Alright, so I've got to reserve a lens for the Watkins Glen Grand Am race. I want to shoot with something a little faster then my cheap EF70-300 f/4-5.6

I'm looking at renting an EF 70-200 f/2.8L. Where do you guys recommend to rent from? Opinions if there is something better out there for track shoots.

Well, i would definitely recommend getting the IS version, but that's a great lens and would probably work perfectly. Not sure where to go though.

depends on the area... sisforsurfing made a post about adoramas lens rentals in the beginning of the week.

I think there's a place down by the Riverview movie theaters that rents out camera stuff. I dont remember what the place was called though.

NY Camera is good, in Southampton on Street Road. Or if you have some time before the event and want to try the lens out for a longer time period you can try lensrentals.com or lensprotogo.com. I like both.

i've only ever gone to Calumet down in the city, always got good gear.

*im sure its the same for every rental place, but dont forget u need to be able to put down insurance or w.e., for the price of the lens + the rental cost. u get ur insurance payment back once the lens is returned, if in good condition. so 70-200 2.8 be prepared to put the $1,600 (or more!?!?) on a credit card, + the rental cost. just a heads up because i ran into a problem not knowing that the first time.

i was like yea let me get that sick 300mm 2.8, guy was like oh yeah thats a great lens! started up the paper work and said, ok ur total comes to $5,000+ , i was like :bigeek: nvm!

IS isnt gonna do **** for him if he's panning through the race. unless its a new one with 2 different IS choices. either way, his shutter speeds should be high enough that IS isnt going to matter. go with the non-is

The Non IS sucks, I used that last year at Formula D and it is not fast enough. I returned that damn lens the next day after Formula D. Try and get atleast the 70-200 F4L , you can usually find them on craigslist for 500 bucks.

Another +1 for NYCV in Southampton. I've rented two lenses from them with one being this past weekend and they always have what you wanted. Prices are fair, just make sure you give a call a couple days before you want to rent it to make sure they have a copy to rent out.

may not do **** for him, but it might...and for the marginal cost difference in renting, it is definitely worth it to have.

what? this post makes absolutely no sense. My non-is blew many IS lenses out of the water. that lens was golden

That's your opinion. I had a 70-300m Tamron and liked it way better than the 70-300 Canon. I missed so many shots with that Canon because it wasn't fast enough. Hopefully by the time FD comes around this year I'll have the 70-200 L 2.8

lol what are you talking about? The 70-200 f/2.8L is a faster lens I believe. Or am I mis-informed?

apparently he was talking about the 70-300 and the 70-200 in the same comment. the 2.8L is the way to go.
