I just bought a new 09 Mazdaspeed 3 and was wondering if anyone knew if a cold air intake and BOV would void/ruin any warranties? its to late to call and i wanna order the parts tonight.

anything you do to a car can void parts of the warranty

Your best bet is to call the dealership (anonymously lol) and ask.

If its not installed by the dealer its probabaly gonna void it.

its touch and go at most places. some delaers say screw u the moment they see a modded car, others are different.

speaking as a former mazda dealership tech, they way we worked it was if the modded part was the obvious failure of the system, then screw u, u pay cash sucka. like we had a guy with a custom fabbed cold air intake and he had a check engine light for a mass air flow input problem. the real problem was that the intakes mounting spot for the MAF was too far away and was stretching the harness and most of the wires were pulled out. in that case, we cannot warranty that maf sensor or the work required to repair the harness.

on the flipside, if you install a short shifter and later on your oil pan is leaking, it should be repaired under warranty. no questions asked.
in your particular case with the speed3, a bov and intake wont void anything immediately.

thats my take as a former tech.

thats what i was thinking but when i talked to one of the guys earlier he was telling me its ok as long as it dosent involve modding the engine internals (basically how he put it) he said a CAI should be fine but to check with the service dept first.. he said that he would do it himself if he where me and not go through the cost of the service at the dealer since a CAI and BOV are basically bolt on modifications (if they dont void it) either way i would be nervous messing with a brand new car, im affraid of doing somthing wrong and screwing it up

Mazda has their own mazda speed cai that they sell which keeps the car cover under warranty but its like $400 or $500 installed. Imo thats a lot for a cai.

I didnt have my warrenty voided for an intake. But a BOV will certainly do it.

The law governing after market parts and warranties states that the dealer would have to prove that the after market part caused the specific failure for the warranty to be voided

I would say if you just bought the car take it through its break-in period before you start adding parts and mods IMHO.

My friend had a weird issue, where since his truck was lifted, they were not giving him warrenty work on a Throttle Position Sensor, stating that the larger tires and lift were the cause of it, which, IMO, makes no sense at all.

To the OP, doublecheck with the dealer YOU personally go through, and see what they tell you. As said before, some places will try to screw you over, others will wait and see what the real cause is.

they have to prove that its affecting said warranty item. Id like to see them prove that suspension somehow messes w/ a TPS.

I know Elliott18T has some minor bolt on and his **** is still covered by the dealership. He has cone filter, N75j valve, forge turbo inlet pipe, 3" downpipe, exhaust, and a forge hybrid BOV. I know for a fact he had something fixed at the dealer under warranty with all that stuff on it. They have to prove that the upgraded part caused the failure.

its more of a DV than a bov.. lol

according to SEMA and the Magnuson-Moss act, thats the only way a dealership/shop can look at it. if you intake or blow off valve was the obvious reason for mechanical failures in the engine you lose your warranty.

its touch and go at most places. some delaers say screw u the moment they see a modded car, others are different.

IIRC they can just deny warranty items affected by said Item.. yet still have to cover the rest that is not.
