You need compound called rohdite(sp?) and a high speed buffing wheel.

Depends on the type of scratch. If you can feel it with you finger nail then you definitely need to buff it out. But considering glass has one of the hardest surfaces you need something harder to smooth it out but fine enough so it doesn't leave more visible marks and 2Mopars1Ford has a solution for that. Or this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/Glass-Scratch-Repair-Removal-System-House-Windshield_W0QQitemZ4424714288QQcategoryZ11704QQss PageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Of course if it is too deep to buff out cause buffing even the smallest scratch will take forever on glass then filling it might be the next best solution. Unfortunately, this only masks the problem and it might still be noticeable. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/LOCTITE-Bullseye-WINDSHIELD-REPAIR-KIT-Free-Shipping_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33686QQitemZ80 20037445QQrdZ1
Similar products can be found at auto parts stores like pepboys and autozone and usually found in the same section as RTV, glue, and expoxy.
The easiest to fix is the light blemishes which can sometimes be taken out with a product used to clean metals called never dull. http://cgi.ebay.com/Never-Dull-Metal-Polish-5-OZ_W0QQitemZ7202182901QQcategoryZ16239QQrdZ1QQcmdZ ViewItem
Or I suppose any metal polish might work considering the surfaces of metal and glass are similar to a certain extent.
The engineering guys can correct me on this one....
