Just wondering where you guys get most of your music for you IPods/MP players? Do you buy or use other means? I don't have any kind of portable music player and have been thinking about getting one since the radio sucks anymore.

I got most of my non-electronica from my own cd collection. The rest I got from transferring off of a friends mp3 player. Then I got my brother to give me his collection of electronica mp3s (3 dvds worth). Since then, just the few cds I might buy, or my wife might buy. I now have 33.2gb of mp3 files. I also rip at high bitrates (192+)

Friends and DirectConnect. DirectConnect is easily the best thing I've ever used for filesharing, even moreso than BitTorrent.

i use limewire as well. its very fast for music, plus you can get the crack code and dl the turbocharged version for free from their own site. i used to use bit torrent for my xbox games, but it was too slow. i thought they got shut down, but i guess not tho.

Pandora is very cool. I have had an account since the preview, and the new features make it better. It was only bad when they launced and then required subscriptions. Now it is available free with ads, or by subscription without them.

Well, we could talk all day about the moral implications of illegal music downloading. There seem to be a fair number of people who back up their massive pirate mp3 collections with something about "the music industry is dumb" or "sharing doesn't hurt artists" or whatever. All a bit dubious for me -- is it coincidence that music sales started plummeting the exact moment in 2000 that Napster came out? And these days, a lot of artist are selling DIRECT on itunes and etc. -- so when u pirate their songs, you are literally deciding not to pay the person who made the music -- there is often NO record company involved now....

Anyway ... my take is that I tend to use iTunes not for any moral reason, but just because I HATE dealing with the two main problems with limewire/bearshare etc

Problem #1 -- spyware/virus/filth
Problem #2 -- lack of selection

I'm into techno/trance/electronic music almost exclusively, and a lot of the stuff is actually pretty HARD to find on limewire... I could spend hours looking for it but I prefer not.

I tend to search around on iTunes for compliation series that I feel have good selections, and then just buy whole compilations... recently I've been spending way too much money on this series --

I'm with you on this one 100%. I once "borrowed" a set of music from a friends music player, and I vowed never to do it again. The only time I'll do it is with that music that cannot no longer be purchased (pretty much any electronica on a CD, since they are almost always limited runs). But that problem has been solved. I would like to recommend www.beatport.com for DRM free high bitrate electronica. It's an excellent, attractive music download site.

Pandora has been a life saver for me at work, since I don't have a way to remotely access my mp3 collection at home. Been able to find a lot of great bands that way too.

But as for me, I tend to buy a lot of cds from concerts more then anything else now, or order them from the bands website direct. Also, Myspace (as much as people hatee it) is good to find some songs that I can jam out to, before the cd is released.
