View Full Version : How did you get your car?

I am just curious to see how some fellow TSTers got their car. Did you buy it, did your parents? Let me start it off.

My Jeep payments + gas was killing me ($507 a month in payments over $140 a week in gas), had to change something. Jeep went out the door, in came the Red Dragon . I bought it. Which I hope so, I am 28 after all.

this has been discussed.

but i sold my gsr to put a down payment on my si. i got approved without a cosigner at a low rate but had my mom cosign so i could stay under my parents insurance so i only have to pay half of what i would be paying on my own.

now im hoping to sell it and buy somethin else.

Well my dad has helped me before with my cars. But I have gone through a long process of reselling and making profit and using that to buy the next car. I used my own money to buy the two-tone, borrowed the cash to get the 93 coupe, the 93 hatch was from borrowing cash to buy a 90 240 for $800, selling for $1800, buying a civic coupe for $1400, selling for $2400, and finally buying the 93 hatch for $2000. I don't feel like going through all the other previous cars.

hah, nice. No need to get into details. I just put up figures to show why my payments were ridiculous. I am curious on some in the 18 years old STi's. But I think I already know that answer to that.

Honestly, I won a lawsuit back in the day after my buddies and I were hit by a DUI driver. 90mph in a Geo Metro into the back of us (stopped, turning left) in a Toyota Sequoia. It really sucked. So yah... cash for both.. but I am BROKE as a joke now.. ugh.

And I am not saying that your parents buying you a car is bad. I mean my dad bought me my first Jeep (96 Grand Cherokee 120,000 miles on it) when his dad passed away and came into a little money. But everything after that was me. I was just curious.

Bought both of my cars and paid for everything on them by myself and am very proud of it. I found my GTO in VA. It was 25k out the door with tax, title all that. Drove down with my pops in his g35 about 350 miles, put down 14k cash and drove home. One of the funnest drive's i'll ever have. Nothing like smoking your dad on the turnpike. Paid the rest of the car off a couple months ago

In 1996 my dad bought a 1988 Chevy Celebrity Eurosport with like 70K on it. In 2002 he gave me the car when he went out and bought himself a newer car. It was 14 years old when it was given to me with 194,000 on it. Almost nothing worked in the car however I learned to respect what I had and fixed it up overtime. We have had the car since 1996 and currently today 2009 I am still driving it for the winter with 242K on the clock and mostly everything is original on the car.. It just keeps going.

In December of 2006 I went out and bought my 2000 Buick regal GSE with 129K for $3,500. I originally was trying to find a newer car to drive so I could fix up the Eurosport. However after getting behind the wheel of a newer car I just never could look back. I daily drove the car till June of 2008 when I got a new paint job and decided that I was going to put it away for the winter months. So now I am DD the Eurosport again.

WELL. My parents are poor as hell, so when I got my license, my BFF Jack (the4g63) offered me the Mazda (cause by then he had the Evo) to use until I could get something of my own.. and then my awesome Uncle came along and said "You're gonna be driving this?" Then a month later when I was down the shore visiting him, he pulls me aside on the balcony one morning and says..

Uncle T: "I'm really sorry I didn't send you a present for graduation.."
Me: "OMG Don't worry about it! I don't care about that stuff!"
Uncle T: "Yeah, well, the reason I didn't send you a card is because....... I'm buying you a car."
Me: "LOLWUT."

Alright so I didn't actually say LOLWUT, it was more like me hugging him to death but yeah. My uncle's the best. THE BEST.

My first car was am 88 Integra that was barely held together, that my dad surprised me with when I got myself a job that required me to drive an hour every day, during the summer of my last year in high school. We picked it up for $500 and 232K on the clock. I drove it until it had 283K on it and the origional engine gave up the ghost. I put two other engines into it and it jsut wasn't the same, so I scrapped her. My second, and current car, my dad fronted half the cash for and I payed him back, and then the other Talon, I took out a loan to build credit with, so, all the options apply to me.

Well My first car was a 1986 Oldsmobile Calais that I inherited from my brother, I worked my butt off and bought my 1992 Oldsmobile Achieva, then I got a real job and bought my Integra, that was hit in Oklahoma by a Drunk driver (luckily it was at a gas pump i wasn't in the car) and i bought the GTI. Finally when I bought my house, I needed a family car so I financed the RAV 4. I also financed A GSX for someone, and paid cash for a Jetta, and a Jeep Cherokee.

Well how i got the SRT-4... Hm i usually dont like talking about this story but ill put it on the table.

At first i had a 1995 Ford ranger ext cab 4x4 with the big dog V6, it had 19k on the ODO when i got it in 2005 because my grandfather bought it brand new and barely drove it. It was my grad present since day one and when i had the truck i loved it. Hell it even came to TST meets at Red Robin in feasterville when we used to meet there.

After this i kinda ran the truck into the ground and picked up a 1996 Ford Explorer also with the big V6 and 4x4...it was fun when i had it didnt do much to it other than a super dumb loud system and a intake but it did its purpose when rolling up to a place squad deep.

Then i traded that to a member on here for his 1990 GSX with mods already. This was a favorite car of mine fun to drive even more after the open dp shooting fireballs under the car, needless to say it had 253k on it and it was a DSM so at the time i got laid off and didnt have the cash to fix it. Also had some legal trouble and sold it to pay my lawyer.

So i took a ride to the dealership with my mom (she had the SRT since brand new in 04) we went to go look at a 2006 cobalt ss/sc in black. ill toss some photogs in this bia bia
pic i took of the ss. and my car riding like a tree hut on 4x4 status with some hidious chrome wheels.
http://b8.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/01218/86/37/1218197368_l.jpg

Needless to say i took over the 10k left on the payment and she ended up with a new balt ss. It worked out for me because i couldnt afford the payments on the SRT i looked at they wanted 600$ a month. Now im walking around with a 450$ payment hah

So my line ends here.

But my moms is longer then mine. She has had 16-17 cars in the last 8 years.
This replaced the SS. (intake, exhaust, chipped)

This replaced the charger.
http://c4.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/29/l_903b84585db667c272e3d55af429fa7f.jpg

then she got a impala...and now she has a 2008 jetta

Dad gave me my first car (92 Escort GT, which I still have) it was wrecked and he put it back together for me and gave it to me as a first car. Drove that for 3 1/2 years, and it ran like a champ. Went out and got a personal loan from a wealthy friend of the family to buy the Eclipse (which I've since paid back) White one got totalled, took the insurance check from that one to buy the purple POS.

Trans in the Escort blew up, in comes the truck, went out and got my own bank loan to buy that (in the process of paying back now). All my cars are titled in my parents name to keep the insurance down, I won't hide that. Hell I'd say %40-%50 of you guys do that too. It's a hell of a way to keep the "OMG you're a kid with 3 cars" Insurance cost down.

All my toys I pay for myself, YFZ, Mods for all 3 cars, etc... That's my story, and I have nothing of value to show at the end of my 6+ year run:roll:

ok, so I was lying to protect my manhood. :o

The real story is I bought my car brand new off the lot no cosigner and 2k down. I recently refinanced it through the rent's in a similar situation as Eclipse GSX 61. I was paying 7.5% interest, and now I'm down to 4% as it was the going rate of a CD at the time. It paid off for my parents as cd's went below 3% recently and works out for me at the same time. :)

Insurance is under my name and I pay for all of it.

my parents bought me cars through highschool... 1-1.5k cars, probably went through 4-5 of those... right after highschool i convinced my step dad to cosign for a 99 v6 mustang, i made all the payments, he put 2k down for it and paid insurance.

6 months later we traded it in for a 4 door blazer, which he paid for. he wanted a truck in the family, but didn't want to drive one... so i gave up the mustang.

he ended up taking the blazer and buying me an 88 celica, got it a tune up, he got into an accident, bought it back and fixed it, two weeks later i totaled it due to poor weather... after that, gave me another 2k to go buy whatever i wanted... in came the 86 laser turbo... drove that for a little bit... starter died, bought another starter, couldn't get it in due to rust. that sat for a year before the mechanic got to it... my uncle, in the mean time, bought me a corsica

I traded that in about a year later and handed over 1k cash as a down payment on the SRT-4, my mom cosigned.

So, i've gotten a lot of help in the beginning... but the SRT is all me. Family has helped me here and there two years ago with payments when i was broke... but insurance, payments are all on me now.

i want to trade it though... not 100% sure for what... i'd love another mustang

oh, and i paid for the truck in cash...

Hmm my older brother gave me a 5 spd 95 chevy cavalier for 300 bucks with 186,000 miles I rocked that for about a year learned how to drive stick. My g/f at the time had an uncle selling a 5 spd 96 VW GTI for 3500 but my g/f talked him into giving me it for 2500, my mom bought me that I drove that for probably 3-6 months and got into a head-on collision which was 50/50 not totally my fault, then we looked around for another VW and found a 96 VW jetta (WOW WAS THAT A MISTAKE!) I must have driven that for 3 + years and I ended up fixing soooooo much ****, it had to of been the most unreliable car ever! finally within the last year a friend of mine had a 45 year old neighbor selling a WRX so he could buy a 2003 Evo, so I took it out for a test drive and fell in love I knew a kid in highschool that always drove the exact same year WRX and I knew how much fun it was so I had 11,000 saved and paid the man cash and took the WRX which is my current car and I love it!

the other WRX the identical one I spoke of above ^ went through 2 different kids and ended up with my friend Corbin and he had been modding it out but him and that bug eye are gone now he's the one in my signature....R.I.P...Corbin Ryan Graver.

Out of high school(about 10 years ago) I drove my pop's Ford explorer it wasnt mine i just drove it since he had a company car...Then my parents bought me a 87 Ford Ranger 5spd so i could learn stick (cost $300)...after that i got the 240sx bug and i bought three different ones over the course of 3yrs a pignose (sold), a '92 with sr swap (totalled by an old lady at a traffic light), '91 coupe w/silvia front end swap (sold to a members brother inlaw).
I was kinda sick of buying cars that i had to drop money into just to bring them up to my standard. So I went out and financed a '01 Lexus IS300 put 2k down on it 9% interest, and i am crazy stupid happy. Whether someone does it on their own or mom and pop help/do it for them, as long as your grateful for what you have and respect those that help you then i see no problems.

1988 Buick Regal: given to me (twice now) by my uncle. It would have gone to the junkyard, so it's not worth anything.
1992 Mitsu Eclipse: I bought it, then sold it.
1997 Grand Marquis: Awesome graduation gift from my dad since he got a new car a few months earlier. It's still not in my name, but I have the title. I didn't have to make payments, which was really great, but I do pay my own insurance. I probably still, even after all the mods, couldn't get more than $3,000 for it.

i bought my first car (92 Sentra) for $600. drove the hell out of that until i could afford to buy something else. i bought my '87 4000S for $500. i still have that car. i bought my Integra as a shell and i've been working on building that for a while now. it has taken me a pretty long time. i've been tempted to go out and get a crappy high interest loan so i can finally finish it, but it's not worth it.

the best part about my integra is that when it's done, i won't owe anyone a penny. it's been built with cash.

My first Civic was a gift from my parents. Granted, they only paid $500 for it with a blown engine and my dad fixed it. I did the engine build and all of that stuff in that car, then it got totalled by some idiot who blew a stop sign. I bought the car back and got 5K from it, found my hatch for $300, and put a good majority of the money into it plus all the parts I already had into it. Then I got clobbered by a deer and I spent the rest of it + savings to fix it, lol.

The Camaro I got a personal loan for 5K and put up another $600 for. When I sold the Camaro I just flipped the cash I made from selling that and bought my trailer with it. I am still paying the loan with 12% interest. (which actually is the lowest possible rate because I have awesome credit... sigh).

CRX I bought the shell and dropped the stock engine from the Civic into it and beat it around daily.

i went and got a loan with 24% interest and bought my baby :)

Hahahahhahahhhahahahahahaha

seriously?

edit: Just so this isn't totally pointless. I paid for my car with my own money in cash (not that its saying much, wasnt a pricey car) and I paid for all the parts in cash myself as well which I know are worth a good 5-6x the amount i spent on the car already. Buying stuff with money you don't have is wayyy too risky unless you're the very smart and rich type who realizes they make more money through interest when their money sits in the bank than they lose by paying extra for financing or getting a loan so they choose to not pay in full in cash.

i paid for all of my own vehicles by myself, except my 2nd truck which my dad helped me out with. i was driving an 82 s10 i bought for 500 bucks at the time. it was rusting apart under my feet, and spewing fumes into the cab  so he convinced me that if we donate it, he will help me buy a better truck. we ended up getting me an 87 mazda b2000 which was pretty gay, but a huge step up from the s10. then after that i got into my 1st s13 for $600 (salvage title) and since then its been nothing but nissans. s z and d chassis :)

oh and ive always paid my own insurance gas maintenance tickets... thank god my insurance is finally dropping down to around 150/month for 2 cars. used to be more like 240 something.

After that, I paid cash for my 91 laser, then took out a loan to build some credit for my 94tsi. Then picked up my 92 and $500 in trade for my 94.

O, and somewhere in there I bought a Chevy Celebrity cause I needed a car quick, sold it a few months later.

Umm, its easy. It's called being part of the real world, where things are not handed to you. This crazy notion of earning something or paying something off. At the end you actually have a sense of accomplishment. I know, it's a silly idea. But it seems to work for the majority of us.

As for you fiance, if you can afford it, awesome. But if he is shelling out 1300 a month in payments and making 30k and living at home. . there is an issue. I hope that's not that case.

Well that is what I was basically trying to find out. I didn't think I have to treat people like idiots and spell it out for them. If they say that THEY paid for it, but it was from money given to them. . THEY didn't pay for it. I'm not trying to knock you, just agreeing. And if people did that, they need a reality check. um... to the point... you're not learning to be financially intelligent by being given nearly 23k in cash by your parents to buy the car. Nor are you building credit by doing so, which is even worse...

I cannot stand it when people let their parents buy them cars and then they treat the car like it's a $300 beater, even if it cost a decent bit of money. I have never had a car bought for me, or had help. My first car was a 1994 Saturn SL1. At 15, I bought it for 1G and it sat on my street until I got it road-worthy and had a license, and never once asked for my parents help. I'm not against parents buying their kids cars, but I would encourage them to help back their kids before handing over 10Gs and say, "Go find a car."

I couldnt let the car go, so I bought it from him. Though the car doesnt hold a lot of value in the market, it has a lot of value to me. Good memories and I love the car.

I know the feeling. My first car was a 2006 Sentra Spec-V. It might not have been much to some people, but to me it was my first "sporty" car. I sold it for the WRX, and rumor has it that it has become a home to some rats in a scrap yard. I am afraid to run a VIN check to see if it's true.
