View Full Version : Who still has summer tires on?

i realized a few nights ago that some people dont worry all that much about taking their summer rubber out into the snow. seemed like a kind of "oh well i'll just be real careful and be fine" kind of thing. i'm just wondering how many out there are really doing this.
i'll say it now and i'll only say it once... i've heard of more intelligent things in my day. but anyways i wont harp on you anymore, just curious to see how widespread this practice is...

snow tires are overrated if you want to go play in 1 or 2 inches of snow yeah! i was wishing for way less traction out there. when we were on street road i was outlaunching and outbraking barry by buslengths though... haha.

Me, but not like it matters. They're supposed to be AWP, but snow ratings are below most AWP tires....

They go in straight lines fine. Turning, however, sucks the big one.

driving on summer tires in winter conditions, even w/o snow on the ground is not the wisest choice you can make. the biggest issue is the fact that summer compounds are not designed to operate properly when the temps drop below 50 or so degrees, so you will have increased stopping distances, loss of traction at times you don't expect (even when the ground is dry) and just overall poor performance

if you enjoy your car there is no cheaper insurance in the winter time than buying a decent set of all season tires and saving the sticky summer tires for when it gets warm out again (unless of course you own a beater car)

okay i've said my piece

Besides the PS, :iagree:

Summer tires loose tons of grip and wear much, much faster (and tend to chunk) in cold weather.

And how are they in the snow? Guess you'll find out.

The wrx runs Yokahama prada spec II's all year round. I figure it will see the road when its dry rather than snow. Now my hyundai elantra on the other hand is equipped with some snow tires, since thats my vehicle of choice to go play in the snow, the wrx usually stays home. She doesnt like to come out and play in the snow.

I just switched from my Nitto summer tires to my stock all season bridgestone RE92s. they suck in the snow but they are manageable as long as im careful. and to tell u the truth, i would rather be running on the stock wheels and tires than risk damaging one of my good wheels or having the wrong tire compound for the season.

Who remembers last winter when i hit the snow running my bald falken azenis?!?!?!

I learned my lesson.

I'll never run summers in the winter again. AWD, FWD, RWD, it doesn't matter, summer tires and cold weather can be a more costly situation than buying 4 new snow tires.

First year w/AWD and the Michelin Pilot Alpin's. Bring on the snow, I'm ready.

it could help if you had 2 way diffs in the front and rear diffs.......but even then the diffs are designed to optimally work in dry conditions w/sticky tires on the car

I'm putting snow tires on the front of my car, with "all-season" performance tires aft. Should make for some fun handling in the snow, but I won't have to worry about not making it up a hill like to had to last time.

TROLL

IMO, if you cant afford two sets of tires, then you should be stuck in all-season land. running summers year round on purpose is... well, unfortunately i have a feeling some of you will learn the hard way. all, front, or rear wheel drive, all cars use the same two wheels to turn and the same to brake, and thats where it matters in an emergency situation.
what i would recommend to those on a budget, is come april or may keep an eye on the personal for sale section of your favorite forum... the demand is way down for winter tires then and people are generally looking to dump them off. thats how i picked up mine for cheap.

Same, I can't afford it, hopefully next year. I can keep it safe on all-seasons... not optimal, but it works.

AWD cars on summers in the snow are just as bad as anything else, way worse than RWD cars on snows. And people with grippier tires on front, I'm not an expert, but from what I've read from the experts, you'll be better off in a straight line but are taking chances going around corners... i know a kid in an Audi that had a terrible experience last year. Not preaching, just don't want anyone getting any damage.

Meh, that depends on the car. I just put snow on my front and it's not hard at all to keep the back undercontrol. Of course my car is not only the understeer king, but has a very forgiving long wheelbase and excellent handling feel. I wouldn't try it on a short wheelbase car or something with numb handling.

I was home from active duty last winter for two weeks. I didn't both to change over to my winters and I smacked a curb going like 5mph. big time damage. Dented the fender curbed one of my 98 golds and bent a control arm. Ended up just getting a new control arm and getting the wheel rebalanced. Man that sucked I had to walk like a mile in the snow to get back to my house. (cell phone was dead) It was def. cold as sh*t.

i realized a few nights ago that some people dont worry all that much about taking their summer rubber out into the snow. seemed like a kind of "oh well i'll just be real careful and be fine" kind of thing. i'm just wondering how many out there are really doing this.

I picked up a set of almost new Blizzaks for $250 from the Junk Yard. A guy turned in a truck and they where sitting in the bed and the guy said they only have at the most 300 miles. They look new so I picked them up that day before anybody else could pick them up. You can still get winter's for fairly cheap. I picked up a set of Winterforces for the van and they where around 50 bucks brand new.

I have the winter tires on both vehicles with the stock wheels. The summers for the van is in storage and the wheels for the car are getting sold as soon as someone wants them. I just picked up a set of Advan wheels for the car for this spring.

I waited too long and went to winter tires last week. I have Potenza RE730 for summer. I put Michelin Pilot Alpin AP2 on my stock wheels (which I smartly kept), purchased from tire rack, mounted locally. Total setback was $560. It was $460 for the 4 tires shipped, then another $100 for mounting, balancing, stems, etc. It was a little cheaper after a minor military discount. I think I got fleeced on the service though. I did NOT expect to pay that much.

For those of you still on summer tires, remember, it's not just about the outer construction of the tread, but also about the rubber compound itself. ALL TRACTION IS AFFECTED, NOT JUST ON SNOW/ICE. Winter tires are designed to perform in cold temperatures, and summer in warm. I noticed right away that my summer tires were not grabbing as usual as soon as the temperature hit the freezing level, especially when I first drove away. It got somewhat better as they warmed up, but still nowhere near the grip level I am used to. The new winter tires grip right out of the driveway.

Think of the cost this way: you use each set 50% of the year, and since you now have two sets, it's virtually the same cost (in tread usage) as using one set of tires all year. Plus it's a hell of a lot safer.

Sorry if this has already been said.

that's b/c the summer tire compound is not designed to be used in temps below low 50*F range. the tire becomes very hard and if its cold enough outside, can act like a solid piece of rubber (very bad). all season/winter tires are designed to operate in temps below freezing, hence the good traction right out of the driveway  this is exactly why its very cheap insurance to go out and get a set of winter/all season tires for this time of year
