I know several people running gutted MAFS and their cars are running fine. I alos know a few people that have had problems right away after gutting the MAF. Does this have to do with SAFC, tuning.....etc?

Hacking a maf will cause the car to run leaner so it will have to be compensated. Do not hack your maf unless you need to. If you do it prior it is senseless and a huge headache. Why mess with something when its fine??

yeAh i gutted my buddies maf on his 97ecleipse gst and it started to stall and putter out... so i put the metal finning back in and for some odd reason it stopped the problem... on some cars it helps out but others it causes hell... on my gmc jimmy it helped out... acually made me get better mpg but its hit or miss weather it works

I've never understood why people do this...

Any fins or screens on a MAF should be left in place. They are there to help make the air flow more laminar so that the MAF reads a steadier stream vs a turbulent mess. Removing it might help increase velocity EVER SO SLIGHTLY, but you'll be metering your air wrong so it won't do anything good.
The velocity you gain (super duper superficial) is countered by the poor metering.

There is 1 real reason why people do this. Its when they max out the MAF itself. Taking out the honeycombs and doing other little trick will allow you to bypass some of the air so it doesnt get picked up by the maf. As long as your running some kind of management you can compensate for it. As I stated previously....DO NOT do this unless you actually know what you are doing and why you are doing it.

Interesting.
I'd much rather switch to MAP than try playing games with what my ECU is seeing. But I'm anal about that kind of stuff.

I hear that you can run a gutted maf with an safc

You dont want to hack a MAF, the car will also be less consistant.
for example, you can do 1 3rd gear pull and get 10.3 A/f's and do another pull and get 11.1 a/f's.
You can use a afc to compensate because the car will idle lean most likely, but I didnt like how inconsistant my car felt with just the side honeycombs out, so i put them back in.

Here's a suggestion.
If you don't understand what a MAF does and why it is insanely important then don't touch it.

You can take a few honeycombs out, and compensate with the SAFC, your tune wont be as steady and what is the point, it seems like more work to take the honeycombs out, and retune, and it wont even be a consistent tune. The low throttle fuel trims will always be screwy even with a afc.
There is no reason to hack the 2g maf anyway, its good to like 450hp and has seen 10's, and if your making that much power I'm sure you have money to drop on another setup.

yea i agree with just leaving it

Or you could re-tune your computer to opperate off just a map input, and eliminate the maf all together. None of my cars have MAF's, but they came as "speed density" computers right from the factory.
Something to think about. But really only worth it if your MAF is the most restrictive point in your intake side.

I have a ported de-screened maf on my engine. Its was professionally done, but still. However my car runs MAF and Speed Density so its hard to tell if there are negatives.

I was am always under the impression of if it works don't touch it. I am pretty sure there are other ways to get more power without a MAF.
