View Full Version : So has anybody actually looked at the specs on the 09 Genesis?!

Just out of curiosity I hopped on Hyundai's website to check this thing out. (even though its only the sedan version right now) They have a 3.8L DOHC V6 that makes 290hp. (not too bad right?) They also have an available 4.6 DOHC V8...that makes 375hp! JEEZ ALMIGHTY! That thing must haul ass for bein a big 4 door....I'm amazed. Oh and they have CVVT. (continuously variable valve timing)

They said the Genesis was either the same in a straight line as a Boxster...that's pretty slow.

03 Boxsters run 13.8 according to C&D

13.8 for a Sedan made by Hyundai is pretty "fast" IMO

A Boxster does the quarter MAYBE 3/10 slower than a V8 Audi S4 (with those numbers^^ it's identical), which you claimed to be fast in another thread. Just saying, haha

The Genesis is spec'd well for the price... 290 hp V8, 6 speed auto, $32k. Doesn't look offensive but I really wouldn't call it good looking. All in all not a bad car for the money, spec-wise at least. I have no idea what they're like to drive.
I'm curious to drive the Genesis coupe, should be fun.

People said the same thing about Honda for years.
That said, I don't love Hyundai's either, but the Genesis Coupe might change that. might.

rhys millen (sp?) has a built genesis coupe drift car, is that the same one? It looks pretty nasty. They need to put the 375hp V8 into the coupe...holy crap that would be nasty.

no, 290hp V6, 375hp V8.

typo, oops

What does everyone think of the styling? I just think it's boring, like a more vanilla version of the big Lexus. Lines down the side are plain/straight, headlights are boring, grill is the only unique thing and it's ugly. The wheels also kind of suck. I wouldnt mind driving one soon though

I thought they look pretty lame ass. But a few weeks ago, I stopped by a Hyundai dealer, and the car looks a lot better in person than on a picture, imo.

=Oh and they have CVVT. (continuously variable valve timing)

Same with mitsu and their mivan or whatever, toyota and their vvt, etc. etc. It's not really a major power thing like the almighty v-tak...just keeps the mileage a lil better while your gunning it.

Rhys gencoupe hasn't been confirmed as a drifter YET.... ;) But it is ganna be their racer and they are already starting to generate a buzz with how well its going to do.

do they make these with a manual trans?

The gen sedan, no. The coupe gets the option of a 6 speed ZF manual tranny or 5 or 6 speed automatic, depending on engine choice.

I thought they look pretty lame ass. But a few weeks ago, I stopped by a Hyundai dealer, and the car looks a lot better in person than on a picture, imo.

They do look a lot better in person, but the coupe is ganna be the star for a long while to come.

Oh, and for anyone curious, here's the coupes engine choices:
* 3.8 V6
o 310 hp (Premium Fuel)
o 263 lb. ft. @ 4,700 rpm (regular and premium fuel)
o 0-60 mph in less than 6 seconds
o Top speed of 149 mph (240 km/h)
* 2.0T
o 223 hp (Premium Fuel)
o 217 lb. ft. @ 2,500 rpm (regular and premium fuel)
o 0-60 mph in mid 7 seconds
o Top speed of 137 mph (220 km/h)

EDIT: Oh yea, and you get the choice of a sport package. Full Brembo brakes, and Torsen-type LSD.

Couple all that with the 10 year/100k mile warrenty? **** yea!

I've been following the genesis coupe a lot. If the rumors are true that I4-T models are starting in the low $20s, then this car is gonna sell like hot cakes.

As for the sedan, I like. Hyundai is definitely making the right changes

The commercials for the gencoupe will air during the superbowl, just as the gensedan did.

just remember... KIA has taken Hyundai's place as the piece of **** "need a car!!!!" company. Hyundai's quality has gone up... and yeah, they may not have had the money to put into design, but they're using common designs that appeal to people that can't afford the expensive stuff. "well, it looks like a lexus kinda, and has power" is a good thing.

gotta leave innovation in design to the companies that can afford it. Hyundai sells cars, plain and simple... and this genesis vehicle is a huge step for them as a company

I saw the Genesis sedan at last years auto show and it definetely looks pretty damn good in person, the interior was damn nice too.

http://image.motortrend.com/f/9634010/112_0808_13z+2009_hyundai_genesis+interior.jpg

As far as the coupe, rwd, evo 10 turbo engine, brembo's and lsd for under 25k, umm yes please. Decent interior too:

http://thecarsblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/hyundai-genesis-coupe-se2.jpg

In todays market and for that money theres really no competition, everything else is fwd or awd. Plus the evo 10 engine seems to be way more potent than the 4g63, I dont know about big power but apparently flashed evo x's dyno what 9's did with a bunch of bolt ons.

Unless Hyundai cheaps out on the trans or the rear end or something, this thing should sell like hot cakes and have loads of bang for buck performance.

i really wouldn't call it "the evo x motor" after all... it is the "world engine" or whatever they're calling it... the srt-4 caliber has it as well... in fact, i think the srt came out before the evo x... so that would make it "the srt-4 motor"...

however... to be more specific, i believe they share only the block... which begs to question... is hyundai putting together the turbo system for their coupe? or are they using either dodge's or mitsubishi's turbo set up?

the caliber srt does not use a 4b11
The Mitsubishi 4B1 engine is a range of all-alloy straight-4 engines built at Mitsubishi's Japanese "World Engine" powertrain plant in Shiga on the basis of the Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance (GEMA).[1][2][3] Although the basic designs of the various engines are the same, their exact specifications are individually tailored for each partner. The cylinder block and other basic structural parts of the engine were jointly developed by the GEMA companies, but the intake and exhaust manifolds, the cylinder head’s intake and exhaust ports, and other elements related to engine tuning were independently developed by Mitsubishi.[1]

All engines developed within this family have aluminium cylinder block and head, four valves per cylinder, double overhead camshaft layouts, and MIVEC continuous variable valve timing. The 4B1 engine family is the first to have the continuously variable valve timing MIVEC system applied not only to its intake valves but also to its exhaust valves. The intake and exhaust cam timing is continuously independently controlled and provide four optimized engine operating modes.[1][4]

Also remember that KIA is owned by Hyundai now. They were aiming for something of the sort of Toyota/Lexus, Nissan/Infinity.

But yes, the gencoupe will be using the "same engine" as the EvoX. They all share the same block I believe it is, but everything else is ganna be tuned/designed by the individual companies.

They said the Genesis was either the same in a straight line as a Boxster...that's pretty slow.

Alex, Can u plz share with us what ur definition of a "fast" car is. B/c ive driven an 08 Boxter, and it hauled a good bit of ass. Not as fast as the sti, but fast nonetheless. And btw, i wouldnt personally say ur car is "slow". Its a roadster, not a dragster. ur on 9psi probly making high 100s at the wheels. In a car that light, thats a decent amount of power. And Rich said she pulled pretty hard, and thats coming from a guy who has a modded VR4. Hence we are back to the reason why i asked u my original question. :)

As for the Genesis, well, its the only korean car i like, and I hope it is a precursor of good things to come.

I think people are viewing this a bit the wrong way, Hyundai isn't trying to match the "better brands" even though some of those "better brands" have been experiencing some drops in quality and reliability. Hyundai is trying to create an alternative for those who can't afford it, but still get a great car for the money. They are becoming great cars for the money, if you are going to complain about a 30k car that has more room, power, amenities, options, standard features and a MUCH longer warranty than the smaller cars that Mercedes, BMW, Audi and Volvo charge 40-120k for then you need something better to complain about. Such as the ridiculous prices of a base Mercedes E-class hovering around the 50k mark and Hyundai has a 5-6 year LONGER warranty and more space, power and options.

I'll take my extra 20k.

That was the original intention back when it was a concept car. However they ran into issues shoe-horning it into the chassis and opted for a smaller engine. :( C'mon if someone can put a small-block V8 in a Miata and a Supra engine in an S2k they could have made it work!

That car looks good... the lines down the side are still weird but if it drives as well as it's spec'd, I'd certainly rock it. Definitely going to try and drive one as soon as possible
