Why in VW land its cool to strap as much random **** as possible to your roof?

I really don't get it. I don't really care to, but it'd be impressive for someone to make some sort of justification.

It's the new rice. 4-5 years from now they'll be asking themselves why they have a bike rack on their roof, but no bike.

i think its a homage to the old days when people didnt have enough room in their cars for their luggage (especially in beetles). i guess some people have just taken the idea and sprinted away with it

minus the half mannequin the other **** looked like it had a legitimate reason to be there. There was a cooler and 2 folding chairs, prob couldnt fit them in his beetle.

I think it’s just a style gone overboard. Back in the day I had a 72 beetle when alls I would do is Skate. I had the roof rack like in pic above but maybe used it twice. I had it mostly because of looks and I seriously see nothing wrong with that.

As for dudes putting sh** up there to make it look like they are using it that’s kind of beat but I think its more for that rat / horder look VW has going lately. Similar thing happen with Hondas trying to stand out at shows say 6-7 years ago with body kits, wings, etc but they all chilled out and now have a more solid clean style geared towards performance (for the most part)...

I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Just hope that the Immature Jap. car guys don’t start calling ALL Euros "trash mobiles" because of the select few (like the immature Euro guys call ALL jap cars rice)

I don't know what it is either. I have 3 friends that are really in VW. One that hasn't even met the other 2 and he says the same stuff as the others. All like, once you go VW, you can't go back and all. Apparently there's a like a VW culture or something they desire lol

I just had to look at their gallery lol at the tire, surfboard, and manikin. I dunno its just their thing, kinda like the rusted hood thing too. I don't really ask anymore it just is what it is.

I find it more interesting that at their bloweuros meet there were 240's and subies.

I also have a couple VW buddies and its sickning how they feel VW is SOOOO much better and superior then other cars. Kinda like how Hitler felt about his race... You should go to a VW meet / show and start up a conversation with SOME of these guys. They will try to drill it in your head how their cars are better then all others. Even if you beat them in a race it doesnt matter... their car is still better and you cant see it.

Just for the record though I do like the VW style (slammed, low and slow, crazy offsets but not over done) and I know not all VW guys are like that.

i dunno about the roof rack thing...im not a fan honestly, nor am i fan of being supre dropped with tires that are too small being streached over the rim look...i can say its probably most common in the VW world but ive seen both of those things on more than just VW's

I'm going to second that, if it doesnt fit it doesnt belong. That counts for luggage and wheels and tires lol.

The rusted hoods was like the last straw for me. Dumbest god damn trend ever.

What's worse? Honda kids are doing it now.

I've been involved with VW's since I was 16, and my family is from Munich, so I know a little about the culture. The roof rack thing pertains mostly to early bugs & mk1's, but some later models have sported them. Some of my friends that have them on, they do so to pay homage to the past. I know some guy's that carry a bmx bike on top of there car, but it's for transport around the show's, so that's legit. The rusty hood is showing repect to all the guys who came before, who where not worried about flashy paint, etc... Guys that where tuning these car's in the 60's in the rat rod style, it's kinda like the anti-pimped statement. I also ride sportbikes, so I can appreciate all the asian quality, and have love for non-euro cars. Which has influence my current build. Like I tell my crew "If my dub is rice, call me uncle Ben " In 18 years around dubs, I still haven't figured out the scene, and who wrote the book on what's acceptable?

I just hope this retarded trend doesn't move that well into BMW's and Porsche's. Germany's last hope to not look stupid in America.

funny, when I first saw the picture of the "rust hood" I thought it was the reflection of lights or some photo effect.

this reminds me of store bought acid washed, pre-washed, pre-fatigued, pre-ripped jeans & jean jackets.
it's nothing like the real thing.
