New rules are out.

The most note worthy in my opinion.

Ban on tire warmers
Three race engines. 4 for testing and 8 per season. 20 per team
No internal retuning.
Possible reduction in race distance.

Aparently these changes are going to reduce racing costs exponentially. I just wish I knew the specs on the new engines. I know they rev to 18 grand.

Oh yeah and these engines will remain unchanged till 2012.

Since I don't follow Formula 1, are these changes good, bad, neither?

^ Or I should ask, what's your opinion on them?

Yeah, I was wondering if someone would post about this. Rev to 18k instead of 19k, less wind tunnel use, basically it's going to theoretically take less resources to run a team, keeping costs down.

Small write-up here... http://www.topgear.com/us/blog/more/new-breed/
And from the FIA... http://www.fia.com/en-GB/mediacentre/pressreleases/wmsc/wmsc08/Pages/wmsc_121208.aspx

All I know is that the new cars are UGLY. (http://www.topgear.com/us/blog/more/2009-f1-starts-here/) But if the racing is close and that we have a race or two in 2009 as entertaining as Brazil was in this year I don't care. Only three months 'till Australia!

It looks like everything is aimed at cheaper cost. They estimate up to 50% reduction.

Some changes are questionable like the ban on tire warmers. I dont get that. Also the 3 race engine is going to be very wierd unless they balance performance with longevity.

Im happy about the slicks. The wing changes...dunno. I like that they are looking into making the distance shorter, but I wish there was a larger field. I think alot of races will end with 4-6 DNF's.

There did seem to be an enormouse ammount of waste in F1, and this seems aimed at reeling that in.

I cant find the specs on the engines. Are they still 2.8?

Hah, might be! But look at that little chode wing! So goofy. I always tell myself not to care about aesthetics but it's part of the fun when watching F1.

I'm also intrigued by the shorter races, could make things more interesting. The ban on tire warmers is weird and I don't understand the logic behind it, but who knows. I think they're still gonna be 2.4l, no mention in the press release.

If its the same engine size as before they're all 2.4l v8

I saw mention of a Cosworth V10. Not official though. If it is a V10 then I can accept the 18,000 rpm.

lol - you'd accept anything as long as they told you it while they wore lingere(sp?)

They are banning in-season testing as well. Not sure if that was mentioned. The KERS systems seem like they won't be ready for Australia, so I am curious what will happen with that.

these changes and the changes made last year for this past season IMO are pretty awesome makes for better racing every change has put more control in the drivers hands as well as test there abilities behind the wheel. Maybe Super Aguri-Honda will be able to win more then a few sporadic races :(

If its anything like this past season you won't be dissappointed. I need to stop slacking on MotoGP. I missed a good season. Caught like 4 races. But F1 is the G.O.A.T.

Is there a televised schedule anywhere?

I think Speed already replayed all MotoGP races once already. They should start airing DTM and V8 super cars which can hold me over until March.

Edit: Misread your question, you can get the schedule on wikipedia but timezones need to be adjusted and Speed may not air them live.

honda pulled out of formula1 all together though, so i dont think anyone is going to be allowed to run the old technology. i still think its unbelievable that theyre running 2.4L v8's with 700ish hp

How old are those pics of the cylinder heads? I know everyone uses plunged cut heads now. I saw a few pics of cosworth's V8 indy car heads. They're ****ing unbeleivable.

And fogger fuel injectors are insane. Anyone ever seen the dyno vid of the F1 ferrari motor? Nuckin Futs!!!

hmm the ban on the tire warmers seems like it isnt going to work like the FIA would like it to, because the teams will find out another way to heat them up and spend the money there...and i think there was talk about them running on slicks also

crazy that you dont find valve springs in these engines... the valve is pneumatically returned :)

fun right?

I hope they air DTM and V8 Supercars like years past instead of every half hour being clogged up with Pinks, Wrecked or Unique Whips...

Speed has really turned into a not very interesting channell... Used to be they had lots of real racing... Now its all Reality sows and nascar...

SCCA Runoffs airs every wednesday night...

I wish F1 would return to Watkins Glen. I got to see many races there as a kid. My Cousins live a 1/2 mile from the track. Also great to have the Senna name in F1 again. Ayrton was the Greatest driver ever in my opinion!

yea i dont watch much speed anymore. even if they show DTM or V8 supercars its like cut down and edited!! WTF??? but i will get a marathon of wrecked?? or god help me Pinks!! I started watching DiscorveryHD, they seem to have more motorsport themed shows on, like back when it was speedvision!!!

That is what so many have been pleading for so long. Even at the SPEED Channel website forums... which you might think would be a place for SPEED to listen to advice given by their viewers. But no. We ask for more real racing and we get "Wrecked"... I would love to see Motorsport Mundial return, even though it was only 30 minutes.
Anyway, more on topic:
I was hoping to see Prodrive get into F1 this season, but that's now a lost cause. On the other hand, Honda is "interviewing" 12 potential buyers for their spots on the grid, after reportedly narrowing the buyers down from 30. I don't think Bruno Senna has to worry about securing a seat for this season.

So... new helmet cam video from Ferrari:
