My Goal is to break 12's for 2009!

After getting my car painted back in June/July 2008 I decided with the amount of expenses and miles my car already had at the time I was going to retire it as my daily driver. So as we got into the winter months I parked my Regal and started driving a 4 cylinder 5 speed beater I picked up. I have been enjoying the amazing mpg and manual trans. Being that we are now getting closer to spring I think its time to bring the regal out again. I still have some work I have to do with the car. I still have to install my Corvette brake upgrade, install my PLX wideband, poly dog-bone bushings, and try to pick out a set of 17” rims so I can eventually install some much needed wider tires. The narrow 225 tires are just not cutting it anymore on this car.

With the amount of people going turbo these days in my car I have been extremely tempted to demod my setup and go turbo. However I feel like I just had this setup installed onto my car and I hardly have any runs on it. My best ¼ so far is 13.003 @ 108.31 on street tires and pump gas and pulling a 3500lbs sedan. At that time my car was putting down around 320WHP at around 10psi if I recall. So instead of going turbo my goal for 2009 is to break into the 12’s on my everyday 225 wide street tires and pump gas. I want to break 12’s on a street setup before slapping on a set of drag radials which would make it all the much easier to accomplish this goal. I am not sure if I am going to be able to get off the line any faster then I am now. I just hope with my wideband installed, much better tuning because of the wideband installed, and possibly drop to a smaller pulley I can pull off 12’s finally on a street trim. I am so close it stinks! I just hope the first time I take it onto the track for 2009 I can somehow pull off a 12.99. My 108mph trap time is definitely there. I just need to do better then a 2.1 60 foot to get me that 12 second run finally. I plan to be going back to Atco to accomplish this so hopefully some of you guys will be there to catch my goal for 12’s. Wish me luck!

I used to install audio systems but got tired of it. I only do things for close friends. I like to do a system in my regal but it has a factory system that isn't too bad. I also don't want to go too crazy on a system because of weight.

Yeah i made sure I put extra into the rears and lowered the fronts down pretty low. I kept trying less and less psi to see if that would help. However it seemed to keep me around the same time. Just have to figure out as I race more what works the best.

be careful dropping pressure on street tires. Because of the stiff sidewall that street tires have for mpg/turning when you get below a certain pressure all you're doing is sittin on the sidewalls and cupping the tread actually causing you to get worse traction.

I think my tires are around 35-38psi normally. They can take a max PSI of i think 51PSI. When I go to the drag strip what should I set the fronts too and the rears? I think I have had the rears up to 48PSI and the fronts as low as 15psi if i can recall? I fill them back up to normal 35-38psi before I leave the track.

This is for 225/60/R16 tires.

im not saying run slicks or anything but maybe look at some stickier performance tires, and as said before tire pressure will help....

how wide is the rear wheel....if your tires are at all rounded maybe run a 235 or 245 with 50 or 55 profile

id never take a street tire down below 25psi

agreed. keep in mind that a street tire is not designed the same way as a drag radial.

if you reduce the pressure too much you will lose contact patch as the middle of the tire begins to buckle up and towards the center.

Thanks guys for letting me know about the tire pressure. Maybe that was the reason why I kept getting slower times because I would let out a little more front tires pressure every run? I have been told mixed truths about track prep. Some of the other guys on street tires at Atco raceway were telling me to lower the tires down that low. I have only been to the track 3 times so I don't have a lot of track experience behind my belt. One of the guys let out so much air in my front tires I didn't think my car would even roll. I had to put some air back into the fronts because I was worried about rim damage or even crashing.

I don't think there is a point for me to go wider tires on my stock rims. They are only 16x6.5 and are pretty heavy like 25lbs each if I recall. If I was to get wider tires I would get a much lighter aftermarket 17" rim that is wider then my stock ones. The 17" rims I am looking at right now are only 15 to 16lbs each. Right now my car has 225/60/R16 which really for my setup is too narrow and tall. If I go with 17" rims I am going to go with 245/50/R17 or 245/45/R17. I do plan to get some beater 17" rims to install some Drag Radials on and at that point I think those will be 255/50.

So until I get better performance tires or DR's should I set the fronts to 25psi and the rears to like upper 40psi range? The tires take a max PSI of 51 I think. Also some of you guys may think my car is RWD however its FWD.

no prob man, i was running, i think 30psi on my street tires... not sure what my 60's were... also remember that the air will expand as they heat up from runs. I would see the pressure rise quite a bit and let more out to get back down to 30ish. I was actually probably down closer to 20psi... but i have low profile tires, so there is less movement. I didn't notice any difference so i stay around 30. there is only so much you can do w/ street tires.

also keep in mind, with street tires you only want to spin them to get the dirt/pebbles off. smoking them/heating them up will do you no good as they'll actually get oily and lose grip.

When my GTO was stock i had the tires down to 25 in the back and didnt mess with the fronts...that netted me a 2.015 60' but thats also a RWD car. Im sure you noticed your MPH going down also as you lowered your pressure. Im sure you know the lower the pressure the more rolling resistance the car has...small factor but it definatley plays a part and could be the difference between that 13.008 and a 12.9xx
