beware, n00b questions below:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/JDM-4G63GTE-LSD-5-Speed-Transmission-AWD-90-94-Eclipse_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33615QQitemZ802 2379958QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW
I'm not aware of the 'te' variation, what's the difference between that and the 4g63 that we run around with? I performed a search and came up with nothing on this forum.
in the auction I listed above, they advertise it as having an LSD in the transfer case. did mitsubishi ever make a true LSD center diff for our cars?
also, what's a Phantom Grip LSD?

I'm familiar with both torsion and clutch style LSD units from working with my bmw but I've never seen the above unit before. I'm guessing that's for the rear diff? it's a shame they don't provide specs for it like percent lockup etc.
thanks,
Ron

GTE is a new one to me too. It must be a JDM thing. Otherwise, maybe it has something to do with their feedback rating, lol.
And, "JDM 4G63-GTE 5-Speed Transmission AWD LSD with Transfer Case," means to me that the tranny has a LSD. And the transfer case just comes with it but doesn't mean it has a LSD.
None of the DSMs came with a transfer case LSD but all of the AWD models came with a LSD center diff that is controlled by a viscous coupler.
It is basically a fluid filled device that controls power sent to the front and back diffs. When either end slips too much the fluid heats up and locks them together trying to achieve a 50/50 torque split. One of the problems with this setup is that if you run different sized tires (old vs. new) it is easy to burn this thing up. I've heard of them leaking the viscous fluid into the tranny. Very rare though but still it is always best to run the same tires with the same thread depth all around.
also, what's a Phantom Grip LSD?
It is comprised of two pieces of metal that sandwich the center shaft of the front diff. It tries to lock the diff by springs that tighten the metal pieces on the shaft. If it works it won't last long, lol.

I figured as much on that phantom grip setup. thanks for the advice on it, I'll pick up a traditional 4 bolt rear then...but I really didn't want to lose my aws.
I'm familiar with the viscous setups, my montero runs one but it's also lockable.

4 bolt rears came with an LSD option. Mine has LSD. :) But the reason for going with a 4 bolt rear is cause the half shafts are tougher. The 3 bolt rear (90-91 Talon/Eclipse/Laser and all GVR4s) tend to snap or twist the half shafts around the 11s. The diameter of the shafts are thinner.

thanks, I see one on ebay right now and I can probably score one from a salvage yard at worst case.

Hold on.... Why not ask the local DSM guys if they have one sitting around.

one more question, do run a 4 bolt rear, do I need to swap out spindles as well? what else do I need to bolt it up?

My car came with one. The reason I got a 92 GSX.:)
You need the pumpkin, halfshafts, and spindles. Otherwise, I'm not 100% when it comes to the GVR4. You need to talk to the GVR4 guys about that.
