Porsche will be presenting the world's first turbocharged gasoline engine with variable turbine geometry

Very cool article... here's a teaser:
The core features of the VTG system are the variable turbine blades guiding the flow of exhaust gas from the engine in exactly the direction required on to the turbine wheel of the exhaust gas turbocharger. The principle of variable turbine geometry thus combines the benefits of a small and large exhaust gas turbocharger all in one – a combination ensuring both very good response and high torque at low engine speeds as well as superior output and high performance at high speeds. And the supreme level of torque is now maintained consistently throughout a much wider speed range.

I remember reading something about variable geometry turbos a while back.
It seems like a very good idea, but what is the possible failure rate of this idea?

ever here of the CSX VNT? it stands for the Carol Shelby Xperiment Variable Nozzled Turbo. These were dodge shadows with I think 2.2Liter turbo engines sporting this variable nozzled turbo....and that was back in 90 somthin

So it has variable blade pitch?

Looks to me this turbo needs replacing with every other oil change, lol.

That's if it's driven hard. Otherwise, the occasional lawyer, surgeon or teen idol who drives this car just on the weekends should be ok with it, lol.

The Ford 6.0L diesel uses variable turbine blades. It doesn't have a wastegate to control boost, just chages the blade pitch. This is the first time I have seen it used on a gasoline application.
