Ok so im thinking of buying the 1996 talon tsi awd from the fs thread, and as it states it has 110k miles on the engine, so i was thinking of buying and rebuilding the engine. Does anyone know of any approx. costs and any good dsm shops that could do it around the philly area?

I haven't checked out that particular car but if the engine isn't tired, why would you want to rebuild it now?

Well thats another thing i wanted to ask. I mean I have a honda now and 110k miles on a honda is nothin, but i don't know what that means for a dsm, i dont think they are as good as honda's in that sense. And I know it all depends on the car and everything, but in general, are dsm's good higher mileage cars?? Plus I talked to him, he said it smoked, but it was from a bad turbo, so im not making any decisions till i actually get to check it out, im just tryin to find out what ill be lookin at ya know

177k on my motor, no issues. doesn't smoke, just needs a new gear box that is going in shortly.

I bought a DSM brand new back in 90. I ran it hard for almost 200k miles. I mean around 100k I put a 16g on it and it ran low 13s to mid 12's on pump gas the rest of it's life. It was strong till the very end.
4g63 has an iron block and well designed head that will last a long time. 7 bolt motors are finicky but if it hasn't crankwalked yet then you should be fine and you would better off leaving it alone for now.
Have the crank checked and then you should be good.

how can you tell a 7 bolt from a 6 bolt and what is the diff?

Dont invest in the 7 bolt, your best bet is just do a 6 bolt swap, the 420a motor is known for crankwalk as im sure most of you know...

7 bolt motors came in 92.5+ cars. All GVR4s are 6 bolt. And I doubt anyone would try to stick a 7 bolt in there.
The single biggest difference is the flywheel is bolted to the crank with either 6 or 7 bolts.
6 bolt motors also came with beefier rods.

Thankss everyone for the info. How do u do a crank test? Can I do when i go look at it, or do u have to disassemble anything? And im sorry if i sound like an idiot, but what exactly is crankwalk? I hear so much about it and i have no idea what it is

I bought my 2g gsx, with 101k. and i beat.. i mean beat the ish out of it for 25k miles, boosting it all day, lol and had no major problems at all. of course i dont have it anymore buts thats another story. im taking it alot easier on my new dsm. but yea, i beat my dsm to death and it still ran great till the day i got rid of it.

I mean I take care of my cars, rarely beatin on them real hard. I open it up every once in a while but nothing bad. So i guess the only main thing i have to worry about is crankwalk. Thank you 2point4DSM for that website. If anyone who has done this before would want to go with me to check it out I would greatly appreciate that. And anymore input is also welcome. Thank you very much to everyone so far

I've never heard of a 420a motor crankwalking. Why don't you stay out of dsm discussions from now on?

Agreed. I don't think it is common on the chrysler motor but any motor can crankwalk if the thrust bearing isn't set properly or the clutch pedal isn't adjusted properly.
I've even heard of an mk4 Supra motor crankwalking from tuning with an AEM. How?????
The story goes, the car was hard to start for various reasons after AEM was installed. I suppose it had a heavy clutch too, and there was no effort to disconnect the clutch switch so the person had to hold the clutch pedal down the whole time they are cranking this motor.

420a is a non turbo 2g eclipse motor also the talon will be coming with a 4G63. oh and to answer your question about the reliablity of a dsm mine has 251,000 miles on it and i run 20psi daily

If you want aftermarket cams i have some HKS 264/272 cams brand new in the box. the cheapest you can find them is at extreme psi, for $589, im selling mine for $550, no need for them. let me know man. ask any dsm'er, these are perfect cams, unless you plan on going all out sub 10. times.

how do those compare to FP and comp?

HKS cams have been the tried and trued cams for DSMs from the beginning. Many people have gone fast using them. They are much better than stock.
Comp cams are the latest and greatest right now and a lot of people swear by them and are trading in their HKS cams for up to 60 hp differences.
Personally, I like to watch products for at least a couple years before I hop on the bandwagon. The last cam fad involved crane cams which turned out to wear away and turned motor oil into a metal soup which caused the death of several motor and turbo setups.
