View Full Version : why does my 240 mock me?!?!

So sometimes my car will start right up on the 1st try, some times it takes a couple turns of the key...some times I seem to need to make sweet love to it first...WTF?!?!
I'll turn the key and absolutely nothing will happen. If I hold the at the start position I can hear a clicking on the right hand side under the hood. I've changed the starter and that didn't fix the problem. I replaced the starter relay (the big blue one on the passenger side fender well) and that fixed the problem for a number of hours/starts. But now it's back to iffy again. Usually, if I jiggle the relay harness then try it again I can eventually get it to start. I've look at the wires going on both sides, coming to as well as leaving the relay and they look fine. Could it be the clutch pedal switch? But why the hell would I hear clicking under the hood? What the eff Jeff?!

try to check the battery/ alternator and alternator fuse. same thing happened to me i replaced all 3 when i got my car back on the road and it worked for me. Does any lights go on, on the dash when you have the key in the on position? or does the seatbelts go back automatically?

Oh yeah...I have full power. I checked the battery voltage...the alternator's good...everything operates like normal...the starter just doesn't attempt to start the car, like it's not receiving power.

How would an alternator affect the starting of my car? My battery fully charges and my car runs absolutely fine once it's on.

don't know what to tell you.
My car did the same thing, and once I replaced the alternator everything was good.
However, it is a cavalier, so it wouldn't surprise me if that makes absolutely no sense. This car always does some weird ass ****.

The only assumption I can make regarding your situation is that your alternator was not charging the battery enough to allow the vehicle to start. And unfortunately, that is not my problem.

Well, to be honest, I know that's not the problem because this all started over a year ago. It just progressively got worse over time...including all through summer.

maybe you check any 240 forums?

Sounds like a wiring issue if it works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't, especially if you have a new starter on there. The starter has a small ground wire that comes loose easy, check that. Werd.

I've checked all the connections. I'm wondering if it's the ground for the relay. That ground was pretty gunked up and nasty. Also, the relay clicks like a bitch when I try to start it and it doesn't start. And it's a sparatic clicking. Not uniformed at all. Sometimes the relay clicks once or twice, sometimes it clicks like a ****ing machine gun.

When the car decides not to start, check the signal wire on the starter. It should get 12 volts when you put the key into the start position. I had this happen on my Honda because the wire had a kink somewhere. The car worked fine and every now and then it wouldn't turn over. Then finally one day it stopped turning over. I just ran a new wire from the ignition switch directly to the starter and all is well.
Also if the grounds are as nasty as you describe them. Go ahead and make some new ground wires.

check the relay.... you can use a wire with spade ends and just jump the blue relay...

I thought it was the relay after the starter didn't fix the problem, but I replaced it with a brand new relay from Nissan. I did however try jumping the clutch switch last night and that didn't fix it either.

not sure if this will help any but i had the same problem with my integra. i changed the starter and its been fine ever since. what happened to my starter is the sil got locked and it would take a few hits for it to pop out. take the stater off and take it to a shop that builds them and have them check it out for you.

The reason I don't this the started is because I had the problem progressively get worse over a 8-9 month period. Then I parked it for winter with the plan of dealing with it when the weather got nicer. Now that it's out I thought I'd start tackling it. I replaced the starter with a rebuilt one and there was 0 improvement. I then replaced the relay with a new OEM unit from Nissan and the car was fine for 1/2 a day and then started to go down hill all over again. That tells me it's electrical with the wiring since I ****ed with all the wires to remove one relay and install the other. If the car doesn't start at all, I can jiggle the relay's wiring harness and it will start. So, it's either a wire or a connection. The problem is, I can't find a problem with either. The harnesses are clean as a whistle and the wires insulation look great. *shrugs shoulders*

So I was talking to my Dad and he thinks maybe it's the ignition switch's contacts when the key is turned to the start position.

Check the output on the ignition switch. Also, check the sockets for the relay.

We're going to. And I already checked the relay sockets...perfect!

Did you check for continuity on each socket while messing with the harness to see if its breaking up.
