeping the DSM for forever…
Yeah I plan on sharing this with my son eventually, I love this car. This winter I got real serious about it… transmission, block, head, AEM, GT30, its all rebuilt from the ground up. The car has never been to the track, but I’ll definitely be there once things are all finished. If I don’t hit mid 11s I’ll want to shoot myself.
TST: How much power are we talking about?
My goal is 500 whp on race fuel once things are all finished, at probably around 28 pounds of boost. If this turbo doesn’t get me there then I’ll step it up… I have the 3055 now but will go to the 3065 if I need to. It should be pretty sick.
TST: What do you think about the whole stigmatism that DSMs are unreliable?
I never had a problem with my car, you’ve got to know how to work on them but it all comes down to how well you take care of the car. I was making 318 whp with just an AFC tune on the stock bottom end without any problems.
TST: Any future projects once the car is done?
Yeah… buy a house… with a big garage. I’d like to put a lift in there and everything.
TST: Any other automotive projects you’d like to undertake?
I’d like to get a Supra one day, not to get crazy, just some simple stuff.
TST: So how about a final word about you or your car…
I love my car, I hope to be a father one day and that car will be there… I love DSMs… you hear a lot of horror stories about them, and the only people I know who are into them are the guys who bought them off of me. I like that it’s a little different… you don’t see a lot of clean DSMs around.
