So i'm planning on driving to syracuse, NY to buy a car this weekend. I'm trying to plan ahead and make sure things go smoothly, so i don't waste 4 hours driving to Syracuse and come back without my car. Planning on doing all this on sunday, so i hope nothing that we need is close (not sure what we really need. a notary?). The guy does have a clean title in his hands. It currently doesn't have any plates on it, so we're going to have to trailer is back. I tried educating myself on both the PA and NY dmv website, but didn't really get too far. So is there anything I need to know/get, so i won't have any trouble registering the car in PA? Thanks.

I have. I bought my S13 in Charlotte, NC. But I just drove it back the whole 10 hours with no plates because I'm just that tough.

But to be honest, as long as you get the NY title signed over to you, you can register it in PA just fine.

All PA will do is send it to Harrisburg to have to title swapped over to a PA title and you'll receive it in the mail. You'll still be able to register/insure it just fine.

My car is from florida. I drove it for 4 weeks with the FL plate on it. Becasue I'm an idiot.

Guy signed over FL title to me...I bring it to DMV...they give me temp title...get PA title in mail in a month.

And you also have to get the car inspected. I'v also yet to do that. Ridin Dirty

Well if i were you i would go to a tags place in NY and transfer the title, just so you know there is no problems with the title/cars registration. What they will do is charge you (in pa its $45) 38$ for a temp tag, and its a cardboard license plate thats valid for 30 days. When you get back to pa you have 30 days to go to a tags/title place and transfer the tags to pa and transfer the title to pa.

NY is cool because they don't make you notorize the title he can just sign it over to you. You have to bring the car to the DMV when you register so they can verify the car and vin etc. But other than that it's straightforward

i wouldnt trust someones word. The title can be a fake, can be for a different car etc. People scam people all the time... im just sayin if it was ME doing this deal, i would go to the DMV in NY to sign the title over and get temp tags to drive back to PA.

are they just called tags place? is there a more formal name? thanks. i want to try to find one in syracuse. you make a good point about not getting scammed.

I dont think NY titles have to be notorized to be signed over. No need to go to a notary. I know the FL title from my car didnt have to be notorized.

It's pretty hard to fake a title. Just make sure the zin on the firewall matches the title.

Yeah, you have to pay taxes on the car in whatever car you're registering it in.

Bill of sale. The seller has to write you a bill of sale which you need to present to the DMV. You pay whatever your state sales tax is on the amount the bill of sale says you paid.

true, and if you can, try to get the guy you bought it from say you bought for a lot less than you did for lower taxes.

You can go to a local tag place there and get a temporary transit tag, might be cheaper than towing it. The tags issued in PA are good for 90 days and I think cost $90, may be diff rates in NY.

because its out of state you have to have his signature notorized then you take the title back with you and then take it to your local notary. make sure they are open on sundays, because they arent around me... i buy/sell to many cars, so ive been thru this quite a few times...

if you wanna make sure def call a notary in that area your picking the car up from and verify...

I think someone above already mentioned, but if not, make sure the vin on the chassis matches the vin on the title.

last two questions, are you sure that NY doesn't require a notary to sign over the title? and can anyone explain further what this bill of sale is? is there a template we have to fill out? couldn't find anything on the NY dmv website. from what i gathered, we just make up this bill of sale ourselves??

NY does not require a notary. I would know, I live here. I can't speak for PA.

Bill of sale as follows...

I, Mike Goetz sell (whatever your name is) my 1998 Honda Accord (or whatever the hell it is) "as is" in the amount of $xxxx on December 17th, 2008. Then you both sign and date it.

thanks man. Since i'm buying the car in NY and bringing it back to PA, it makes sense that i would abide by NY laws then (which doesn't require a notary). It would make no sense for the seller to drive down to PA because it needs to be notarized.

Does the seller need a copy of the Bill of Sale too?

He can make a copy of it if he wants one for his own records, but you're the one whom needs one.

^ And like what was already mentioned, see if he's cool with writing you out a bill for less than you're actually paying to lower the amount of taxes you're going to have to pay. I have never once paid taxes on a car that I was supposed to.

if you really wanted, you could bring a PA plate with you for the drive back...just dont drive like an a-hole or give a cop any reason to run your tags

Didn't you say you're picking the car up in Syracuse? You're going to drive right through Binghamton on route 81. Syracuse is an hour north of where I live (Binghamton).

yeah. it's in syracuse. i'm coming from harrisburg, pa so i will be driving straight up 81.

if the car gets stolen the insurance isn't going to base it off of how much i bought it for, right? i sure hope not. it would make sense to go by the current value of the car.

No. Assuming you have comprehensive coverage it will be based off of the blue book value.

I got my M from a dealer in TX - it was trailered to NJ where I picked it up. Had no problems.

Good bump! What's the verdict? Did everything go smoothly?
